to wonder what's with the almost religious devotion to putting out the bins?

There's a red warning for wind where I live. It's already blowing a gale and there's driving sleety rain. It's not nice out there.

And yet all down my street people are struggling out in the gale to put their sodding recycling bins out. I mean, what the fuck? Even with the crappy bit of brick they've shoved on top, I suspect that it won't be a match for 100mph gusts, the muppets.

But it's Wednesday night and that means you HAVE to put the bins out. Sheesh.

Why? Why do they do that? What makes sensible people throw caution to the not inconsiderable storm force wind and stick a plastic box full of plastic things out on the street?

What do you propose people do with their rubbish and recycling, then, OP?!

babyheaves · 12/02/2014 17:49

ROLF @ Wotta.

They turn up at 8:30am here and since I'm up at 6, IMO that's not classed as first thing! I usually put mine out on a Wed night as well, but since I'm currently concerned that my trampoline may go at any time, I don't give out much hope for the bins.

Wuxiapian - I propose that people put it out to be collected, after the storm has passed.

Did I mention the 100mpg gusts? You know, the extreme weather with the red warning thing that they've not issued in about two years?

Not good for bins.

mph, not mpg. doh.

Given that there's a red weather warning and that many roads are closed due to fallen trees + a no travel alert in the red areas -

I'd wait till I heard the rumble of the lorry before putting the stupid sacks we have to use round here out, be happy to do the same for any neighbours who needed me to help as well. Better that that flying rubbish all over the shop.

There's nought so rare as common sense babyheave Wink. Those same people will be moaning about rats in a fortnight.

I've put mine out, it's full and I don't fancy keeping dirty cat litter for another two weeks.

DarkTherapy · 12/02/2014 17:58

Ours are first collection and the round is not permitted to start until 7:00am so I'll put them out tomorrow morning - if I remember in time. Neighbours have theirs out currently so there will be rubbish strewn around the street in the morning. Worst was when there was used sanitary items billowing around the hedgerows.

YouTheCat · 12/02/2014 18:00

If my bin wasn't absolutely chock full, I'd probably leave it if the weather was terribly windy.

However, I don't know what my next but one neighbours' excuses are. Their general rubbish bin hasn't been put out in nearly 2 months - mingers.

babyheaves · 12/02/2014 18:01

Sure CorusKate, but your bin won't get collected if its blown down the jefffing street strewing its contents along the way.

Lets just remind ourselves what the BBC weather pages say about a red warning.

"The Met Office has issued a red warning for wind for west Wales and north-west England for 13:30 to 21:00 GMT on Wednesday, meaning there is a "risk to life" and people should "avoid dangerous areas" with widespread damage expected."

Risk to life, Widespread damage = NOT GOOD FOR BINS.

Plus someone could get killed by a flying wheelie bin...

tbf babyheaves they haven`t said dont put out your bins Wink Grin

I do agree, if not essential or you can wait till the storm has passed best not put them out, but I guess people are worried about them not being emptied.

ShadowFall · 12/02/2014 20:00

Round where I live, we get rubbish collected one week and recycling the next.

Usually our bins are full on collection day, the bin men seem to be turning up earlier each week, and we really can't afford to miss collections if we don't want to have rubbish or recycling sat around the house for weeks.

We missed a recycling week in November, as we had gone away on holiday for a few days, and we still haven't caught up from that. Even with sneaking recycling into the spare space in the rubbish bin, we've still got a recycling backlog.

So, as long as we're not on holiday, our bins go out the night before, regardless of the weather.

babyheaves · 12/02/2014 20:04

Well my up and over garage door has blown in and the garage roof is not looking good Shock

So, it seems like me not putting the bins out is moot, as the contents of my garage are out instead.

blackteaplease · 12/02/2014 20:10

I was moaning to DH about this earlier. We have weekly collections here on a Thursday with no wheelie bins, the bin men don't come at the crack of dawn. On my way home from the school run today there were loads of black bags outside peoples houses, they will be all over the roads by now.

I don't get it, put it out in the morning.

BOFtastic · 12/02/2014 20:26

How is your trampoline coping?

babyheaves · 12/02/2014 20:33

The trampoline is fine. The garage door is nailed down and is wedged. The new fence panels that we put up after the last heavy winds are still there.

I want chocolate after that little drama but am I fuck going out to the shop. We keep popping out the back every so often to make sure the garage is still holding up.

OP posts:
GingerMaman · 12/02/2014 20:37

We forget. And if we don't put them out, then it's a disaster because there isn't enough space. Many a time DH has jumped out of bed early in the morning as soon as the dustbin men arrive
