We are on a meter and pay 6 monthly. Our bills tend to be in the region of £200 to £250 six monthly. This sounds really expensive. We are a family of 5 btw.
Just wondered what others pay and how many people are in the household.
Thank you

Oh and we're Thames Water.

Watto1 · 24/01/2014 13:29

Our last bill was 180 for 6 months (water meter). 2 adults, 2 young dc. Dishwasher on daily, washing machine on 3 or 4 times a week. Welsh Water.

Norudeshitrequired · 24/01/2014 13:31

Can I just say that if anybody has 3 or more children or a household member who has certain medical conditions and gets a qualifying benefit (including tax credits) then you can apply to join the water sure scheme which will cap your hill at the average household bill. If you use less water than the capped amount then your bill will be else than the cap. Win win for families who are eligible to join the scheme.
Minot sure if all water companies offer the scheme, but it's worth checking.

£53 a month for 10 months a year. Unmetered 3 bed semi. It would probably be worth us going on a meter.

FracturedViewOfLife · 24/01/2014 13:31

It went up recently to £23 a month. There are only two of us though.

FracturedViewOfLife · 24/01/2014 13:32

Oh and I am in the East Midlands.

purplebaubles · 24/01/2014 13:33

£40 a month. Metered. 2 adults and a child.

We don't have baths, only 1 shower a day each and washing machine is only on 3 times a week.

I can only conclude that United Utilities (North West) is bloody expensive!

gordyslovesheep · 24/01/2014 13:35

3 bed - new build, 3 kids 1 adult - I pay £27 a month - on a meter - I am usually in credit

gordyslovesheep · 24/01/2014 13:37

Oh the kids have a bath every night (4 nights that they are here) I then have a separate bath or show every day and I do a minimum of 1 load of washing a day - also hand wash all dishes

CuttedUpPear · 24/01/2014 13:38

£110 per year.
We are apparently off the mains though you wouldn't know it.

GinOnTwoWheels · 24/01/2014 13:39

Ours is about £350 per year, but that's only 2 people in a 2 bed house in Yorkshire (unmetered).

I must check how many payments we make, because they haven't taken any money since 1/12/13 and in the past we have made 10 monthly payments per year (April to January).

We get a small discount because we have shared pipes so can't have a meter. Apparently, it would be quite a lot less if we were on a meter as we are paying above YWs average charge, despite having a below average house.

Moneysavingexpert says that if you have the same number of people or fewer than bedrooms, it is likely that you would save on a meter, but they probably don't account for all those people on here that wash their sheets and towels everyday Grin.

yorkie11 · 24/01/2014 13:41

Not yorkshire anymore. Noe anglian water. Interesting average is £410 so I gess it isn't ott.

We now have more people than bedrooms but no choice re meter as newbuild.

Anatana · 24/01/2014 13:46

£30 a month with United Utilities. Two people, no meter.

wellthatsdoneit · 24/01/2014 13:47

430 for the year. 1 adult, 2 children. Not metered - think I might be better off moving to a meter. The lady from the water company said that they don't recommend a meter to anyone who has a dishwasher (which must be, er, everyone), but now I think about it I don't use the dishwasher every day anyway.

Clearlymisunderstood · 24/01/2014 13:47

Family of 3 not metered, pay £460 per year

toni74 · 24/01/2014 13:49

We are a family of 3 and pay 49 a month.

Can I just hijack and ask how do you read the meter???

We had one installed over the summer and nobody has shown us how we read it!!

GinOnTwoWheels · 24/01/2014 13:54

wellthatsdoneit that dishwasher advice is bonkers IMHO. According to Which? a dishwasher uses between 7 and 21 litres of water per cycle.

I would be surprised it 7 litres would fill a single washing up bowl, and you would need more than one bowl to wash up a dishwasher's worth of pots.

Our water company has a calculator on its website that helps you calculate whether or not you would be better off on a meter, by asking questions about how many loads of washing/showers/baths etc etc that you use. Perhaps yours does too.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 24/01/2014 14:23

A compulsory meter in a large new build. Dishwasher, washing machine, 3 bathrooms and a downstairs loo, an OH who loves cleaning the car but we never really water the lawn.
Just two people most of the time and we shower rather than bath, but we do shower a lot.

Our bills come twice a year and vary between about £92 and £110, but that's fresh water in only. We have private drainage and pay to service and maintain the plant plus pay to empty the tank every couple of years or so. It's a Bio Tech treatment plant which does discharge some water rather than keeping everything in, but still needs to be emptied from time to time.

bellablot · 24/01/2014 14:25

£44 per month direct debit. Sometimes get a £50 bill after 6 months. Confused

bellablot · 24/01/2014 14:26

Forgot to add family of 5.

SantasSprouts · 24/01/2014 15:07

We pay £23 a month for family of four on a meter. In an end of terrace 3 bed. Our bill has always seemed cheaper than friends.

wellthatsdoneit · 24/01/2014 15:32

Thanks ginontwowheels - I will check it out.

IneedAsockamnesty · 24/01/2014 15:41

That's pretty much the average water use for a normal household.

How you know what he average yearly use is will be down to the water sure yearly figure currently just over £400 as that's set at average figures.

IneedAsockamnesty · 24/01/2014 15:43
