FFS. Given that men literally rule the world they don't actually need to be defended or mentioned for "balance".

YANBU!

VJ - you are talking nonsense.

Some people on this thread are being so disingenuous. Women's achievements in sport are incredibly underreported, this is so obvious it's uncontested. So, it is important to highlight how well the women have done. We don't need to make a special mention for the men because the media did that for us all the time!

Report
SwayingBranches · 20/02/2014 13:58

Men are the default everything which is why it appears invisible. Visibility for half the population of the entire world isn't too much to ask which is why we celebrate any achievement by women that is actually mentioned.

AICM

So we shouldn't celebrate women's success when we get the chance?

although it is many years since I skied and I won't again, I am really enjoying the winter olympics. Far better than the ultra-dull running about and throwing things of the summer games. There are interesting sports there but none of them work as spectator sport, whereas the winter games do.

except the shriek and sweep of curling (why does women's sport always involve squeals? Worse than the tennis!) and the incomprehensible ice hockey, that is.

Why can't we just celebrate success? I was very much aware of all 3 medals and I haven't been following the games at all. It's been on TV a lot and in all the papers. So I really don't accept the argument that these medals were under-reported.

But we've got 4 medals! Confused

AIMC

They may have won twice as many medals but I bet they got more than twice as much coverage.

"Women's achievements in sport are incredibly underreported, this is so obvious it's uncontested."

Well I'll contest it. It depends what you mean by "underreported". I would say that what is reported is a reflection of the level of interest shown in that activity. What you are really complaining about is that people are simply not that interested in women's achievements, rather than the reporting of it. But equally, there are lots of sports full stop that don't get that much coverage. I doubt many people are aware that England has 4 men and 3 women ranked in the top 10 in squash. I'd like more coverage of squash because it is something that interests me, but clearly the interest isn't there or it would be reported on more.

I don't believe there is some grand conspiracy to put women's sport down. The opposite in fact. I'm sure the likes of Sky Sports would love it if they had loads more people watching the women's ashes coverage as it would generate them more revenue. Businesses are there to make money and if they could do so out of women's sport they would be.

In terms of the winter olympic coverage, there has been easily as much for the women as the men. If not more. There have been more British women in with a chance and winning medals, and it certainly doesn't feel like that's been underreported.

"But we've got 4 medals!"

Confused Gold in Skeleton, bronze in snowboard slopestlye, and bronze in curling. what is the fourth?

SauvignonBlanche · 20/02/2014 14:40

The men's curling, it's a gold or silver. We find out which tomorrow.

ElaClaw · 20/02/2014 14:44

Ahh, pedantically I can't count that yet ;)

Very pedantic, but technically correct, I suppose.
The men could all catch Ebola virus and die overnight, I'll give you that. Grin
I very much hope they don't!

Murray and 70 whatever years since a Brit won Wimbledon makes my fur bristle and my ears twitch Angry

I remember Virginia Wade winning very clearly, my DM was hiding in the kitchen - she swore she always lost if she watched her!

(Jamie Murray's winning the mixed didn't mentioned either)

Will you be 'boohing' if men's sports gain more medals than women's?

I'll be celebrating any medals GB gets.

36% of medals in 2012 games won by GB team were won by women. My source was the Guardian.

I don't see the point of splitting genders ir celebrating females winning more than males, seems petty and trivialises the effort they put in.

Personally I prefer the winter Olympics to the summer one, ice hockey, curling and most of the slope events are fantastic.

I've been watching the footage here in Australia and have to say I've found it pretty balanced between the male and female sports. I do get a bit annoyed at the "hopes of the nation riding on their shoulder" commentary though. I did laugh a bit when our snowboarders who had been massively promoted (and supported financially) bombed out and the aerial skier who received no publicity and did it all on his own managed to win a silver. Very pleased for him.

It's not about trivialising men's achievements but celebrating womens!

vj32 - just because you don't understand the rules, doesn't mean they're "making them up as they go along". I'm not quite sure which events you're talking about?

OP - YANBU I think this has, on the whole, been a superb games for women athletes - especially with the inclusion of ski jumping for women for the first time.
