Should schools/LEAs allow parents to take children out of school for a holiday (once per year, say) during term time?

There's been plenty of debate already, so let's just have a little show of hands so we can count up...

I say YES.

Yes

HSMMaCM · 07/02/2014 22:27

No. But if they're going to insist on spending the last week of every term messing about watching DVDs etc, then yes during the last week of term.

Italiangreyhound · 07/02/2014 22:27

And as along as it avoided the main exam time!

paperlantern · 07/02/2014 22:28

No. It's not about your child it's about the other 29 who are disrupted.

SaltySeaBird · 07/02/2014 22:31

Yes if criteria are met (high attendance record, no more than 5 days a year, not within x weeks prior to examinations, not to be spent at home playing video games it has to be for family time away from the home environment, permission to be granted in advance).

Bloodyteenagers · 07/02/2014 22:32

I am torn.
I would say yes but to only those with high attendance, and not a yearly thing.
But then, what about children who are ill a lot, so attendance isn't 95%+. Or the children who have a lot of absences because they have medical appointments. The families that basically, through no fault of their own will never be over a certain high percentage.

It would be nice to go back to a system of at the heads discretion. But I can understand why this is no longer the case because of the amount of angry parents... Ok angry isn't the right word. But 'those' parents iyswim.

No

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob · 07/02/2014 22:33

Yes, of course. People often accuse Labour of being an interfering and controlling force but look at what the Tories are doing.

JerseySpud · 07/02/2014 22:34

Yes as long as attendance is good enough

hoppinghare · 07/02/2014 22:35

Manchesterhistorygirl · 07/02/2014 22:35

Yes.

yummystepford · 07/02/2014 22:36

I agree with it being banned. BUT only if there are much stricter regulations to stop holiday companies and airlines charging more money during school holidays.

Annunziata · 07/02/2014 22:36

This is such a weird place, a certificate for 100% attendance has everyone shrieking in horror but it's okay to be allowed a holiday!

chrisrobin · 07/02/2014 22:36

Yes

Wantsunshine · 07/02/2014 22:37

If a child has 2 weeks off every year of their school life this adds up to 2 terms of school by the time they leave sixth form...
