. . . to think 'The Butler' is the best film ever to come out of Hollywood?

I've just seen 'The Butler' and it's absolutely wonderful.

Words can't do it justice so I won't try.

But do see it if you possibly can.

I watched it in the US and people clapped at the end. Now that's high praise!

Suelford · 21/01/2014 20:41

Ehh, it was OK.

MrsBW · 21/01/2014 20:42

Meh.

I was disappointed with it.

SorrelForbes · 21/01/2014 20:43

I enjoyed it but American Hustle is the best film this year so far for me

(I've seen lots of films in the US and clapping at the end is quite usual)

TalisaMaegyr · 21/01/2014 20:44

I loved it. Absolutely loved it.

McSmoke · 21/01/2014 20:58

Urgh yes the clapping and whooping is cringey IME.

Southeastdweller · 21/01/2014 21:00

Over indulgent rubbish. Oprah was crap but I liked the actor who played J.F.K.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2014 21:02

Sounds tedious as fuck, like all those big 'dramas'. A vehicle for those involved in it to congratulate themselves on what terrific people they are. Yawn.

lottie82 · 21/01/2014 21:17

I saw it, and I did really like it BUT some parts were a bit cheesy...

katese11 · 21/01/2014 21:18

I quite liked it, then found out that most of the "true story" was made up. Bit disappointing!

sparklyskyy · 21/01/2014 21:18

Gotta be the wolf of wall street! Everything I expected and more from Leo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese.

Still to watch The Butler, love Forrest Whitaker so looking forward to it but have heard the reviews aren't great.

The thing is as long as you enjoyed it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. I love a good film and it had been too long since I'd had the chance to watch one and the Wolf blew it out the park for me Grin

squoosh · 21/01/2014 21:28

The Butler is the best Hollywood film ever,...................EVER?

YABVU

(although I quite fancy Forest Whitaker)

CarlaVeloso · 21/01/2014 21:32

What's Margot Robbie like? I remember her from Neighbours.

Sad that for her to get her Hollywood breakthrough she has to get her clothes off, 'twas ever thus I suppose.

sparklyskyy · 21/01/2014 21:53

She was in neighbors?? I really liked her in it. I read the trivia on IMDB after watching it and seemingly she had to have 3 tequila shots in quick succession before her nude seen with Leo DiCaprio Grin.

The film is solely about greed, drugs, sex and debauchery so not for everyone (lots of swearing also!) And one particular scene was like wtf?! But hey ho I enjoyed it! Grin.

ihatethecold · 21/01/2014 21:55

I'm trying to decide what to see tomorrow.
Either 12 years a slave,
Hustle or wolf of wall st,,

I just can't decide

sparklyskyy · 21/01/2014 22:00

Wolf! Grin

Although think I'll be seeing 12 years tomorrow too.

ihatethecold · 21/01/2014 22:08

I am tempted by wolf but, it's 3 hours long!
I will fidget like a 3 year old after 2.

sparklyskyy · 21/01/2014 22:18

I thought that 3 hours was a bit much when I heard that but it went in quick! Never looked at my watch once! But it depends if you're ok with films full of sex and drugs. I would recommend to my sister and friends but not my dad Grin.

SorrelForbes · 22/01/2014 00:10

Wolf is excellent too.

ComposHat · 22/01/2014 00:47

I was very disappointed that 'The Butler' wasn't a biopic of Stan Butler from On the buses.

Best Hollywood film ever? Are you off your rocker?

Better than all of the following films:

Casablanca?
Some Like it Hot?
Rear Window?
The Graduate?
Chinatown?
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest?
Midnight Cowboy?
In the Heat of the Night?
The Godfather (1 & 2) ?
The Last Picture Show?

Either:

  1. You have appalling taste in film

  2. The only other film you have ever seen is The Hangover Part 3.

ComposHat · 22/01/2014 07:12

Yes the whooping and clapping at films is pretty standard in the US. They seem to treat cinema going as something akin to pantomime.

BunnyLebowski · 22/01/2014 07:48

YABU.

It's not even the best film to come out of Hollywood this year.

You need to watch more films.

LottieJenkins · 22/01/2014 07:54

I was very impressed with it but thought it went on slightly longer than necessary!

curiousgeorgie · 22/01/2014 08:01

I think The Wolf Of Wall Street is the best film to come out of this years awards crop...

It's a 3 hour film that feels about 45 minutes and Leonardo Di Caprio is amazing in it.

The Butler was good too, but definitely not the best film ever.

filimou · 22/01/2014 09:18

I kind of want to watch it so I can ogle Liev Schreiber.....
