to wonder what's with the almost religious devotion to putting out the bins?

There's a red warning for wind where I live. It's already blowing a gale and there's driving sleety rain. It's not nice out there.

And yet all down my street people are struggling out in the gale to put their sodding recycling bins out. I mean, what the fuck? Even with the crappy bit of brick they've shoved on top, I suspect that it won't be a match for 100mph gusts, the muppets.

But it's Wednesday night and that means you HAVE to put the bins out. Sheesh.

Why? Why do they do that? What makes sensible people throw caution to the not inconsiderable storm force wind and stick a plastic box full of plastic things out on the street?

All ours have been out too and consequently there are blue bins lying about all over. To be honest when I put ours out this morning I didn't even give the weather a second thought! I hate missing bin day have done it a few times and it's horrible having to leave them full for another fortnight it does my head on.

Plus maybe they prefer that to having it indoors still?

Well in our case it would be two weeks recycling because we have black bins one week and blue bins the other. As my husband recycles with zeal, our blue bin is usually overflowing a few days before the collection is due. However, given the weather here at the moment, I think even he would keep the bin off the street.

No strong feelings but should cheer us all up

Our rubbish is collected alternate weeks, if I hadn't put it out this morning, my non-recyclable rubbish would have to wait another 2 weeks and I don't have the space to store 1 months worth of rubbish.

It wasn't too windy here first thing though and I did go and get my bins as soon as they'd been emptied, there are a lot of wheelie bins scattered around the road though

errrr - well, what if they don't get up in time to do it in the morning? I don't know where you live but we only have our recycling collected one week and the rubbish the next week. So, if I forget to put the bins out, I have to fit a month's worth in one bin. Which is sometimes easy and I have room to spare but sometimes means they're full to overflowing.

I put mine out regardless of the weather. I have a small house so there isn't room to store recyclable materials and I can't wait 2 weeks for the main bin to be emptied.

Our council won't uplift bins that have any rubbish sticking out that means the lid can't shut.

It was like an obstacle course driving home along my streets tonight dodging all the black recycling bins that had blown all over the roads. To be fair though it was a lovely morning here, the wind and rain didn't start until lunchtime.

They could get up tomorrow and put them out once the storm has passed surely? They don't come and collect them first thing anyway. Next door's is merrily blowing down the street as I speak.

Yes, yes, of course you can't wait two weeks, but when the weather warning says 100mph gusts tonight then easing off tomorrow morning, surely waiting 10 hours wouldn't kill you?

I'm sure the folk with cars parked down the street will be delighted if someone's empty tin of beans thwacks a chip in their car paint work.

So you guys all would stick your plastic boxes outside when its blooming obvious that they'll get blown away. Do you not think its just a little bit numpty like?

Ha ha, OP, I had exactly the same rant last time we had high winds round here! Whole street's recycling ended up blowing merrily in the wind, apart from mine that is, cause I used common sense! My neighbours still have a recycling bin with no lid, cause it flew away

My neighbour is fanatical about putting his recycling up at the 'right' time. He did it today (never mind the 80mph winds) and came moaning to me that the contents of his bin are now at the four winds (which he had to chase and collect). And, when he'd collected, he STILL put the bin back on the pavement .

Some places collect them before dawn. Our bins are collected at about 6am!

They come at 4:10am here. Like clockwork. So they'd have to go out tonight, and people will put them out tonight.

And we have a lot of wind and rain. It's being battered. There are sailors around nearby, so I'm expecting tonight to be bad. Tomorrow won't be any better, though. Hell, next fortnight could be just as bad.

Not round here Corus, the times vary. Sometimes it's 7am, sometimes early afternoon. Wheelie bins, fortnightly.

Ours have been out since yesterday. We are required to have them out by 6am and to leave them out until they are emptied. No blinking way am I getting up at quarter to six to do it, especially in half term.

I know in my heart of hearts that they won't be emptied until late in the day (they've just been for the brown one and the blue one is still unemptied) but I just know if I don't then they'll change the schedule.

However it's not that windy (yet) here in Fife, a couple of less full bins have blown over up the road but our blue one (landfill) is extra heavy as I didn't bother putting it out last time.

They come before 5am here, sorry but my bins would be out as they wont collect them for another two weeks.

The bin men here come around 8am so I put the bins out when we get up, I have been caught out once or twice when they've been before 7am.

We have a wheely bin, with a lid, it was full, so heavy when it went out so wasn't going anywhere, I bought it back on my way out to take the kids to school

The bin lorries have been out today, if I didn't put it out, I'd have to store the rubbish for another 2 weeks and bins won't be collected if the lid isn't fully closed

They are rarely collected before midday round here...
