If you drink beer you can still be a lady...

watching some crap day time TV and a man (on a dating show) said he likes a girly girl who drinks wine, he would go for that type over a girl who drinks a half a pint because they are lady like.
I like the taste of beer and can't stand the taste of most types of wine, but still like to think I act lady like.
I also know ladies who drink wine and are not lady like.

Apologies pointy it just sounded like they approved specificaly of a woman drinking pints which made it sound like there was an unspoken agreement as to the type of woman who drinks next pints vs the type of woman who drinks pink cocktails through a sparkly strawand a bit of scorn on women who dont drink pints. Thats how I see it plus people falling over themselves to assert the pint drinking credentials.

Lots of people drink pints and cocktails Stealth.

oh yes, i also drink white wine and cocktails and gin and tonic and jack daniels and port and baileys...I'm an equal opportunities lush.

:o

No-one has ever given me a sparkly straw.

Have to say I started to drink pints due to sheer laziness in pubs. I take ages to drink a pint of bitter and going to the bar all the time while on halves bored me rigid so I started buying pints.
Actually I'll drink anything apart from whiskey. But that's due to a bad experience alcohol poisoning in a land far far away. The smell is lovely but the taste still makes me feel sick 20 years later...

One in the post pointy, along with one shaped like a penis that I found in the back of a drawer

I don't drink much or very often, but if I'm drinking a beer/ale etc, I drink a pint not a half! what's the point in a half if you will have a second glass ? you end up paying more and have to wait at the bar twice! Grin

Bloody hell, when I was a student we drank pints of wine!!

What do non pint drinkers drink when they go to a gig or the cricket or something where pints are served by default???

I drink whatever I want (and I'm a total lush, so there's little I don't drink!!). I don't think I've ever paid any thought to how ladylike I might look, I'm usually far too busy having fun!! But I don't think I've ever really had comments either way when I've had pints, I tend to get them more because I know how to order a drink well, and know my drinks well!

I hate wine and love a nice pint of Heineken mmmmmmm

One of my my fave memories of my grandad is when I was seventeen and we went out for a meal. When he asked what everyone would like I piped up "a pint of Stella please grandad!". My mum then slapped me round the back of the head and hissed "you can have a half pint!"

Grandad then said to my mum in his broad Yorkshire accent "eeeeeeee let the lass have a pint!" :-)

I do drink less than most of my male friends okay the taller heavier ones when we're out in a bar. It just means I skip a round. Halves are fine if they are half the price (which they are in some places now) but if I'm going to put back two pints of one specific ale, I'd rather not pay a half pint 'lady premium'.

I also drink champagne, prosecco, cocktails etc. DP has an exceptionally sweet tooth, so often his choice of cocktails will be on the pink side, where I'm more likely to order a dry martini or a sazerac or something. I assure you this is not to be macho on my part (I can take or leave chocolate but love savoury food) but we have had arsehole barmen in the past & the whole swapping glasses thing another poster mentioned.

Eating and drinking out is just full of sexist assumptions, although it's improving a lot (certainly in cities). I could rant a fair bit about meals in Italy...

Last time I was out with my old friends from uni in a CAMRA pub drinking dark ale, I was in a coat dress, with lots of jewellery, glittery nails and a bright pink handbag. I must've really confused the buggers. (Actually no-one batted an eyelid, but we were in the city centre).

I think hope this remains mostly a small town / LM class / shine your front step type of thing.

To answer the OP, it's a hell of a lot more ladylike (if that's your aspiration) to drink three pints of dark ale and go home than drink a ton of pink shite and vom all over the street. Although I'd rather make it gender neutral and suggest that a good replacement for ladylike is 'civilised' in the above sentence (certainly if it's a regular thing - I recognise lots of otherwise sensible people can get pissed and make an arse out of themselves occasionally).
