to ask what you think about nose piercing?

Just wondering, really. I've always considered getting one done (nostril, not a septum piercing) and thought it would suit my face. But it's never seemed like the right time, and now I'm in my mid 30's.

I've been split from my ex for a few months, kind of need a pick-me-up and have come back to the idea. Would it be a really naff thing to do? Also, (stupid questions, maybe) when it heals is it uncomfortable?

Yes yes yes.....I had mine done with I was 18 and again at 20, loved it each time but ended up with this little luid filled bubble beside it...so let it close up. You would never know I had it pierced.

I'm 29 now and intend on trying it one more time.....Any experts out there, could you tell me if I'm likely to get that little bubble again? Sorry for hijacking op.

DayAfterYesterday · 22/01/2014 20:48

Go for it! id like mine done but dont think i have the confidence to pull it off, i always think women with nose piercings especially the rings look really confident, outgoing and rather hot tbh!

ThatBloodyWoman · 22/01/2014 20:49

Apparently the bubble is very common Ditsy.
I had it.
All I can say is go to a good place, using needles, and have a solid titanium stud.

Bathe with salt water - no savlon or similar.

And then it's just a case of persevering.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/01/2014 20:51

Ooooh I like them but many years ago I was adviced (by a very pierced male hairdresser) not to have it done "because if you take it out, it looks like a blackhead".

Sad I didn't have it done.

BohemianGirl · 22/01/2014 20:52

if you must get one do so

People will judge I do

Frankly you could be the love child of Sheldon and Carol Vorderman and if you needed to punch little holes in your head as some form of 'pick me up' I'd never employ you - yes I judge - so do most other employers but I think it should be tick box on job seekers and other welfare

hiddenhome · 22/01/2014 20:52

Envy of all these people who are having piercings and tattoos. I'm 44 and feel as though I shouldn't be wanting to do stuff like this.

I wish I was young again Grin

DitsyDonkey · 22/01/2014 20:52

ThatBloodyWoman, thanks for the advice.....looking forward to getting it fine again!

TonksLupin · 22/01/2014 20:54

Sorry if this is x-post! When I had a straight stud it fell out all of the time, with the screw back, it's never fallen out. It cost about £20.

sublimecorpse · 22/01/2014 20:55

Go for it! I have one and I love it Smile

Had it done when I was about 20 with a gun - it was horrendous and never healed properly so I took it out.

BUT

Had it redone at 31 with a needle and it was perfect! Healed up beautifully this time.
When you initially have it done it will be a steel ball with a curly post - I now use nose wires and bend them once they're in. You can't see or feel them and I do forget it's there.

I wear a small flat sparkly stud - stay away from pink/red/purple, they can look like spots. Stick to diamanté ones.you'll love it!

Oh and when I take mine out the hole is barely visible

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 22/01/2014 20:56

Hiddn, if you want something, have something! Grin

My auntie is mid fifties and just had her first tattoo and piercing!!

FightingOverImaginaryIcecream · 22/01/2014 20:56

I've had mine over 20 years now, got it done with a gun as a foolish teenager and the back was put on too tight, my nose swelled, the stud back would not move, it was hideous agony. I did regret it for a few moments while I was attempting to extract the back of the stud from my swollen flesh with tweezers, but then got a proper nose stud (with no back) and haven't looked back since.

I've worn a ring for most of the last decade (used to have a job where only studs were allowed before that or I'd always have had one). I guess one day I might be too old for it, but I don't feel that way yet!

DownstairsMixUp · 22/01/2014 21:00

Hmm Luckily most other employers I have come across are not judgy pants and tbh I wouldn't want to work for someone that judged by appearance anyway, seems a bit of a nobhead way to employ people. (Btw I have a few piercings, sleeve and legs tattooed and I've been employed in care, retail, waitressing and admin, I always get people commenting on how nice they look and how well they are done nowadays)

A nose piercing won't effect you. Plus you can always wear a retainer in work/interviews etc if you don't want it to heal up (clear studs so you can't see them)

wetaugust · 22/01/2014 21:07

You wouldn't even know if your employer was judgey or not Downstairs

I hate the things and I detest having to look at them all day stuck on someone's face.

But I'd never tell you that in a work context. Oh no - that could lead to all sorts of legal problems. But privately I can judge.

DownstairsMixUp · 22/01/2014 21:09

Thank god for that then eh? Things on people's skin does not effect the way they work. Hmm Plus if I wanted to I could easily go to an interview with piercings out, tattoos covered as none are on face/neck etc and no one would ever know. But being honest has never prevented me getting work. Smile

FightingOverImaginaryIcecream · 22/01/2014 21:10

Interestingly people objected to piercings when I worked in a supermarket and minimum wage type jobs. I was able to wear my nose ring (and have my eyebrow pierced Grin) without comment, as soon as I started working in a degree level entry area. I would go with the more important your skills are, the less your appearance matters.

DownstairsMixUp · 22/01/2014 21:14

That's probably quite true, I work for a supermarket that allow it at the moment but I do know quite a few of them object to then, my Mum works for Waitrose and I know they don't allow piercings or anything like that, nor do Asda who my ex used to work for. Caring with them was nice, patient's used to love asking questions about them. (misses the wards now)

Good luck with the piercing OP though, i've heard nose ones hurt quite bad! Grin

Goldendandelion · 22/01/2014 21:17

I am 39 and over the last few years I have had my nose and tragus pierced and 3 tattoos. The best nose studs I have found are nose screws especially bio flex ones. They are plastic, so more comfortable and don't fall out.

wetaugust · 22/01/2014 21:18

In a degree level entry area everyone is going to be very aware of potential discrimmination issues if they even mentioned your piercings.

Don't think that makes them more acceptable.

They are an Emperor's New Clothes. They look vile.

I had an employee once who was determined to push boundaries. Came to work one day wearing an eyebrow ring. I had to look at that disgusting thing all day.

Eventually he left (hooray) for a job in the private sector. On the day of the interview he came into work in a perfectly pressed suit - minus the eyebrow ring.

Not that having an eye brow ring would have mattered at interview - would it? Grin

And it didn't go back in again after he had secured the private sector job (according to the people who kept in touch with him).

Fighting - I had completely the opposite experience. When I worked in retail I had a couple of facial piercings but had to take them out when I got into my chosen profession.
In certain careers, however well qualified you are, piercings just aren't acceptable.

I quite liked my nose piercing, though I'd never get it done again. Far too much hassle as it fell out all the time, whatever style stud I wore.
I also think it might have looked a bit "hippy-trying-to-be-cool." I was 23 or so when I took it out. Think I'd look a bit daft with one now.

DownstairsMixUp · 22/01/2014 21:22

Hmm Well it didn't for me? I know a lot of people with tattoos/piercings in "good" jobs to. My friend posted her interview outfit on FB, half sleeve on show, for a job as a sister in the hospital ward back where I am from. She got the job. Pretty sure they judged her on being a fantastic nurse with good references and positive feedback, not her skin. So no matter how many stories you have there will be lots of others to counter act that nowadays people aren't all overly judgy.

GrumpyInYorkshire · 22/01/2014 21:23

Oh, and it doesn't hurt. Clitoral piercings, however - THEY hurt. Wincing at the memory.

DownstairsMixUp · 22/01/2014 21:26

Ouch at clit piercing Grin

ThatBloodyWoman · 22/01/2014 21:28

(crosses legs)

My nose piercing hurt Grumpy.

I shall make a mental note not to opt for a clitoral piercing next!

DownstairsMixUp · 22/01/2014 21:30

I always wanted a nose ring thatbloodywoman but it just seems like it'd be so painful. Think I am done with piercings nowadays! I thought my belly piercing hurt quite bad. Blush
