To be concerned about national unrest in a post-referendum Scotland?

So I live in Scotland, I am Scottish., we know it's coming one way or another, but the main thing that worries me is what happens AFTERWARDS? This is going to be very close possibly I guess around 50/50. Either way this means that 50% of the country are going to be hugely unhappy with the result and this is absolutely bound to lead onto to trouble.

What plans are in place to make sure and ensure that we won't have to face some ugly demonstrations and some nasty situations? People feel very strongly about this either way and it can not be denied that strong feeling and politics don't mix well.

This is a serious question so I really don't want to be shot down please.

sorry we seem to be just chatting now Blush

Already talk about applying for permission for Independence Day street parties here.

I will probably not resort to violence in the event of a no majority. I'm not usually a violent Scot.

mrsjay · 19/02/2014 17:18

what if we dont get the yes vote wll they just have a party anyway,

Malcolm what sort of unrest do you think will happen ,

Juliaparker25 · 19/02/2014 17:21

BumPotato · 19/02/2014 17:21

If there's a weekend that week, there'll likely be a party, either way.

Ooooh gosh thanks for your replies! I had no idea there would be so many.

I guess having grown up seeing so much of a problem with sectarianism I'm rather concerned that any excuse for it to rear it's ugly head in some form or another and it'll be back full force! From little things like being told to "fuck off back to England" over the years because I don't speak with the local dialect (pretty unbelievable really, but this has happened to me several times!) it worries me there will be even more hostility in the event of a no vote. (I'm in a very much SNP stronghold and people are deeply hostile towards "outsiders" at times it's quite scary.)

OP posts:
mrsjay · 19/02/2014 18:04

tbh the fuck off back to england will always happen sadly it is the minority numpties that say it, I honestly dont think the SNP being in power has made that sort of thing any worse, and as for the outsider thing my dh is from another country my dad still thinks he is an outsider Confused small mindedness is small mindedness whether we get a yes or not,

mrsjay · 19/02/2014 18:05

county not country jings

mrsjay · 19/02/2014 18:05

uncle shug is my step brother so no blood relation is a bit of a jakey tbh

TeacupDrama · 19/02/2014 18:54

I'm English in Scotland never had a problem with being English apart from some banter re sport but as I genuinely could not care less about most sport it's no big deal I generally support England if they are playing Scotland but otherwise support Scotland most of GB curling team are scottish Andy Murray is Scottish but if he gets beaten shrug the shoulders it's sport not war

I do not think they will be any trouble after vote I do think turn out will be quite good 70%+ but I think no will win unless economy goes really pear shaped in next 6 months
the only sectarian thing is the rangers/celtic catholic/protestant but I do not think unlike Northern Ireland that Rangers means No and Celtic Yes

BumPotato · 19/02/2014 19:11

The Celtic/Rangers sectarianism thing only applies to viewers in Glasgow (that are not Jags) in any case.

BumPotato · 19/02/2014 19:12

Apologies, a MINORITY of viewers, I meant to say.

ComposHat · 19/02/2014 19:33

scottishmummy we also have sectarian parades and all the shite and aggro that goes with that. The domestic violence and arrest rate soars every time the sectarian pantomime of Celtic vs Rangers happens. With the exception of places like Southport, England doesn't have naked sectarianism on its streets, so we should think twice about trying to claim the moral high ground.
