I admire anyone who got through the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure back in the day.

That one was impossible. I mean, I think it was actually impossible, wasn't it?

SofaKing · 19/01/2014 18:45

Beeyump I look that much like your fiance?

Grin
TerrariaMum · 19/01/2014 18:46

brightnearly, of course it does.

Also, did all of you know that the in the first Simon, Simon is voiced by Chris Barrie otherwise known as Rimmer from Red Dwarf?

BigW · 19/01/2014 18:49

I love that plucky little pirate!!

'Those things don't go together' really Guybrush, REALLY? ?

RubberBullets · 19/01/2014 18:53

I play Kingdom of Loathing and it has insult beer pong as part of it. The game references lots of different pop culture items

LadySnapcase · 19/01/2014 18:57

I loved those games, but was rubbish at them! Didn't have the imagination to use the right stuff together...walkthroughs all the way! Also loved Day of the Tentacle. Wish I had time for them these days...

madhairday · 19/01/2014 19:10

Oh yes, I was obssesive about this, I can still replay the theme tune in my head. Grog anyone?

I also loved Kings Quest, in the early ones you had to type commands and had to hit the exact wording to make it work, which could be frustrating to say the least, I remember you had toget across some lily pads and I kept typing 'jump across the lily pads' or 'jump over the pads' etc etc and after about a thousand tries found it was 'jump from pad to pad' Hmm Loved it though.

BigW · 19/01/2014 19:18

OMG lady Day of the Tentacle! I haven't thought about that for years Grin

brightnearly · 19/01/2014 19:47

I can hold my breath for 10 minutes!

I hate fruit cocktail!

Use stiff monkey on tap.

lastnightIwenttoManderley · 19/01/2014 19:58

Eh? I'm nearly 30 and loved all the Monkey Island games....was I in the wrong age group? All about the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle if you ask me. DH downloaded it onto the Xbox for me :)

Personally I was an uber geek and loved transport tycoon as well as theme hospital, though I had strict layout criteria for the latter. Needless to say I work in construction now...

lookatmybutt · 19/01/2014 20:12

I thirdinate the Broken Sword games.

If you can get it to play - I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Blooming fab and the voice acting is really good. There are 3 slightly different pathways to take throughout the game that give different gameplay and locations. I recommend picking the one with the girl - the punching-everybody-one is surprisingly less fun.

Don't bother with the Last Crusade game - it's pants (like the film).

A lot of people also like Beneath a Steel Sky but I couldn't really get into it.

RubyrooUK · 19/01/2014 20:34

Have you all played the new five-part Tales of Monkey Island series that Telltale made a couple of years ago on iPhone/iPad etc?

There is also a Back to the Future series (think that is also five parts) that is worth playing on iPad....

juneybean · 19/01/2014 20:35

You can get monkey island on steam!

I played a game that no one has ever heard of, but maybe another MNer has!

Beasts & Bumpkins, absolutely hilarious stuff!

Love Theme Hospital, there is a freeware version at the minute called CorsixTH, more compatible with the newer windows.

I loved the original GTA as well, birds eye view.

lastnight there's a freeware version of Transport Tycoon too called OpenTTD

JennySense · 19/01/2014 20:43

Lol! I step away [to play this jayisgames.com/archives/2011/05/the_tiny_bang_story.php] thinking no-one would answer and I can't believe there are other fellow games nerds on MN ! It's like Threepwood is shorthand we all get!

I am going to love trying out some of the suggestions on the thread.
I too started out with Scott Adams text adventures [which you can download from his site] and have played Grim Fandango too [one of my faves].

Recently I've played Samorest [sp?], Machinarium and Botanicula as I really like Amanita Designs.

If I'm pushed I'll play some of the Lego series [the original Star Wars Trilogy is good fun]

Off to do some more downloading!

My name is Guybrush Threepwood and I want to be a pirate!

I'm selling these fine leather jackets!

Oh they were the days

CrohnicallySick · 19/01/2014 20:54

Look behind you! A three headed monkey!

Trills · 19/01/2014 20:56

The proper ones though, not the "3d" ones where we walked weirdly around the screen and it was hard to find things to click on.

JennySense · 19/01/2014 21:49

Grog all round, I'm busy downloading DOS emulators...

minniebar · 19/01/2014 22:03

Oh the Indiana Jones game!! Back in the day ex-boyfriend had a Mac - and this was when there weren't any games for Macs available (early 90s). Saw the Indy game in a shop - first game we'd seen. So we bought it.

For £50.

In the 90s!! When we were both working minimum wage!

I think we split up before I got to finish it Sad

Mellowandfruitful · 19/01/2014 22:07

I played one of the Monkey Islands on my then bf (now DH Smile)'s pc back in the day but can't remember which one. Had a bit in where you could put on a tofu mask, for no reason at all?

Beeyump · 19/01/2014 22:23

Oh, the 3D ones were just sad and frustrating. I remember going on and on to my mum, a devout Christian, about how much I LOVED Curse of Monkey Island, I LOVED it, and she got upset because I was 'setting it up as an idol'. Grin

Beeyump · 19/01/2014 22:24

Mellow, Guybrush whips on the tofu mask as a disguise to help him get near to the lactose intolerant volcano. He then throws cheese in to make it erupt.

brightnearly · 19/01/2014 22:34

El Pollo Diabolo!!!!!

brightnearly · 19/01/2014 22:36

I'm revelling in memories. After a lengthy play session, i would catch myself thinking "Use tap. Pick up soap. Use soap. Use towel. Pick up towel" etc...

Beeyump · 19/01/2014 22:41

The demon chicken!
