Do only certain people shop there ?

Waitrose is only posh because so many people who don't shop there think that it is. I find their fruit and veg keeps a bit longer than Asda and Tescos and they have some obscure ingredients in there if I want to cook something exotic. Ocado is miles better though, as their fruit and veg doesn't go from warehouse to store to me, it comes to me directly from the distribution centre. Ocado are severing tires with Waitrose over the next few years and partnering with Morrisons, hence Morrisons using their warehouses atm according to the Waitrose delivery man.

Is it just me who couldn't give a shiney shit about my 'shopping experience'?

I just want to get in, get my shopping and get out again.

It's a supermarket not a social gathering.

Southeastdweller · 16/02/2014 14:29

I give a very shiny shit. I like food shopping so the better experience I have is what I go for, though certainly can't afford to buy everything from Waitrose or Ocado.

BrawToken · 16/02/2014 16:33

Waitrose is lovely but when I go in for a pint of milk/loaf of bread, I always spend about £50. I can't usually afford that so I only ever go in around pay day! I don't see it as posh but I do see it as a supermarket for food lovers and quality costs. And the staff are lovely.

BrawToken · 16/02/2014 16:35

That's interesting Ken, Morrisons is my everyday supermarket, I think the produce there is good quality.

Waitrose has a more interesting selection than other English supermarkets and some of those more interesting things are quite expensive. Its basics are the same price as anywhere else and nothing special IMO. M&S is much better at high quality fresh food (meat, fruit, vegetables).

SeaSickSal · 16/02/2014 17:40

I work opposite a Waitrose and go in for cakes for work and stuff sometimes or a bit of lunch. When I have occasionally been pushed and needed to go for an actual shop it has cost roughly 3 times what the same food would cost in Morrisons.

It is good for speciality food, special things for parties. But not for every day. It would not be sustainable for someone on the average salary to shop there.

Beaverfeaver · 16/02/2014 17:47

My local shop is a large waitrose so often shop there out of convenience. It's a half an hour journey to my nearest tesco or asda so the additional time, hassle and petrol cost isn't worth it.

However, I went to tesco today for the first time in a while and was excited about the potential savings.

Nothing was cheaper.
I spent the exact same as I would in waitrose.

The toilet roll was 15p cheaper though.

I won't bother in future, unless is maybe an asda, but I have been very unimpressed the last time I went there too.

Co op is also local to me, but far more expensive than waitrose.

I have no idea why people have it in their mind that waitrose is expensive

revealall · 16/02/2014 18:09

Beaverfeaverer seriously?

Every other supermarket has fruit and veg on offers for 50p or £1. The fruit and veg offers in Waitrose consist of 2 for £3 mostly.
Meat is premium prices and you can't find free range eggs for under £1.45 and that's for only 4 eggs.
Having said that Tesco's is very expensive too if it's not on offer.Ihave no idea why anyone thinks Tesco's costs less.

Beaverfeaver · 16/02/2014 18:17

I only buy the odd bit of fruit in waitrose.

Eggs and veg come from butchers, market, farm shop etc

Pheonixisrising · 16/02/2014 18:23

I shop at waitrose , sainsburys and aldi

Love the fact that waitrose do an 'essential' creme brûlée , I mean , can you imagine every housewife in the country running out of creme brûlée - it would be a fucking disaster

LadyMaryLikesCake · 16/02/2014 18:39

M&S seem to have a lot of ready meals/quick things to cook, not a great deal if you want to cook from scratch though.

I hate shopping, both for food and other stuff, so I'd rather spend a couple of pounds more to make it a little more bearable.

Ocado, LaQ Grin I eat a lot of organic so use Abel and Cole as well. If I really can't be arsed I'll go to M&S.

I went to Asda once with an old neighbour. I'm still recovering. The meat was vile and ended up in the bin.

LucilleBluth · 16/02/2014 19:27

I park at Asda in Newark and walk to Waitrose and then back......I'm full of contradictions me.

LadyMaryLikesCake · 16/02/2014 20:03
Grin
Philoslothy · 16/02/2014 20:15

I think it is more money in Waitrose even just for basics.

4 pints of semi skimmed milk in Asda is £1 , in Waitrose it is £1.39
Warburton's thick toastie loaf in Asda is £1, in Waitrose is £1.45
Asda own brand white bread is 65p ( there was another for 50p but couldn't see if it was sliced. A Waitrose essential loaf is 90p.
Essential Waitrose minced beef is £9.48 a kg, in Asda it is £4 a kg.

I think it is a MN myth that shopping in Waitrose is no more expensive.

To balance that up we have much less wastage from Ocado/Waitrose than Tesco or Asda which does add to the value.

WhereIsMyHat · 16/02/2014 22:47

Tesco where I live is easily if not more expensive than ocado, without question. Asda is significantly cheaper but the ones close to me are not nice places and I prefer spend an extra £10 on not getting stressed out.

Ocado plus lidl for fruit/ veg/ eggs is my winning combo. Works out cheaper that when I shopped at tesco for the 5 years previous to starting my current routine.

I find shops like tesco only stock certain products in certain areas. Our metro only stocks top brand pasta for example which is highly annoying when you run out after everywhere else has shut and you have to pay £2.50 for a bag of bloody fusili!
