Should schools/LEAs allow parents to take children out of school for a holiday (once per year, say) during term time?

There's been plenty of debate already, so let's just have a little show of hands so we can count up...

I say YES.

No education is more important. You get enough half terms etc to take your DC away.

nonmifairidere · 07/02/2014 23:20

Of course! Holidays are so much more important and educational than dull old school. It's a well known fact that children learn far more from a holiday taken during term time than during the school holidays.

SauceForTheGander · 07/02/2014 23:20

I'm a no again. I wouldn't do it I don't think

itsbetterthanabox · 07/02/2014 23:23

Not one per year no! Maybe once in the time you are at each school.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 07/02/2014 23:23

Are you being sarcastic nonmi?
You're going to make the counting tricky for the OP!

SeaSickSal · 07/02/2014 23:26

Yes. I think you'll get a skewed view of the actual support for 'no' on Mumsnet. Because a lot of people on here will be able to afford the more expensive holidays no problem. But they'll be happy consign poorer children to never having a holiday abroad.

For poor children it's going to be like going back to the early 50s where holidays abroad are an impossible dream.

orangestripe · 07/02/2014 23:28

Yes

Calloh · 07/02/2014 23:29

No.

Maybe there could be leniency every four years or so but not every year.

EmmelineGoulden · 07/02/2014 23:38

Yes. People should be obliged to educate their children (as they are) and it whould be up to them how they do that.

If our culture does not value schooling enough we need to think about why. Not try and force a narrow culture on a wide range of people who don't agree with it. That isn't a legitimate way to run a democratic country.

irishe · 07/02/2014 23:39

Yes, I think the state is over stepping here. I think one 2 week holiday a year should be allowed. Does anyone really think, that is going to impact the trajectory of a child's life? Mind you, I also think speed limits should be abolished on motorways. . .

MojitoMadness · 07/02/2014 23:49

Yes.

WooWooOwl · 07/02/2014 23:54

No.

Because not all parents can be trusted to use an allowance wisely. It's an unfortunate situation where the majority of sensible parents are paying the price for the choices of the minority, because their children's education needs to be protected.

Thanks for counting OP, looking forward to seeing the result!

polythenespam · 07/02/2014 23:57

Yes

starballbunny · 07/02/2014 23:58

Yes! One week max. And possibly not every year.

But it's not so much full holidays that make me really Angry it's odd days that people haven't been allowed for family weddings, funerals and special events.

It's being fined for adding one day on to a 1/2 term or a Friday afternoon to make a journey viable.

My DDs have had 3 odd days in 12 years, three days that are attached to special events and a very special holiday.

SoonToBeSix · 08/02/2014 00:06

Yes

MrsJoeHart · 08/02/2014 00:09

No

I do wish they wouldn't go slow at the end of each term though.
