About Weetabix portion size?

JammyTodger · 17/02/2014 10:23

DH thinks I am over-feeding 4yo DS by giving him 2 Weetabix for breakfast. He is a slim boy and always hungry. Surely 2 Weetabix isn't excessive?? How many do your 4 yo boys eat?

He is very regular Grin

He has grown 7 inches in 8 months. .is now 6 feet, skinny but with an amazing six pack.Goes to the gym regularly, plays football.

My food bill is huge.

Aworryingtrend · 17/02/2014 11:38

16mo DS has 1.5 Weetabix for breakfast plus a banana.

Katekate77 · 17/02/2014 11:44

My 10 month old daughter had 2 this morning with mashed up fruit in it Confused

My other 10 month old, her twin, had toast and jam then most of 1 weetabix!!

They are not chunky babies and don't seem to struggle with this amount.

firesidechat · 17/02/2014 11:55

My children had 2 Weetabix for breakfast for many years and they were very slim (almost underweight) children and now very slim adults.

Your husband is being very unreasonable.

2rebecca · 17/02/2014 12:21

If he's slim then 2 is fine. if you overfeed a child they become fat, although children are supposed to be skinnier than adults so some parents think their child is chunky when they are fat.
I never worried about how much my kids ate when they were young as long as they stayed slim. Kids are more active than adults so can need more calories relative to their size.
I'd be giving wholemeal bread later in the day with fruit or bringing forward their evening meal time for those chomping half a dozen weetabix in the early evening.

BizzieBoo · 17/02/2014 12:57

My 2 year old DD would eat 3 if she could and she it tall and slight and very active! Instead she'll have 2 and ask for toast/fruit/yoghurt/etc and will still eat lunch and dinner! Grin

MummyPig24 · 17/02/2014 13:08

Almost 4yo dd has 2 weetabix followed by fruit.

6yo ds has 2 weetabix followed by fruit and more often than not toast too. He is slim and active but he eats a lot.

Objection · 17/02/2014 13:10

I always give my charges two. Its not particularly unhealthy (depends on what you put on top) so IMO they can eat as much as they want. I'd much rather have them full of Weetabix than sugary cereals, crap (sweets, biscuits) and even toast tbh.

Ellisisland · 17/02/2014 13:18

My 2 year old will eat 2 weetabix and a large banana every morning. I hate to think how much he will eat as a teenager Shock

paulapantsdown · 17/02/2014 13:22

My 12 year old is getting through about 6 a day a the moment. Either that or a bucket of cornflakes. I was the same as a kid, couldn't get enough cereal.

Your husband is a meany!

WildThong · 17/02/2014 13:27

Agree with foxes weetabix have shrunk.

Oh and YADNBA op, 2 is absolutely fine.

JammyTodger · 17/02/2014 17:28

It's not only Weetabix that have shrunk. Everything seems smaller these days, except my arse.

frogspoon · 17/02/2014 19:45

Think 2 Weetabix is fine, as long as he is healthy. You have said he is slim and hungry, so I see no logical reason not to give him more food.

legoplayingmumsunite · 17/02/2014 19:53

I eat one, my DB eats 4, DD1 (6) has one plus porridge or two with no porridge, DD2 (4) loves cereal and will happily have 3 bowls of porridge or 5 weetabix at breakfast time, although her usual portion is 2-3. She tends to have a tiny tea though, she obviously knows to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.

Both DDs walk a mile to school each day and are rib counting skinny so I'm not planning to control their diet any time soon.

HandragsNGladbags · 17/02/2014 20:00

DD2's record is 4 (she's 2) but usually 2. Must fill her up though because she is never that fussed about lunch.

I eat three if calorie counting as I find the extra 60cals seem to keep m full much longer than 2!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 17/02/2014 20:11

Mine both have 3 followed by a piece of fruit and then cornflakes or toast. Both a healthy weight, one skinny. They eat a light lunch then a big dinner. They are both v active though.

Quangle · 17/02/2014 20:22

My 4.5 yo has 1.5 Weetabix. He is a bit tubby though he shouldn't be judging by the thread.

giraffesCantBoogie · 17/02/2014 20:25

It's not like it is chocolate, it's fine

Sunshine200 · 17/02/2014 20:27

My dd is 2 & has 1.5 followed by some fruit, so 2 for your boy sounds fine to me.

racmun · 17/02/2014 20:30

My 3.5 year old ds has 2 weetabix and a handful of shreddies followed by 2 slices of toast. He eats the lot.

Unless your ds isn't eating it all and you're chucking it in the bin I don't see the problem.

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 17/02/2014 20:49

What are you lot using to have 4 weetabix? My bowls are utterly crap with no room at all with just 2 in!

Whatdoiknowanyway · 17/02/2014 21:56

My relatively skinny daughter would have 4-6 weetabix for breakfast every day. The she went to university and switched to porridge. When I asked why she said 'mother do you have any idea how much weetabix costs'?
Er, yes!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 17/02/2014 22:22

My parents have a branded Weetabix bowl that came free with the cereal about a hundred fifteen years ago or something. It is not particularly big.

It's all about the layering.

Two on the bottom, next to each other like an old couple lying side by side.

Then two on top, at right angles. Like building Weetabix Jenga.

While we're on the subject of Weetabix, I can't bear to have it sloshing about in too much milk. They should be completely sodden but not a drop more.

HildaOgden · 17/02/2014 22:32

Are you all putting sugar on top?how much?

thenamestheyareachanging · 17/02/2014 22:33

My 1 year old eats 2 weetabix and a banana for breakfast. 4 year old has a slice of toast as well. They're both on the skinny side.
