AIBU to refuse OH's name choices?

OH likes the names Dahlia pronounced 'Dah-lee-ah' and Scarlett... He also wants the middle names to be Rose for either name choice. For me, these are far too unusual whereas I'm more of a heard of name person.
Myself liking Charlotte and Katie.

AIBU to completely disagree with those two name choices? (He is getting surname same as his) or should I maybe "try" to like them? What are your opinions on them anyway?

My daughter's acronym was very nearly GBH until a helpful relative spotted it!

I don't like katie purely because of katie Hopkins. She's ruined that name.

'I freely admit I'm a bit of a name snob but I just think names are so important. They are loaded with meaning and a parent should think about whether a name will be a help or a hindrance to their child during their life. Not just about whether its trendy or different.'

I'm not suggesting the OP chooses an 'in' name I'm just suggesting she doesn't have to be bound by the boring Charlotte and Katie. There are thousands of real, currently underused names that are more than fit for purpose.

I'm not a fan of made up names, but I am a fan of people using their imagination a bit.

DP and I can't agree on a girls name either. We've agreed in a boys, so at our scan in 3 weeks it could be peaceful or the beginning of an all out battle! We both like Scarlett and Jasmine.... But we don't LOVE them. I'm finding it hard!

I had a hamster called Daisy... Its all so difficult!

I would automatically pronounce it Dahl-ee-a probably because I'm common, it's a lovely name. Not too keen on Scarlett though and Charlotte is a hugely overused name in these parts.

Katie Rose has a nice ring to it.

Darla is a good compromise

It should ideally be pronounced Cat-leen as it's the Irish spelling of Kathleen, but it's more often pronounced Kate- lyn in the UK. But that's no reason to spell it like that

Everyone goes through this (don't they??) one of you thinks they've found the 'right' name, the other vetoes and so you start again until you find a name you can agree on.

No don't try and like his names just find something you can agree on. Neither of us got our first choice but picked names we both loved eventually after much discussion

LoveCat technically it should be spelt Caitlín and pronounced cotch-leen.

Kathleen is far more common in Ireland than Caitlin.

Dahlia is a lovely name.

Scarlett is very common these days.

Charlotte and Katie are both reasonable names but fairly common and not especially inspiring. I say that as someone with a very common and dull as dishwater 70's name

Do you have any other DC OP? If so i'm surprised you think Scarlett is unusual, there are loads at the toddler groups round here. I've not heard Charlotte for a while tho, not out of my age group (30s).

For what it's worth (nothing) i like Dahlia (i think the way your DH pronounces it is the american way), but agree everyone here will say Day-lia, so she'd spend her life correcting people.

It's irrelevant what anyone else likes, it needs to be something you and your DH like equally. We had a similar problem with DS. DH decided on a name he liked, i didn't, and it was up to me to come up with an alternative, because as far as he was concerned, the perfect name was already there (it was Victor btw - apologies to all Victors). We didn't end up with it and found ONE other boys name we both liked - it took the whole 9 months tho.

I would do the list/crossing off thing if you want a more well known name. Turn to the classics if you want something more unusual.

There are 5 Scarletts at my nursery and only 1 Charlotte. Charlotte is a beautiful name and is ageless.

Interesting, squoosh - I was told by Irish relatives that it was Cat-leen (with a lot of chhhing in between the t and the l) but we are close to the Northern Ireland border so I don't know if accents make a difference?

Also my keyboard can't do the i with the accent on it...

Yes Lovecat the accent would make a difference. Cotch-leen, cacchh-leen, the same name with regional differences.
