To think if I broke his toes, it's his own fault for being a twat?

Had a couple of men from a religious group at my door trying to recruit (?) people.

I politely informed them I wasn't interested and closed the door, well tried to close the door. The idiot at my door had put his foot in to try and jam it. My door is really really heavy and it does need closed with force, this man started making noises about his toe being broken Hmm

AIBU to not really care? He shouldn't have put his damn foot inside my house in the first place, and quite frankly if you do this when someone is closing their door you have nobody to blame but yourself!! It is intimidation techniques to try and force you to listen to their spiel which quite frankly I'm not interested in, in the slightest. I may have told them this

nope doesn't sound like yabu at all. cheeky bastard

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/01/2014 10:44

Yanbu!

Goldmandra · 29/01/2014 10:46

I agree with you but I'm not sure the law would.

If he takes any action against you make it clear that the force you used was purely to close the door and you have no idea his foot was in it.

He must have been very close and intruding on your personal space in order to have had his foot there. How unpleasant.

QueenofallIsee · 29/01/2014 10:48

You are not being at all unreasonable! I had this once at the door with a charity collector, he braced his foot and his arm against the door and was really uite intimidating. Then the dog knocked him off his feet (large, excitable Lab) as he was not balanced and as far as she was concerned he was in the house. He made a huge song and dance and then he put a note through the door saying he was going to sue us! Asshat. You have the right to close your own door on whomever the heck you like..his fault, not yours (unless you saw his foot and did it on purpose)

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/01/2014 10:48

That's a good point gold

Not sure it still stands but wasn't it the case that if a burglar hurt himself on a knife on your draining board your liable? Even though it's your house he shouldn't be there and was the one breaking the law Confused

MeepMeepVrooooom · 29/01/2014 10:51

I'm not so sure... Even if he could I doubt it would stick.

I genuinely never saw his foot, not sure it would have stopped me closing the door if I had though Wink

Tell him 'the lord moves in mysterious ways, but doors don't. The way they move isn't mysterious at all.

sticking your foot in a door is a fairly sure way to get squashed by it'

LaurieFairyCake · 29/01/2014 11:54

I'm eating a fucking scone Hissy and choked on it laughing at 'doors not moving in mysterious ways' Grin

Genius, lass, genius.

MintyChops · 29/01/2014 11:59

If only he had put his head in the door.....

Hissy, that's brilliant.

Although our cat would disagree,

If she's the wrong side of the door as you open it for her, she can,t figure out how to get outside!

Hissy · 29/01/2014 12:48

You've cheered me all up! Am waiting on a man to bring back my bust tyre. 3 fecking hours!

Not happy. I even had to do HOUSEWORK.

3bunnies · 29/01/2014 12:48

This will be dd2 in a few years time - though maybe trying to convert you to an ancient Egyptian. She has an uncanny knack for putting her foot in the door. I guess it is excusable at 6 when she is a grown up I hope she will learn to anticipate a closing door. He was cheeky and hopefully has learnt his lesson!

DuckworthLewis · 29/01/2014 12:58

If push ever came to shove and you found yourself in court for anything like this, remember that the ultimate decision as to whether you are 'guilty' or 'not guilty' rests with the Jury.

Even if he did try to sue you (in a civil court) the defences of volenti and contrib are your friends.

...and yes, what a twat - does he really think you will join his religious group after that performance?

Hissy · 29/01/2014 13:03

All joking aside, was he really a god-botherer? I can't believe that he'd put the foot in the door! sounds more like a potential criminal trying to gain access tbh

LessMissAbs · 29/01/2014 13:07

Absolutely. He was harassing you and trying to enter your property despite your protestations - clear case of reasonable self defence.

And as Duckworth says, any civil claim would be met by the defences of voluntary assumption of risk or contributory negligence. Ridiculous.

I'd be worried he was a potential criminal fraudster or scammer too though - very odd behaviour on his part.

Pendeen · 29/01/2014 13:07

"The idiot at my door had put his foot in to try and jam it"

This suggests that he had put his foot in the door before you slammed it?

If so, YABU if you have indeed broken his toe because of your deliberate and careless action (and to call him a 'twat' is even worse).

If not, and he put his foot there after you started to close it then he was indeed an idiot and YANBU (apart from the 'twat' comment).

WitchWay · 29/01/2014 13:09

If there's a fuss make sure you say you were a woman alone & you felt intimidated. As for the toe - ah, diddums Grin

ajandjjmum · 29/01/2014 13:14

Surely it was self-defence? A stranger was trying to force his way into your home, and your quite entitled to stop him to protect yourself.

I actually think calling him a twat is pretty reserved Pendeen!

CrazyHmissesHerbie · 29/01/2014 13:15

I'd of done more than trap his foot in the door if he had tried that at my house , you were definitely not being unreasonable - he was trying to intimidate you in your own home .
Better still I'd find out the name of whoever is in charge of him & let them know what he did .
