AIBU?

AIBU to refuse OH's name choices?

ATotallyOriginalUserName · 31/01/2014 18:16

OH likes the names Dahlia pronounced 'Dah-lee-ah' and Scarlett... He also wants the middle names to be Rose for either name choice. For me, these are far too unusual whereas I'm more of a heard of name person.
Myself liking Charlotte and Katie.

AIBU to completely disagree with those two name choices? (He is getting surname same as his) or should I maybe "try" to like them? What are your opinions on them anyway?

And my UN is the first two names of Scarlett O'Hara, heroine of one of my best loved books.

We agree on any other thing all the time!! Its just this name thing... His mum wanted us to name her after her cat, Trixie... That was difficult to turn down without her going off on a mardy!

When it comes to baby names, the only way to do it is veto each other's suggestions until you find one you both like Grin

You have to both like both the names you choose. Make another list each. I agree Dahlia is horrid, but I quite like Scarlett. Charlotte is a lovely name, and can be shortened to Charlie, Lottie etc. Not so keen on Katie (It's a nickname for Catherine which I do like! At least if you have the full name they have more choices for nicknames; Kat, Kate, Kath, etc) There must be some thing. Or try foreign versions of the names you like; Caterina, Carlotta...

I have long been a fan of Dahlia pronounced with a long A, and Dahlia Rose is gorgeous. Your DH has great taste.

If you're not married and his surname isn't yours, then if he gets the surname, you get final veto over the first name.

But do try and find common ground - surely you can - your choices aren't that far apart!

My thoughts (not that they make one iota of diffference as names are so personal!!

  • Every other female child from c. 2003 - 2014 has the middle name Rose, it's the Elizabeth/Sarah/Jane/Louise of this era;

  • Scarlett has no good short form;

  • Katie: a bit lacking as the given name. Would it be Katherine/Catherine? Or Kate? Katie on the birht certificate is a bit meh;

  • Dahlia's quite good but NOBODY will pronounce it Dar-lee-ah (if that's what you meant) and she will be driven insane her entire life;

  • Charlotte is nice but a bit dull.

  • If you went for Charlotte Scarlett and if your surname was Marlett, that would be hysterically funny.

Can I suggest Amaris? My favourite unusual name.

It means "promised by God" in Hebrew, "one who is loved" in latin, and "Child of the moon" in Spanish/Old Irish and Old English. I love it (it is my daughter's middle name)

You need to keep looking at names until you find one you both like.

But, IMO, Scarlett Rose is a silly name combination. Especially if your DD turns up anytime around Valentine's Day.

Scarlet reminds of a sex blog writer, or something. Sorry

We printed out the top 100 names, each crossed out the ones we didn't like and then discussed what was left.

If we hadn't found one we both liked we would have printed out the next 100 and so on....

Amaris is a pretty name!

its a shame and a little disconcerting OP that you are happy to disregard your OH's opinion like that.. does he have the same lack of respect for you?

Okay, names I love but have not used:

Martha
Penelope
Clara
Claudia
Violet
Iris
Hope
Harriet
Connie

Make sure that it goes with the surname and that you don't end up with a comedy acronym. DD2 was nearly HRT.

having been bullied painfully throughout my school years, i'd rather not give my daughter a name which may get her teased... thats all.
