About Weetabix portion size?

JammyTodger · 17/02/2014 10:23

DH thinks I am over-feeding 4yo DS by giving him 2 Weetabix for breakfast. He is a slim boy and always hungry. Surely 2 Weetabix isn't excessive?? How many do your 4 yo boys eat?

Mine have had two since much younger than 4 :)

FourArms · 17/02/2014 10:26

I'd say if he's always hungry make sure he has them with full fat milk and some protein / fat if you can to keep him full.

QuietlyWingingIt · 17/02/2014 10:27

My 2 year old DD will 2 weetabix and then ask for toast/fruit/bagel...she is tall and slight.

underachievingmum · 17/02/2014 10:27

My 3 and 5 year old have 2, and sometimes 3.

They get them one at a time and ask for another if still hungry!

WillYouDoTheFandango · 17/02/2014 10:32

My 1year old has 1.5 so it seems fine to me. A 4 yo doesn't need that many fewer calories than a small adult woman. Isn't it around 1200?

ilovepowerhoop · 17/02/2014 10:34

2 is considered the adult portion. My 2 never really liked them after they were babies so we never got past 1 biscuit.

pussycatdoll · 17/02/2014 10:34

Mine had 1 weetabix with a mashed banana every morning until he was 5
Now he has a massive bowl of cheerios ( age 9 )

FoxesRevenge · 17/02/2014 10:35

My niece was shovelling down adult portions at the age. We wondered where it all went as she is very slight. As long as the child isn't becoming overweight then I don't see what the problem is.

MrsDavidBowie · 17/02/2014 10:35

Ds 14 has 7 for breakfast plus other cereal. And often another 5-8 when he comes home from school/for supper.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/02/2014 10:35

my four year old ate 3 weetbakes! (imitation ones!)

MikeLitoris · 17/02/2014 10:37

My 3yo had 1.5 weetabix with warm milk then a peice of toast with Nutella and banana for breakfast. 2 is fine at that age.

Wait until he is 13 and wants 3 for breakfast, 2 for an after school snack and another 3 for supper at 8pm.

SlimJiminy · 17/02/2014 10:39

I'd have still been hungry after 2 weetabix when I was that age. Our parents had to stop buying it in the end because eventually her three kids were having 5 weetabix each every morning.

I could see his problem if you were feeding DS 2 mars bars for his breakfast, but nothing wrong with 2 weetabix!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 17/02/2014 10:40

My girls had 2 Weetabix at that age, it isn't too much. Mine eat huge amounts of cereal now but they they are both very slim and they burn it off during the morning.

RayPurchase · 17/02/2014 10:42

DS (4) always has 2 bowls of cereal - this morning he had a weetabix and a bowl of bran flakes. He's currently eating a banana and is asking for his lunch already Shock he is a bottomless pit.

PurplePidjin · 17/02/2014 10:42

my 15mo would easily eat 2 although i tend to offer a banana after the first so he gets a variety. i try to go with feed them when they're hungry, hopefully that'll lead to a healthy attitude to food later in life

JammyTodger · 17/02/2014 10:43

mrsdavidbowie Shock I thought my Dad was a greedy pig when he had 4.

fourarms good advice with the full-fat milk. I'll try that.

I think Mumsnet has spoken on this. I knew IWNBU Grin

mrsdavid Shock

Why on earth does your son need 15 weetabix a day? Just how is he not bunged up?

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/02/2014 10:44

My dd has just started having two at seven. :)

jammiedonut · 17/02/2014 10:45

Oh dear, two is an adult portion? I've been having at least four since I was around five years old!

MillyStar · 17/02/2014 10:47

My 22 month old dd has 1.5-2 wheetabix and toast afterwards

fancyanotherfez · 17/02/2014 10:49

My DS has 2 and then some yoghurt or toast and he is 2 1/2. I would rather he had a good breakfast than have less and then complain that he's hungry. He's then more likely to eat something that's not a nutritious. Weetabix is better than most cereals in terms of sugar content.

JennyOnAPlate · 17/02/2014 10:49

My 4 and 6 year olds have 2 weetabix followed by a slice of toast each.

jenniferalisonphillipasue · 17/02/2014 10:50

My dd (6) had 6 the other day. She is v slight but muscley with a full six pack. She wanted porridge after. She had been ill the previous two days so hopefully was just catching up.

FoxesRevenge · 17/02/2014 10:50

I think Weetabix has shrunk in size. I swear they were bigger years ago.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 17/02/2014 11:16

I had two as a child, four as a teenager, and now one or two.

Warm milk, sultanas and sliced banana. Yum.
