Ok I know it's not unreasonable I was just trying to fit it in the titled section that I have done!!

When shall I dress my 7 week old in proper day clothes?

DD1 til 9mo when she went to CMs and I felt I should look like I made an effort.

DD2 will probably be the same. She's refluxy and weaning so there is a LOT of sick, she would get mega pissed off if I kept putting dresses over her head. Plus it would cost a fortune - babygros are cheap and mostly handed down from DD1. She sometimes wears a jumper dress and tights combo for going out, but we don't go out much due to all the vomit.

People can judge us all they like, they're not living our lives.

I'm not a fan of 3wo boys in uncomfortable looking jeans and trainers, or headbands on bald little girls, but each to their own.

I love baby gro's too. Ds is 7 months and still rocks the colourful or stripy sort. I love the baby blue and cream newborn ones but have stopped dressing him in these during the daytime. Soft, footed, cotton dungarees (the rarest of beasts), I adore but can't seem to find anywhere. apart from the gorgeous but way off budget, petit bateau . Any suggestions?

DD is 4 months. She is in baby gros most of the time, but will have more outfits when in nursery from 6.5 months. She is much more comfortable in the baby gros. I didn't even realise it wasn't the 'done thing' until an nct lady made a face when I mentioned I only changed her once a day if she wasn't soiled. Cow. I've saved a fortune in laundry. Babies grow up so quickly. What's the major rush?

Blue,

Don't use nice stuff for nursery you will regret it.

I keep mine in babygros until they walk then its either footless babygros or short rompers dependant on season. The babygros and footless rompers are teamed with hand knitted cardi's at about 18 ish months I switch to very loud leggings like these www.amazon.co.uk/Baby-Toddler-Unisex-Trousers-Leggings/dp/B0050UB1DK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_22?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 with pictures on the bums with either long sleeved or short sleeved tshirts. And knitted jumpers if needed. And they stay in that sort of thing until about 3

I also hold off on shoes until they are able to walk propally outside before then they have foot coverings purely intended for warmth.

And I dont much care if anybody thinks they are in nightwear because I know they are not and I think they look lovely.

my 14th month old still wears them if its cold or we are not going out they are so comfy even adults are in onsies now....

i dont like tight things across waist or the pulling and tugging that goes with dressing small babies...easier all round and with the sick and so on, poo expolsions to keep clothes easy to take on and off....

My son (11months) still wears babygros at home during the day. I change his outfit daily though so sometimes it's pyjamas (with socks if it's cold). I'll put him in an outfit if we're going out but it has to be comfortable. Each to their own.

About 9 months for DD and DS - Although both were smaller and in 3 - 6 months still. My ten week old doesn't wear proper outfits much at all. I think he's only wore two. I haven't bought him any at all either. Babygrows are nice and practical.

I only out him into proper clothes once he could walk. When they are crawling they either crawl up inside their dresses (girls or Victorian boys) or crawl their trousers off and leave them in their wake.

Around 6/7 months with mine and even then I moved them into really simple things like soft pants and top.

Only a few weeks but I mainly only dress DS in softer clothes like jersey dungarees and crawlers with a top. I don't like him in jeans and more 'grown up' clothes. He's 4 months now.

My nine month old occasionally wears them in the day still, he has plain boring cheap ones for sleeping in, and a couple of nicer ones for day wear. They are smug and comfortable for him, and look nice with a little cardigan on IMO. I think with ds1 I put babygros on him in daytime until he could crawl as the he needed something thicker on his knees (it was winter).

I guess around 4-6 months. My second was born in march so by the time she was 3 months the weather was warm and she was wearing little vests or short rompers dc3 is also due in march so I imagine will be similar if we have a decent summer.

I can't really remember, but it was longer for my second anyway - she was in footless babygros until about a year old. I would team them with some knitwear; I always thought she looked the business, and more importantly she was comfortable.

DS2 still wears them most days at 9m and commandoing around like he's in the SAS. He wears dungaree outfits for social occasions, which there's not many of, he's in baby grows for house days and general routine, like swimming and buggyfit.

He has a long body sotrousers gape at the waist, and dungarees pull up into his nappy causing more leaks. In a babygrow, he stays covered up from neck to toes which is useful in mid winter. DS1 was smaller, so the current outfits look a bit old, and its odd seeing my baldy crawler in clothes that DS1 was toddling around in until 20m. The wardrobe has been updated a little... with fleecy and velour babygrows.

I think "sleepsuit"is a branding conspiracy to guilt mums into buying outfits at tripple the price.

DS1 has just changed to pajamas, so shortly before his 3rd birthday. M&S sold age 2-3 online. I had to buy some for pajama day for Children in Need as babygrows weren't practical for nursety. I miss them. He looked like a padwan jedi in them!

I can't remember exactly but DS was in baby gros most of the time until he was around 7/8 months I think - possibly older.
I have memories of putting him the outfits people gave him for a photo to include in thank you notes and him never wearing them again.
I then swapped to dungarees!

DS1 - was enamoured with "proper clothes"

DS2 - realised the error of my ways and kept him in babygros until he could walk - also, since it was a hot summer, he'd just wear a vest when out. I also used to cut the feet off the babygros when they got a bit small to make them last longer.

NewtRipley · 24/01/2014 08:20

I think proper clothes are just a ploy to get us to spend money.

Nice for special occasions, but I think, nicer to remember they are babies

MissBetseyTrotwood · 24/01/2014 08:21

Many parents dropping off at DS' school in the mornings are still wearing them at pick up time so I'd say your baby has a while yet. Wink

My dd wore a babygro onesie all weekend last weekend. It's snug and cosy, she has two and she's nearly 16.

Another lazy trick: I used to put my babies in those long white nightdresses at night for the first three months. Makes night time changes even easier than babygros, if that's possible.

I'm not sure they still make them, but back in the day etc even our local hospital used them for ease and convenience.

As long as possible, I loved them wearing babygrows. It's the cutest thing they can wear - better then my neighbour who put her young baby in a red leather (probably Plastic) leather jacket.
