I do see on here jokes about how miserable she is and how they saw a post on FB about her many expressions and they were all the same miserable face.

I don't think people realise what they doing by laughing along. If you've ever been told "smile it might never happen" when walking in the street minding your own business you'll know how infuriating this comment is.

Men find the time to get in my face and tell me this bullshit out of some misguided notion that the world must see me smile.

Women have an obligation to look and act a certain way and when they don’t they get ridiculed. The media and society have led us all to believe that women must be happy. Women should present a happy face to the world.

KS goes against that. It's not an obligation to smile and I love the fact that she did not feel the need to conform.

If you think she's a bad actress then fine you can have opinion (I differ from that opinion but I have seen her in more than just Twilight) but I don't think she should be judge for conforming to how society expects a woman to behave.

It's really shit and a feminist issue in my opinion too.

Just like what they say about Victoria Beckham, or the way they always write 'jolly' about dawn French

Just shorthand for lazy, mysognistic stereotyping.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/01/2014 16:59

The explanation I heard is that we think we own her. I agree, don't smile just because that's what all the other clones do.

Also, when she slept with her director the fact that he is older, effectively her boss and he is married not her, is not the focus of the bile.

RandyRudolf · 25/01/2014 16:59

YANBU I hate it when people tell me to smile. They know knowing of what is going on in my life.

But, I must admit to slagging off Victoria Beckham. I think her pout irritates me.

usuallyright · 25/01/2014 17:00

Yanbu.
Do men get this?
No.
They're mean moody and sexy.
I respect her for not feeling obliged to give fake plastic grin everywhere she goes.

EdithWeston · 25/01/2014 17:00

I searched MN for 'Kirsten Stewart' and in there are only 89 threads since MN began, and only 2 or 3 of them are discussing how much she smiled.

So YABU to think this is a MN issue. But YANBU to find FB posts vacuous and stereoptypical.

gordyslovesheep · 25/01/2014 17:02

yes it's the global version of 'cheer up love' YANBU

Justholdthesmile · 25/01/2014 17:05

Ok ...... sorry AIBU police.

I've seen it mentioned on here before and seen her compared to Jennifer Lawrence too. I read an article and wanted to share my thoughts.

People are free as hell to disagree with me but it doesn't sound like you are agreeing or disagreeing. You are just going to the trouble (for whatever reason Confused) of searching threads and suggesting you have read all 89 of them so know exactly what was discussed in each thread as a reason that I should not have been allowed to post this.

She's not very good at acting happy though is she. I have no idea if she's miserable in rl or not.

Justholdthesmile · 25/01/2014 17:15

She's not very good at acting happy though is she

What films have you seen her in ashtrayheart

I think Twilight gives a bad impression because of its storyline - controlling boyfriend etc

But I have seen many of her other films - independent indie ones that I think are really good films.

She has also continually been in the top ten of the highest paid actresses.

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 25/01/2014 17:17

YANBU.
She has a severe case of Glum Resting Face.

But sh'es an actor, and isn't obliged to pull any particular kind of face when she's not acting.

BoneyBackJefferson · 25/01/2014 17:26

Which films are you recommending that will put her in a superior acting light?

But as a thought, just because actors and actresses rate the money it doesn't meant that everyone has to think that they are good.

and FYI twilight gives a bad impression because it is unmitigated shite. (Just IMO)

Whiskwarrior · 25/01/2014 17:28

Anyone else think the OP actually IS Kristen Stewart???

ashtrayheart · 25/01/2014 17:31

I've seen a few of her other films according to imdb, I didn't realise she was the young girl in 'panic room'!

EdithWeston · 25/01/2014 17:35

No, Justholdthesmile I'm not AIBU police. I was simply wondering if there had been some sort of big thing about her that I'd missed. And found there wasn't.

And I do think it's BU to stereotype the MN community when there is no evidence. And my impression is that that's been happening a lot recently

FloweryFeatureWall · 25/01/2014 17:39

This thread is major déjà vu of one a while back. The only threads I have seen about KS since joining MN a year ago are this one and its carbon copy.

mrsjay · 25/01/2014 17:40

I didn't realise she was the young girl in 'panic room'!

is she did not know that .

when she is on the red carpet she looks pissed off and looks like she cant be bothered to be there she also talks about her work as if it is breaking down barriers or something she was in a teen movie she gets on my nerves, when you are in a public facing job man or woman you grin you wave and then you go home, apart from that i dont care if she smiles or not

BoneyBackJefferson · 25/01/2014 18:02

I was thinking about going to watch her new film, till I saw her talk about it on a entertainment channel.

I don't care that she doesn't smile, but she mumbled through some explanation and didn't seem that bothered about the content of her film.

Frankly if she is that lackluster about it it seems pointless seeing it.

mrsjay · 25/01/2014 18:04

well exactly boney if she cant be bothered to talk about her new film properly then she isn't doing her job properly imo,

Justholdthesmile · 25/01/2014 18:05

when you are in a public facing job man or woman you grin you wave and then you go home

Why should you grin and wave?

OP posts:
BecauseIsaidS0 · 25/01/2014 18:05

I think she just has Bitchy Resting Face Syndrome.

Justholdthesmile · 25/01/2014 18:06

Anyone else think the OP actually IS Kristen Stewart???

If I was I wouldn't be on MN on a Saturday night - counting down the days until payday so I can regain having a life again.

OP posts:
EdithWeston · 25/01/2014 18:07

I think she looks French.

Which is rare in an Englishwoman.

Mumraathenoisylion · 25/01/2014 18:08

YANBU - I like to call her 'homewrecker'

You do raise a very good point about Women having to present a happy face to the world though. Something I'd not thought about before..I will have a ponder on that.

Although people often comment on the fact Andy Murray looks miserable.

BoneyBackJefferson · 25/01/2014 18:09

Justholdthesmile
"Why should you grin and wave?"

Because its the public's perception of them that puts bums on seats.
