I was just chatting with OH here and I said I quite liked him on CBB. Apart from a few questionable remarks to Casey he seems a reasonably nice guy. OH reckons he has a bad reputation. Is this true? If so why?

happybubblebrain · 29/01/2014 23:04

People are so easily fooled. I don't think they looked any further than the poor me story and occasional humour. Not a bright lot those CBB voters are they.

I can't stand manipulators.

FreudiansSlipper · 29/01/2014 23:11

he is horrible man have heard too many horrible first hand stories about him

who the fuck would vote for him

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 29/01/2014 23:24

ugh I just staged my own one woman protest and sat in the kitchen refusing to watch the tv while he was on.my mother wanted to watch him.grrrrrr.

ButICantaloupe · 29/01/2014 23:36

He is absolutely vile.

In the CBB house he was really dull, I have no idea who would vote for him.

On Monday nights show he said to Casey "if you were my daughter, I would still be bathing you"

FFS. That is so disgusting, there really are no words.

frugalfuzzpig · 29/01/2014 23:37

DH served him when he worked in a posh bar.

Arrogant "don't you know who I am" type.

chickydoo · 29/01/2014 23:42

Used to live near him, served him a few pints when I was working in the pub when I was teenager. TBH he was vile. He got up to all sorts of stuff with various people & was not discreet.

But they weren't all like that back then.... Les Dawson wasn't, Dave Allen wasn't, Bob Monkhouse wasn't, Ronnie Barker wasn't.

All older than Jim Davidson, all mainstream comedians, all a thousand times funnier and more intelligent and didn't spew forth racist bigotry as part of their act.

Completely agree Compo Dave Allen is my fave comic. He was brilliant. Earlier this month they had a Dave Allen night on BBC2 Since then ive been watching loads of clips on youtube. And some full episodes of Dave Allen at Large. Before the account that was hosting the full episodes got pulled for copyright infringement.
I first noticed him on tv around 1986 when i was 13. The Dave Allen at Large stuff is fairly new to me as i was born in the 70s. I also recently bought a book... The Essential Dave Allen.

Dominodonkey · 30/01/2014 00:13

He raised thousands for charity and has spent a large amount of his time entertaining troops in dangerous parts of the world.

Of course that doesn't mean he isn't a racist , misogynist etc but people are rarely all bad or all good.

Latara · 30/01/2014 00:16

I liked celeb BB but I just knew he was going to win so I couldn't watch the final, what a shame he won :(

Darkesteyes · 30/01/2014 00:16

Dave Allen talking about women independence and sex. And how great it is. This was filmed around 1984. No slut shaming or mysogyny Just a very funny insightful intelligent man. WTF has happened between then and now.

Chippednailvarnish · 30/01/2014 00:20

spent a large amount of his time entertaining troops in dangerous parts of the world, but unfortunately he keeps coming back.

ButICantaloupe · 30/01/2014 00:22

He raised thousands for charity

Savile did that too. Raising money for charity doesn't cancel out the other behaviour.

issey6cats · 30/01/2014 00:25

WallyBantersJunkBox · 30/01/2014 00:29

Very often the army don't really get to choose who entertains them btw.

Piscivorus · 30/01/2014 00:36

I met him once in the 1980s and he was an unpleasant, obnoxious drunk but people change. I am very different now to the person I was then and, in view of the fact that he seems pleasant in the house and the one person on here who has a close contact with him today says he is a good bloke, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt

ComposHat · 30/01/2014 00:37

Darkesteyes

Yes that Dave Allen night was great. I loved Dave Allen's serious documentaries, almost like Louis Thereux before Louis Thereux. Didn't mock the people he interviewed or deride their lifestyles, just let them talk. I think he'd been a journalist before he'd been a comedian and it shows.

Darkesteyes · 30/01/2014 00:42

he was a journo Compo. He was an actor a couple of times too. In Edna O Briens stage play A Pagan Place in "72 and in Alan Bennetts tv play One Fine Day. which i would LOVE to see in its entirety. Ive developed a bit of a crush Can you tell? Blush

I found a biography about him on a site called Television Heaven and an interview he did with a journo in "98 I will link them so you can read them.

ComposHat · 30/01/2014 00:48

Please do! Oh I hadn't realised that he'd done serious acting too.

I wasn't allowed to watch his early 90s show as a kid, as he made quite free use of expletives, but I've caught up thanks to YouTube.

Darkesteyes · 30/01/2014 00:53

a younger dave allen on drunks.

Darkesteyes · 30/01/2014 00:57

An hour and a half compilation of DA

ComposHat · 30/01/2014 01:00

Aw great stuff cheers Dark

caruthers · 30/01/2014 01:50

I have always liked JD but each to their own.

It's nice to see that he's won BB after the horrible year he had last year.

LittleBabyPigsus · 30/01/2014 03:14

caruthers you like wife-beating racists? Really? Ffs why do women like women-haters?

Yeah, he had a horrible year last year because he's a cunt, long may he have terrible year after terrible year.

Agreed with the others above, there were many great comedians 'back then' who weren't racist women-haters.
