AIBU?

How long do/did you dress your baby in baby gros during the day before it became unreasonable?

Ok I know it's not unreasonable I was just trying to fit it in the titled section that I have done!!

When shall I dress my 7 week old in proper day clothes?

All of my four had proper outfits during the day from the moment they came out of hospital. That was my choice and the girls had lots of dresses and pretty little knickers that went over their nappies.

Now I want a newborn! Definitely missing having a little baby to fill the boredom of housework!

I don't think my ds was out of baby gro's and rompers until about 3 months. Even now, he wears a long sleved cotton top and cotton leggins, which is basically pyjamas! He really hates 'stiff' trousers.

I had a six month cut off. I needed to change him after breakfast anyway once on solids. Then back into baby grow after dinner and bath.

Mine were in babygros most of the time until summer, when it got too hot - outfits were for special occasions. Babygros are comfortable, practical and cheap - what's not to like? And babies do not need to be 'dressed', they need to be kept warm and comfy. Nothing else matters - they are not dolls for display.

Babygros are comfortable and I can't see any benefit to a very young baby in wearing "outfits".

Well I said ds would be in babygros until he was 12 months old.

However he hates getting dressed and undressed and I'm finding the poppers a faff while he is wiggling around.

So in the day he has soft cords or jogging bottoms on with a vest and a long sleeved top. At night he has babygros on.

Don't think it matters really. As long as the baby is comfortable!

tops/dresses and leggings/tights here. the poppers do my head in on baby grows. much easier with soft separates.

I always thought of them as jammies so never dressed her in them during the day... It appears I'm in the minority.

Babygro's until about 9 months for my DC, changed as they started to cruise around. More grown up outfits are uncomfortable when lying down in them, waistbands can irritate. Babygro and a cardigan is lovely.

Ironically with the onesie craze my dad's are now back in essentially a babygro for bed time!

This is THE issue that I had absolutely no awareness of until I joined Mn, the Properly Dressed vs Babygro debate. It is a completely mad and insanely prissily judgemental one. Personally, because I didn't know this was a Thing, I have no idea. Looking at photographs, he was probably mostly in babygros for months, but certainly not exclusively. He also wore soft jersey trousers and dungarees a lot.

DS is nearly 5 months and wore an outfit for the first time last week - it was some little dungarees and t-shirt that a friend bought him for Christmas. I put him in white or pastel baby grows at night and colourful/dark blue ones during the day. He has a few individual footless baby grows (are they called romper suits?!) which are very obviously daytime ones. One for example has a collar on it, like a polo shirt. He also has some dungarees with feet and coordinating long sleeved vests that are in baby grow material - these are a nice compromise too as they still look babyish IYSWIM.

I've got quite a few outfits in age 6-9 months as they were bought for him as presents but I imagine I will keep him in baby grows or footless baby grows on a day to day basis and keep the outfits for weekends etc. I find the outfits can look a bit too grown up but they were bought as presents so he will certainly be wearing them.

Baby grows are so much more practical I'm too bloody lazy to have to wash proper outfits when he has dribbled milk on them within five minutes of wearing them!

DS1 wore proper clothes out of the hospital, ds2 was in babygros and soft clothes for longer.

If we have dc3 I would do babygros for a lot longer they're much easier and look so much nicer for babies. I look at photos now of ds1 in jeans as a small baby and think WHY!

Dd still wears them at home to be comfy. She wears outfits to go out. She's almost 2.

Leave it me too. Mine is two and a bit how and doesn't fit into 18/24 but if I could I would still be doing it at home. To go out in I reckon once they are walking around it's like wearing a onesie and I wouldn't wear a onesie to go shopping in or out for a nice lunch but I probably would to go round to a friends for a lazy play date.

I couldn't be bothered with cute outfits. I have a loads of nice hand me downs that I used but I exchanged most outfits with gift reciepts for packs of babygrows as cheaper.

my NCT Friends all used to buy expenseive outfits from john lewis or mothercare and dress tiny babies in jeans and shorts or chintzy dresses.

No thanks

PFB dolly less than a month. Wore his first outfit on day seven. After that, soft leggings over poppered vest with optional cardigan (summer baby) for a few months.

DC2, no time for dressing up. Lasted far longer. Two or three months probably mainly in babygros but sometimes soft outfits, and romper suits that hot summer (when he was 2-5mo).

DC3, in sizes 0-1m and 0-3m where I had lots of babygros. Once into 3-6m I only had a few - can't work out if they were not worn, or just ruined by nappy trials. So from that point on it's been simple soft outfits - mainly dungarees so won't ride up/down. But fatty poor child was in 3-6m at about six weeks, so yeah, six weeks.

Babygros are plenty though. Rompers if hot. I am never buying actual clothes for a baby for a gift ever again. We were given so many mini-adult clothes that are just hugely impractical.

And I'm that mother that has a total ban on blue denim. None of my children has ever worn blue denim yet, and the eldest is nearly six Blush My intention is to carry on with this policy until they actually choose it for themselves. If you can't wear bright orange chinos at two and a half, when can you?

uh, aren't onsies just big babygros??

Mine wore babygros or rompers for probably the first three months, then soft dungarees type outfits after that. Never any jeans/top type combos until they were nearer 9 months, simply because I didn't feel they'd be very comfy for a young baby, but dungarees and long sleeved tops looked lovely and were comfy for them too.

I always did white babygros for night time and brighter coloured or stripey ones for daytime when they were little.

Personally I wouldn't dress an older baby in a babygro during the day once past six months, but then I wouldn't dress a tiny one in mini jeans and polo shirt either! All personal preference but at the end of the day as long as a child is clean warm and comfortable it really doesn't matter.

I still put mine (23 months) in babygrows after the bath and for bed...

but her first proper outfit was when she was 6 weeks (ish) for mother's day... but still, mostly baby grows and rompers until a few months on...

I never do past the first day or so. Sleepsuits are for sleeping in AFAIC. They just look scruffy when worn as daywear (to me)

Much preferred little leggings and t-shirts for my girls.

Report
TinyTear · 23/01/2014 09:56

dietcoke I also have the plain white ones for bed.

marks the difference... I will get her normal pyjamas when she goes into a bed from the cot, but for now we still do the white ones for bed... (helps she is 23 months but in 12-18 clothes so easier to find the plain ones)

Horatia what on earth is wrong with blue denim? DS3 is nearly one and has some absolutely gorgeous dark blue denim dungarees...they are fab and comfy and don't show the dirt!

Mind you, I am that mother who refuses to allow her children to wear jogging bottoms. I gritted my teeth and bought a few pairs for potty training but as soon as they got the hang of it it was back in proper trousers!

What CatLady said!

I used a sling all the time with DS2, so a babygrow that didn't ride up made much more sense.
