Well done the curlers

The men have a medal too. Just don't know what colour yet.

FrankelInFoal · 20/02/2014 11:42

Big congratulations to them all, though there will be a men's medal tomorrow too.

KittyVonCatsington · 20/02/2014 11:43

Wonderful news! Never seen such a perfect finish Smile

Just want to point out that the men's GB Curling team are in the final so they will definitely get a Silver or Gold too.

WooWooOwl · 20/02/2014 11:43

Why?

Is a medal for team GB worth more when it's won by a woman rather than a man or something?

KittyVonCatsington · 20/02/2014 11:44

X-posts!!! Sorry Grin

DreamingofSummer · 20/02/2014 11:45

woo because women's sport never gets the coverage it deserves so from time to time it's good to be able to bask in female glory

YANBU
And I was delighted to hear the Women's Cricket team have received funding after their ashes win.

I have a sporty DD2 and the lack of airtime given to women's sport really annoys her.

vj32 · 20/02/2014 11:53

But the winter Olympics is a joke. I love sport, we watch loads of different sport in our house. But most of the events are completely unintelligible with no sensible scoring system. Some of the events can be won by going slowly and just not falling over as there is a fairly good chance everyone else will(anyone watching the Ski Cross??).

Other than curling, bobsleigh and figure skating and the downhill skiing events, the events are mostly quite ridiculous. Funny to watch and certainly requiring skill... but not really sports.

vj32 · 20/02/2014 11:56

Sorry, my point was I don't think it will help improve coverage of women in sport at all because the coverage has been so poor and so many events are so silly.

Women's figure skating competition is going to be amazing and much better than the men's for once but I guess that's a bit girly for some people?

VodkaJelly · 20/02/2014 11:57

On my local news they mentioned that Jenny Jones had won the first medal for snowboarding then did a massive article on a bloke who was doing snowboarding but was trailing something like 12th. They had an interview with him and a massive article but only a little mention for Jenny who had won an actual medal. Unbelievable

Sallyingforth · 20/02/2014 12:00

OP - So?

YANBU OP.

ReadyToPopAndFresh · 20/02/2014 12:07

And can I point out (as an American) that when people say American's are shit at football.

That our women's team is number one in the world according to FIFA. So only the men are shit really

Is a medal for team GB worth more when it's won by a woman rather than a man or something?

The news headline yesterday was 'curlers in to final' and a film of the men, totally ignoring the medals won by women.

If you are happy with that, and the women winning the ashes not being covered either I think you need to ask why you are OK with women's achievements, in 2014 being ignored.

Deliaskis · 20/02/2014 12:27

YANBU OP.

YABU vj32 the winter olympics are not silly or a joke! Many of the athletes (especially in the UK with virtually zero funding) dedicate their lives for these sports, most of which are tough, require strength, stamina, speed etc. and as much dedication as more mainstream sports.

I love winter games, can you tell!

D

ReadyToPopAndFresh · 20/02/2014 12:31

Exactly Sash, the medals aren't worth more but they are reported as though they are worth less

ReadyToPopAndFresh · 20/02/2014 12:34

Remember How Murry was the first British winner of Wimbeldon since 1936?

Except he wasn't?

NinjaCow · 20/02/2014 13:12

I thought the reason to men curling got more attention was that they could have a gold or silver, whereas women got the bronze. So it makes sense for them to be shown more. Or have I got it wrong?

ReadyToPopAndFresh · 20/02/2014 13:28

Or wait till they actually have a medal and give the women time on tv now because they have already won? Or will the women ever get a chance?

vj32 · 20/02/2014 13:41

Deliaskis I don't think they are a joke as such, just a bit ridiculous. Even the commentators for the Jenny Jones medal event had no clue who had performed better than anyone else or what the judges were going to give, and at least one of them competes in that event. If the judges seem to be choosing who they like best on the basis of 'style', well that's not really a sport.

If the rules are pretty much made up as they go along, I don't think its credible as a sport, however much training or effort it requires.

Women's sport should be more on TV - Yes. Especially relatively successful and accessible sports like cricket, rugby, netball, basketball. I'm not bothered if elitist and apparently made up 'sports' like skicross don't get loads of coverage.

Waltonswatcher1 · 20/02/2014 13:45

Of course it's a big deal because its women .
If anyone thinks this is a non issue they are misguided . Look at how many women are in the line up for Sports Personality of the Year ...it always drives my sporty daughter nuts .
I bet you that at every school sports day the last even is always a male one . I bet you the male medals are handed out last .
It stinks that in education we are still teaching the girls that the boys sporting achievements are more applaudable .

AICM · 20/02/2014 13:48

AIBU to point out that at the London games nearly twice as many men won gold for GB as did women?

Just saying for the sake of balance. I don't really think it matters but I'm sure the OP will be along to tell us all soon. These things are important to her.

Kveta · 20/02/2014 13:53

and yet the bloody commentators keep on talking about 'the girls' and 'the men' for some reason. patronising gits.
