Should schools/LEAs allow parents to take children out of school for a holiday (once per year, say) during term time?

There's been plenty of debate already, so let's just have a little show of hands so we can count up...

I say YES.

I'm a teacher. Would you be ok with me having two weeks off in term time (or even just a week) so that I can go on holiday with my own family when prices are cheaper/it suits DH/it fits in with family weddings etc etc???

Because, let's face it, my salary is never going to pay for a fabulous holiday in "real" holiday time.

Newsflash: teachers and children have different roles within a classroom, pasbeaucoupdegendarme.

GingerMaman · 07/02/2014 22:47

Yes definitely!

ClockWatchingLady · 07/02/2014 22:47

This may be an unreasonable request in itself, but please can posts have a clear yes or no in them somewhere? I want to count and report back a percentage tomorrow... Smile

No

CouthyMow · 07/02/2014 22:48

Yes if Reception-Y5, and Y7 / Y8.

Y6 no, Y9 no if already started GCSE's (some schools do, some don't), definitely not in Y10/Y11.

GimmeDaBoobehz · 07/02/2014 22:49

Yes.

CouthyMow · 07/02/2014 22:50

So it's ok for a healthy DC with good attendance to be taken on holiday, but not for a DC with not-so-good attendance through disability? That'd be discriminative...

Redbird12 · 07/02/2014 22:51

Yes up to Yr 8/9

No - a teacher's job is hard enough without legitimizing removal of DCs at random points throughout the term.

Having said that I don't see the particular issue with a DC being absent the last couple of days of term when little is done, or say a long weekend, or allowances made for special circumstances.

Yes, I'm torn but I think overall yes, without prejudice.

MrsOakenshield · 07/02/2014 23:09

no

the vast majority of holidays aren't the slightest bit educational, or there's no actual need for a 10 year old to go to Australia when they are 10 (what will they do on their gap year??), but you'll never get that crowd to realise it.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 07/02/2014 23:14

Yes (I've spent all evening arguing for this on the other threads, as much for the libertarian principle as anything)

After discussion with the headteacher and at their discretion, as previously.
