Next door neighbours and party in the garden.

Not sure about this. Neighbours (their garden backs onto our front drive) are having a party in the back garden. They have a big marquee and its obviously a significant birthday, 18th I think. Music is currently blaring out, it's pretty noisy. I have 2 kids trying to sleep who are unable to, they have tv on trying to drown out the noise but its not working at all. What do I do? I don't want to be a party pooper but I would have thought they must realise that this is a residential area, most of the houses around here have young children.
I suppose it's a Saturday so at least they don't have school tomorrow.
What do you think is a reasonable time to go round and ask them to turn it down? I'm thinking leave it till 11?

Im sure that its a one off, def not worth complaining about if you are moving anyway! I don't think that loud music till one and then turned down a bit is too horrendous for a Saturday, I understand you were tired but live and let live and all that if its a one off xxx

SirChenjin · 03/02/2014 18:26

It's not a one-off - the OP explained that.

AnnaLegovah · 03/02/2014 20:03

It always amazes me that the people who say 'live and let live' only think it applies to their need to have loud and disruptive parties, not to their neighbours who just want to get some shuteye. Hmm

gualsa · 03/02/2014 22:16

But what is to gain from complaining. There is no specific law against it ...same with bonfires. Go ahead by all means and voice your grievances or take revenge if it makes you feel better. It won't change anything.

merrymouse · 04/02/2014 07:00

The point of talking to the neighbours is

  1. They might not have realised how much the sound was carrying or that anybody was inconvenienced and next time might agree to turning the music down/move the party inside e.g. at midnight
  2. You can ask them to warn you next time.

If you don't think there is likely to be a next time there is no reason to mention it.

If on the other the advice is not to speak to them because they would say "Get out of here, it's my house, I can do what I want", I don't think they can really be portrayed as happy go lucky funsters who just want to have a good time.

Of course there is a point to complaining - the law is on your side and they can be forced to stop. No point in complaining about the unjustness of that - you take a chance when you hold a noisy, outdoor party, and if people object (as they are entitled to do) then tough luck.

because its absolutely outrageous to be so disrespectful as to keep neighbours awake, basically treating a residential property as a party venue, even once, is once too many

BringOnTheScience · 17/11/2017 11:23

@77077ok

The party was more than 3 years ago. I should imagine that it's finished by now.

Why have you resurrected a thread from February 2014???

77077ok · 17/11/2017 11:35

I'm sure they have had many many more ludicrous noisy parties since then, and ruined many more weekends for their neighbours.

Uniquearien · 30/06/2018 19:24

I have a 17 year old and to be honest if all they are doing at 18 is celebrating there birthday then let me enjoy there selves we were all young once the teens today are on drugs fighting loosing there lives kids sleep through anything and I’m sure when your children get older they will want to do the same don’t go round there just leave them to enjoy there self a little loud music is not killing no more it’s just a lack of sleep

Uniquearien · 30/06/2018 19:30
