Should schools/LEAs allow parents to take children out of school for a holiday (once per year, say) during term time?

There's been plenty of debate already, so let's just have a little show of hands so we can count up...

I say YES.

Yes.

starballbunny · 08/02/2014 01:35

In my experience it's better paid senior staff who get the choice of holidays and more junior staff who have jobs that have to provide continuous cover.

I've known DH sort out all manner of chaos with a quick phone call while he's been on leave. An awful lot of what he's paid for is the weirded mix of computing, science and analogue electronics he carries around in his head.

6cats3gingerkittens · 08/02/2014 01:41

NEVER. Just accept your responsibilities. There is no God given right to a fancy holiday in this life. Spend the family allowance on the children rather than the holiday fund.

I am sure answers will vary if we are talking about taking two days or two weeks.

ApplesinmyPocket · 08/02/2014 02:31

YES

MadIsTheNewNormal · 08/02/2014 02:32

yes IF attendance is above 95%, it clashes with no exams, it's less than 10 days

I agree with gordy

AmazingJumper · 08/02/2014 02:45

No.

bolak · 08/02/2014 02:47

Why not. School is nothing compared to the education of life. Teachers are nothing but disciples of the man and I tell my kids this every day thy will break free from society

HappyMeerkat · 08/02/2014 02:52

Here's an idea for people stating price...why not go on holiday every 2 years...I don't see why family's have to go somewhere every year...or go somewhere cheaper??

HappyMeerkat · 08/02/2014 02:52

So I guess that's a no...

dramajustfollowsme · 08/02/2014 02:52

Yes
And I am a teacher. As long as it is no longer than a week and you are prepared to work with your child to catch up in your return.
The majority of learning does not take place in a classroom. It can be hugely beneficial for kids to look outside of their own routine and see other ways of life.

Catsize · 08/02/2014 05:35

Definitely not.

Need to fix the root cause, don't play into the hands of (those bastard) holiday companies / airlines / tourist industry charging way OTT during school holidays. Don't prejudice our children's education because of corporate greed!

Yes.

Im a single Mum with a pretty decent job but I can't even afford a holiday- not even one in the last six years so saving up doesn't help. I too think it's the people who can afford holidays that are saying no. Like I said saving up for even an English holiday in school holidays has been impossible so far

In some workplaces not everyone can have the school holidays off so, if they have families what are they meant to do?
