We are on a meter and pay 6 monthly. Our bills tend to be in the region of £200 to £250 six monthly. This sounds really expensive. We are a family of 5 btw.
Just wondered what others pay and how many people are in the household.
Thank you

£30 per month family of 6 on a water meter. We were very worried when we went over to a meter that our bills were going to go up massively but for us it had the opposite effect and we are paying less now we are on a meter.

It varies hugely depending on where you live. It's a huge bug bear of mine. People don't seem to realise what a huge disparity there is across the UK. You can't compare it like other utilities.

fifi669 · 25/01/2014 11:39

SWW wanted £110pm for me and DS. Swapped to a meter and now it's around £75 per quarter.

cariadmawr · 25/01/2014 11:41

Welsh water family 3 adults 1 child no meter £475 for year .

ComposHat · 25/01/2014 12:22

The cost per litre seems to vary a fair bit from region to region. United Utilities in the North West are a right bunch of money grubbing shysters with hands down the worst ccustomer service anywhere.

Unfortunately as these companies operate as monopolies you can't switch suppliers.

ComposHat · 25/01/2014 12:32

Fifi that is because the unmetered charge is based on the rateable value of the property not the number of people in it. So for someone like my gran living alone in a three bedroom house it makes sense.

I think as a rough rule of thumb is you have more bedrooms than people a meter is usually cheaper.

BumpNGrind · 25/01/2014 13:12

£21 a month, 4 bed house, water meter.

JennyCalendar · 25/01/2014 13:13

2 adults + toddler in a 2 bed house with AnglianWater and no meter = £50

Just had a look at AW and think we would be classed as low water users, so would save £20 pm with a meter!

Thanks for this thread - going to make the switch (you can switch back to unmetered within 2 years if you aren't happy with the charges).

fifi669 · 25/01/2014 14:16

compos it's still only for a small 2 bed house! The wait for them to change me over, around 3 months, was the same as metered water for a year!

specialsubject · 25/01/2014 14:19

Thames Water are very expensive on rateable value, because they want you to have meters. Guess what will happen when everybody does?

water companies charge vastly different amounts per unit (cubic metre). Thames charge twice what Severn Trent do (i know because I moved between the two). There's no choice of supplier of course.

to read the meter, lift the cover over it.

ComposHat · 25/01/2014 14:30

Depends where you live I guess! A two bed in Kensington will have a far higher rateable value than a two bed in Middlesbrough.

BumpNGrind · 25/01/2014 17:15

Not necessarily, Kensington pays far lower council tax than my area in the South Wales Valleys for example. Unless you only have special posh water pumped into your Kensington house?

wobblyweebles · 25/01/2014 17:26

Wow!

I am in the US and pay about £10 a month.

HesterShaw · 25/01/2014 17:32

The disparity in water rates across the country is unjust and outrageous. We pay about £560 per year for two of us, both adults. About three loads of washing a week, no garden, showers only. This is the SW unsurprisingly.

RalphLaurenLover · 25/01/2014 17:34

£11.90 a month for me and my DC :)

DramaAlpaca · 25/01/2014 17:37

Nothing at all!

No water rates in Ireland, though they are to be introduced next year.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 25/01/2014 17:40

With Severn Trent on a meter, it's £23 per month, though as we are tight the loo rarely gets flushed, we only shower (including 2 year old DS), and our clothes are washed on the quick setting. I promise we don't smell!

TheBuskersDog · 25/01/2014 19:26

When we moved into our house seven years ago I was really worried because it had a meter already installed, at the time we had to do loads of washing due to our disabled son getting through several changes of clothes and bedding a day. We were really careful about not wasting any water, no need to have worried as when our first bill came it was substantially less than at our previous smaller house.

We never really need to worry about water usage, even when our water obsessed son has flushed the loo a hundred times a day or constantly ran taps our bill has never been more than about £140 for six months, I expect our next one to be a bit lower as he has moved to supported living leaving just three of us here.

We are on Thames Water and pay less than my mum in Yorkshire who is on a meter and lives on her own. We also paid less than her when we were not on a meter.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 25/01/2014 20:50

Thames water NOT metered and septic tank 240 per 6 months for 3 of us. Seems a lot when I see everybody else's.

not2nitedarling · 25/01/2014 22:27

chazma · 11/06/2014 21:03

so angry 410 over 10 months one person first floor flat

Hissy · 11/06/2014 21:06

Somehow we ended up with £175 in credit last year, so have just had our payments reduced to £4 a month!

Was £30/m before then.

Hissy · 11/06/2014 21:08

One adult, 1 8yo soapdodger ds. I have changed the way I shower, switching water off while I lather, and only wash clothes at weekend, but still, it was a welcome surprise!

CantEvenKeepAnOrchidAlive · 11/06/2014 21:09

Family of 3, one being a 3 year old, in a 2 bed flat, non-metered (not allowed a meter).

£67.20 per month. Works out at nearly £810 a year.

South West Water, of course.

CatThiefKeith · 11/06/2014 21:14

14 per month by direct debit
