AIBU?

To think that married couples should not 'celebrate' Valentine's day?

It all seems a bit pointless to me, although to be honest I was never much of a fan even before I was married.

I would rather just do something to mark our wedding anniversary, but we always seem to end up giving each other cards in a rather half-hearted effort.

What do others do? Am concerned I might just be a cold-hearted and wizened old bag.

Its pointless to you so you think no-one else should do anything about it?

Are you always so self-centred?

What difference does it make to you what other couples do or don't do on valentines day?

I think they should! We do!

Usually get the M&S deal if we have the funds, banish the kids and try not to get too full up for afters. Sorry tmi.

Yanbu though as every couple us different.

MooMaid I agree.

But I want both. And thankfully get both.

That's just it Figster, commercialised bollocks. I can think of nothing worse than going out and sitting in a restaurant full of couples being romantic just because it has been decreed Valentines day.

We do cards and well have a glass of wine or something in the evening. We celebrate anything! (Started when we had a bloody awful year...about 20 years ago). Now we do cards, dinner, nice wine whenever we can think of an occasion.

We don't go out though, just cook something at home, lay table with best china and cutlery, best wine glasses, candles etc. is nice.

DH and I have been giving each other the same card every year since we married Grin

It is daft - surely when married, it is replaced by your Anniversary?

But I like being acknowledged ... And I think it is mutual

Well don't do it then OP.

But don't dictate to other married couples that they shouldn't either.

We will be celebrating. We don't usually do presents but we do get each other a card, have a nice meal and then an early night Wink

Why should February 14 be any more romantic than any other day? Really.

Report
Bloodyteenagers · 03/02/2014 21:57

Romance can happen on any day of the year. We find it more special that we do random things spontaneously, than a day that feels forced.

But everyone is different. And some only do things on this day abd their anniversary. Up to them really.

Each to their own, but we both feel it's a marketing invention non-event.
We sometimes give each other a present, but only if we spotted something extraordinarily hideous in the one pound shop or so.
Dh knows I would clobber him if he bought me a "romantic" box of chocolate or bottle of perfume Grin

We only really exchange cards for Valentines. I think last year we didn't bother at all. Our wedding anniversary isn't long after, so we celebrate then instead as it is a date that means something to us.

I don't care what other married couples do.

Valentines is S.A.D. (Singles Awareness Day)

Couldn't care less what other people do, but I was always under the impression that St Valentines was for secret romance, not for once you had got together so we've never celebrated it.

We celebrate our anniversary too! But that's in the summer. And we celebrate the first date we went on....

But regardless of whether you think it's commercial nonsense or not, I always thought the tradition of Valentines day was to declare your hitherto undeclared feelings. Surely if you are married or in a long term relationship it becomes a bit pointless?

But I agree, each to their own. Just glad I'm not the only one who doesn't bother with it.

Me and my DH will celebrate it. I am really bad at asking anyone for help like babysitting. The last time DH and I had a babysitter was our anniversary in july. It probably sounds lame but I feel more able to ask my folks to babysit if it's a 'special occasion' so I use February the 14th as an excuse really. Not sure why anyone other than my poor parents who have to babysit would have a problem with that really.

I was always led to believe that Valentine's cards were a secret thing that you sent to someone you fancied, without revealing your identity.

I'd agree that it seems rather pointless between married couples.

To me it's more of a fun kind of thing you did when you were young.

Each to their own. It does not hurt does it?. Married couples should do whatever they like with their married lives. I could not care less. Every year DH has to remind me what day it is and brings flowers, not really important day for me. He forgets our anniversary or my birthday he never doesthen he loses a body part.

If it is pointless then it is pointless for everyone, I don't see why married couples are singled out. I like it.
