AIBU?

AIBU to refuse OH's name choices?

ATotallyOriginalUserName · 31/01/2014 18:16

OH likes the names Dahlia pronounced 'Dah-lee-ah' and Scarlett... He also wants the middle names to be Rose for either name choice. For me, these are far too unusual whereas I'm more of a heard of name person.
Myself liking Charlotte and Katie.

AIBU to completely disagree with those two name choices? (He is getting surname same as his) or should I maybe "try" to like them? What are your opinions on them anyway?

Scarlett is ok. The others are not my cup of tea. The only saving grace of Charlotte is that it can be shortened to Lottie

Dah-li-a would be called Day-li-a all her life so not a good choice as well as being bloody awful

Your choices are much better. Use Dahlia as the embarrassing middle name if you have to. Rose is nice. Scarlett is a bit naff - sorry

What exactly do you all mean by a 'boring name'? A name is a name. It doesn't have to set off fireworks. My rule of thumb was to put Great Aunt/Uncle in front of the name. If it works it is OK, if not it is stupid.
Lydia would have been my name for a DD2 if I had had one. Charlotte is lovely. Dahlia is not. Scarlett is not unusual, but if you like it, why not? Names do not, I repeat, have to set off fireworks.

In line with someone else's comment, you can always wait to see what she looks like. We had a name picked for our baby if we had a boy & a tentative one for a girl - when she came out, we said 'yes, she's called x' then looked properly at her and thought 'she looks more like y'. And Y she shall hereby be known as.

My real name [not matilda!] is an Unusual Name. Actually it's become common now but in the 70s, 80s, no way.

I got stick about it sometimes when I was a kid, even teachers were like, "What? Spelled how?"

But when I was older I was really glad I had a distinctive name. And not something like Katie or Charlotte.

I say if the baby is coming out of your bajango then you get the final say on the name.

Dalia Royce is a (not very nice) character in the sitcom Suburgatory, as shown on E4: suburgatory.wikia.com/wiki/Dalia_Royce

For me, that is a bit too close to Dahlia Rose, but it's not the sitcom stuff of legend so who knows how long that would endure.

DH and I struggled to agree on a name we both liked. We got there in the end though, even if he liked the nn and I liked the full name. DS is known by the nn. It's grown on me.

Personally I love Dahlia and think Charlotte is duller than a very dull thing. But my opinion is neither here nor there. What you need to do is buy two copies of a baby name book and two highlighters, work your way through them and then reconvene. I think both parents should love their child's name.

The Black Dahlia might overshadow the name a bit but I do think it's lovely. (the name not the murder)

Kaitlin is spelt Caitlin . It's not my real name but one of my favourite names. I'd laugh if I saw it with a K.

Dahlia is awful, Katie isn't a name it's a diminutive. Rose and Scarlett are lovely.

Don't like Charlotte.

My DD is Scarlett, the benefits are very little in the way of nicknames. She was Lettie as a baby but she's only Scarlett now.

I always saw a Scarlett as a ball breaker and a woman that never took any shit.

children have so many different and unusual names these days, that they really don't get teased for much. It would have have a rude meaning to get teased.
None of the names you have in your OP would even blink an eye in most classrooms. I do think that Dahlia would always be pronounced Day-lee-ah though.

Dh and I had a deal. We could both veto any name we didn't like, just because we didn't like it, no other reason necessary. We wrote down all names we liked and kept writing and crossing off until we found ones we both liked.

For me it is all down to your relationship really. I love him to much to impose my choice on him and his child, he loves me to much to impose his choice on me and my child.

I know I'm outing myself as old fashioned and probably a snob but what's wrong with normal names like Katie or Charlotte.....why this need to call your child names they'll have to explain/spell out for the rest of their lives like Daaah-lia? Or trendy made up names like Kenzie and Kayla and Ayla and Sonny? And while I'm ranting I also don't get the upper middle class obsession with "Sunday Supplement" names like Jasper and Tabitha and Otto and Florence. Aaand breathe......

squoosh · 01/02/2014 01:32

There's nothing wrong with names like Katie and Charlotte, hence why they're still widely used. Some people find them boring that's all.

Nothing wrong with a bit of variety. I never understand why people get so sniffy about names that are even slightly unusual.

Report
JohnCusacksWife · 01/02/2014 01:44

I think it's the implication that a "normal" name isn't good enough for MY child.... If your kid's called Otto after your great great grandfather, fair enough....otherwise it's a dog's name (I always picture a red setter for some reason...) ;-)

I quite like Dahlia and Scarlett. I also like Rose, but not with Dahlia and Scarlett. Too flowery. :)

I like Charlotte, too, but it's a bit common, IMO. I never thought about it, but Scarlett and Charlotte do sound very similiar.

I loved Clara, but my husband said it's an old lady name. I also liked Annalise (anna-lease) and Elsa, but he vetoed those as well.

You need to do what we did - you each make a list, find out what names you have in common, and chose among those.

I'm seeing a lot of Scarlett's coming through lately. There's four at my son's daycare right now Shock.

Personally, I love Caitlin (would have been the name I would have used if DS had been a DD). Classic enough that everyone can pronounce it, but I haven't had a child come through my class for years with it.

Report
squoosh · 01/02/2014 01:52

Yeah but why be confined to Harry and Lily if you don't even like those names? There are plenty of 'normal' names that aren't currently popular.

What's the difference with someone saying 'ewwww, weird unusual names aren't good enough for MY child'? None.

Report
Caitlin17 · 01/02/2014 01:52

I'd definitely pronounce Dahlia as "Day-lee-a" or "Dale-ya"

I think my pet dislikes are diminutives being used as names. "Katey, Beth,Molly,Harry" and the like.

And the Emma and John type names-why? such dull names, why bother.

I know a very cute Scarlett and a Lottie who's the absolute opposite of dull.

Katie is a bit NNy

Midnight re pronounciation of Caitlin do you say "Katelin" with a long a or "Catlin" with a short a?

I assume it is the Welsh variant of Kathleen and it should be a short a but I've heard both.

My son would have been Caitlin or Rhiannon or Jessica if he'd been a girl.
