Had a couple of men from a religious group at my door trying to recruit (?) people.

I politely informed them I wasn't interested and closed the door, well tried to close the door. The idiot at my door had put his foot in to try and jam it. My door is really really heavy and it does need closed with force, this man started making noises about his toe being broken

AIBU to not really care? He shouldn't have put his damn foot inside my house in the first place, and quite frankly if you do this when someone is closing their door you have nobody to blame but yourself!! It is intimidation techniques to try and force you to listen to their spiel which quite frankly I'm not interested in, in the slightest. I may have told them this

If he takes any action against you make it clear that the force you used was purely to close the door and you have no idea his foot was in it.

He must have been very close and intruding on your personal space in order to have had his foot there. How unpleasant.

You are not being at all unreasonable! I had this once at the door with a charity collector, he braced his foot and his arm against the door and was really uite intimidating. Then the dog knocked him off his feet (large, excitable Lab) as he was not balanced and as far as she was concerned he was in the house. He made a huge song and dance and then he put a note through the door saying he was going to sue us! Asshat. You have the right to close your own door on whomever the heck you like..his fault, not yours (unless you saw his foot and did it on purpose)

Not sure it still stands but wasn't it the case that if a burglar hurt himself on a knife on your draining board your liable? Even though it's your house he shouldn't be there and was the one breaking the law

Absolutely. He was harassing you and trying to enter your property despite your protestations - clear case of reasonable self defence.

And as Duckworth says, any civil claim would be met by the defences of voluntary assumption of risk or contributory negligence. Ridiculous.

This suggests that he had put his foot in the door before you slammed it?

If so, YABU if you have indeed broken his toe because of your deliberate and careless action (and to call him a 'twat' is even worse).

If not, and he put his foot there after you started to close it then he was indeed an idiot and YANBU (apart from the 'twat' comment).

Surely it was self-defence? A stranger was trying to force his way into your home, and your quite entitled to stop him to protect yourself.

I'd of done more than trap his foot in the door if he had tried that at my house , you were definitely not being unreasonable - he was trying to intimidate you in your own home .
Better still I'd find out the name of whoever is in charge of him & let them know what he did .
