To think that P&C spaces in supermarket car parks

AIBU to think that where there is a pedestrian pavement down the middle of a supermarket car park, it would make far more sense to have the parent and child parking in a well lit area further away from the entrance. This would mean that the spaces would not get clogged up by drivers without children too lazy to find a space, and in some car parks could be in an area with less traffic.

When did I say people couldn't use examples from their lives?

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 17:37

gordy what if you were putting your DC in the car and a sudden gust of wind took it and dinged the car door of the person next to you? It can happen, and that's why extra wide spaces are really useful. Even if you park with no one else around, you can't stop someone coming and parking right next to you.

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:37

in response to my post And here it is, there's always one I managed to do it with 12 newborns, a 2 seater car, one leg and an eyepatch, and we didn't have arms or trolleys in those days

seems very rude and dismissive of my point Hmm

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:38

Ziggie if it was windy/is windy I hold the door. chuck them in, climb in and close the door after me THEN do the cars seats up

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 17:38

And your listing off seemed very dismissive of very genuine concerns that Georgie had about damaging other people's cars.

Good that you felt comfortable, if she doesn't then that's fine!

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:38

And also Gordy, wanting to treat others cars with respect is part of wanting P&C spaces.

But if its a choice between respecting your car, or getting my children in? My children are going to win every time because people should be aware of how they park. If they absolutely box you in so they have more space to get out on the other side? They bloody deserve it.

IamInvisible · 20/02/2014 17:39

Yes Curious they can get themselves in the car now! but they haven't always been 19&17! When they were toddlers we had estate cars, we managed. We've had MPVs, we managed. Now they are 6'3 and 6'4 we still bloody manage!

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 17:39

It's very hard to put a baby in a car seat (taking two hands) and hold the car door isn't it?

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:40

Iaminvisible, height doesn't have a whole lot to do with it, tbh.

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:41

And if you have a carseat, you need a certain amount of room to lean over and strap it in...

I have a base but not everyone does, and that requires quite a lot of room.

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:41

I seriously do think if you can't manage to get into a car without causing damage to other peoples cars you must be doing something wrong

if someone dented your door would you shrug it off and think 'oh well they must have had children' or would you be a tiny bit cross

ziggiestardust · 20/02/2014 17:42

When I park I naturally look at the cars either side of me (if they are there) and notice if they have child seats in; they are big chunky things so can't really miss, and if they do I try to either give more room or park slightly further forward or back to offset the doors.

blahblahblah2014 · 20/02/2014 17:43

I park in the first space i find that is closest to the store entrance that is not a disabled bay. If this happens to be a p&c space then i take it. My DS is 13 although I am mostly by myself when i shop. There is no reason for p&c spaces, and no law protecting anyone from using them (unlike disabled bays). Just because you had a kid you are more entitled to park than anyone else spending money in the store? I think not!

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:43

Gordy, I don't park like an uncaring dick, so yeah, I'd be pissed off.

I park in the centre of the space, but not everyone does.

It must be nice to live in a perfect town full if perfect people with perfectly proportioned cars. Where is this fictional place??

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:44

no it isn't Ziggie - car seat down, door open, hold door with right hand, lift carseat into car with right, climb in - and sit next to the seat to do the strapping

it's probably going to be perceived as something to take further offence at but I managed to do that more than once

if you look for solutions rather than get cross about the problem it is easier

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:44

Blah blah blah came to play! Wink

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:44

left not right! unless you have 2 right hands

IamInvisible · 20/02/2014 17:44

I can squeeze out of my car despite being on crutches and needing a lot of room, if I have to Curious. I can do it without knocking the car next to me too!

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:45

Perhaps you're not as wide as a car seat?

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:46

you would be very unfortunate to have 2 people parked badly around you - but I am sure you would manage

I don't live in a perfect town but I try not to get bogged down with drama over parking - I just get on with it - it's parking and getting in and out of a car not quantum mechanics

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:47

Gordy - as you are the children/cars/parking wizard...

How would you get in to strap the seat in if there was a 2nd child seat next to you? Are you a size minus 4?

Sirzy · 20/02/2014 17:48

why do you need more room to fasten a car seat? I can manage to fasten one without needing any extra space at all whichi s pretty standard isn't it?

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:48

anyway I am off to the gym, where I will reverse park my huge 4x4 into a normal sized space in a tiny car park and manage not to damage anyones property

I like living in perfect town

gordyslovesheep · 20/02/2014 17:49

oh and there are 3 back seats in my car - one child left, one right - I manage by standing inbetween - I am a size 12 - hth x

curiousgeorgie · 20/02/2014 17:49

Presumably you don't take babies in car seats to the gym?

Have fun in your huge 4x4 Grin

(You really wanted people to notice that point right? Do you have a flat screen too?)
