To have caused a fuss in library ??!

I had to pop to the local library this morning to print some important docs out, as we don't have a printer. They have 6 computers, and then about 12 in their computer training room, although there was a class going on so those ones could not be used.

The 6 were all taken up; some guy looked like he was searching a job site (good on him), some other guy was reading large documents, not sure about 2 others, but then there was a girl (about 24ish) and a lad (probably a little older) sat just scrolling through Facebook, and blatantly daydreaming! There was a queue for the computers and I know some locals who do visit every day to carry out job searches etc.

Anyway, I couldn't help myself, and asked the guy on the desk why it was right for people to have to wait for a computer, for productive purposes, while people are sat wasting their lives on Social Networking, when maybe they should be taking a leaf out of the other guys' book and searching the job sites?

It really gets my back up as I'm a huge believer that you need to work hard in life. I had a chat with the lady on the other desk and she was in total agreement with me that the use of SN sites should be banned from these computers - I have written my complaint to the Council Angry

When I had to use the library computers recently when our internet was out of service I probably looked unemployable let alone unemployed, tracksuit bottoms, trainers and a dog walking coat. I'm a EMT who works shifts so would be there on a week day quite frequently. I wouldn't hog the computers for ages because I'm polite but I would expect not to have the same restrictions put on me that I have at work where I can't access any social networking sites including MN.

Southeastdweller · 16/01/2014 17:32

I'm guessing you don't get out much.

OxfordBags · 16/01/2014 17:33

OP, I think you are projecting your own issues and upset about your own current situation - you know, the one where YOU are also unemployed and not looking for a job - because it's easier to project the negativity onto simplistic targets instead of addressing what's painful.

Also, are the unemployed meant to be jobhunting all day and night? Would you allow them toilet breaks and time to eat?

BillyBanter · 16/01/2014 17:34

So you are lazy and now also fat? i'm reporting you to the Daily Mail.

How come you are allowed to not work because it wouldn't be worth your while but no one else is allowed this leeway?

And another thing!

How are the people looking at SN sites meant to know that the person waiting wants to print something important rather than go on SN sites?

Apart from all the huffing and puffing and loud complaints that is.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 16/01/2014 17:39

This is why library computers should be booked sessions only (even if you go and book at a machine in the library building itself). Because then nobody would ever be waiting around queuing for a machine - you'd know that it was your turn on number six at half past two, and that Steve's session will automatically expire at 2.29. And then you'd spend your half-hour however the hell you liked.

It's a shit system that doesn't let people with Important Things To Do book a computer for that job. But that isn't the fault of the kid watching videos on Facebook.

If OP wanted to write a letter to the council Hmm it should have been to suggest a better booking system, not the blacklisting of social networking sites.

I feel that nowadays a person who can't access social networking is fairly disenfranchised. Library access goes some way to redress the balance.

BillyBanter · 16/01/2014 17:42

But that system wouldn't properly express the importantness of some people compared to the worthlessness of others, Horatio.

UncleT · 16/01/2014 17:44

Neither will it deal with the real issue here - the fact that anyone who 'looks unemployed' should be banned from Facebook.

Caitlin17 · 16/01/2014 17:46

This adds nothing but if you're going to be pompous it's best to avoid phrases like "while people are sat"

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/01/2014 17:46

Good grief people - why are you giving Carrie such a hard time? All she is saying is that it is unacceptable for people whose handouts come from her taxes who are claiming benefits to be having any sort of fun at the council tax payers' expense! What could possibly be wrong with that?

Frankly, I think her library needs to employ her to Judge whether people deserve access to FB/social networking/any sort of fun.

Or maybe the fact that the vast majority of the posters on her thread think she is being nastily judgemental unreasonable might mean she actually is being unreasonable.

NCISaddict · 16/01/2014 17:47

That's me banned then Uncle at least I might get some more housework done.Grin

Twitterqueen · 16/01/2014 17:48

ROFLMFAO

can't believe this one! What a treat for a miserable, rainy Thursday.

Self-righteous? Pompous? entitled? Moi? surely not...

lougle · 16/01/2014 17:51

It's taken me until the end of this thread to realise that 'SN' is 'Social Networking' not 'Special Needs'.

I thought it was an odd complaint.

YABU, either way.

Having been initially convinced this was a wind up I'm now sadly feeling it isn't. There really are people out there suffering from such breathtaking hypocrisy and lack of self awareness. I feel so sorry for you, OP. It can't be pleasant living in your blinkered little world. Whatever you wrote in your letter to re council I suspect it will give them a bit of amusement but it must surely be embarrassing to come to the realisation that people are laughing at you.

lougle · 16/01/2014 17:57

YABU because you were intending to take up the use of a computer when actually you didn't want to use a computer, you just wanted to print some documents.

At least they actually wanted to use the computer. Wink

Caitlin17 · 16/01/2014 17:57

To be fair to the really real Carrie Bradshaw she was shallow but I recall her also being quite keen on good manners and actually judging people by how they behave.

I think the really real Carrie Bradshaw would have politely asked one of the FB users if she could hop on to print urgent docs and as with Silver Apple's, Dawn's and I'm sure my son and most other people I'm sure they'd have let her use it with no problems.

UncleT · 16/01/2014 17:59

Popular catalogue store - 21.99.

Most popular Internet auction site - 19.90 (same model, brand new).

Hardly going to need months of saving, even for the average unemployed or unwashed person.

MoreLifeInATrampsVest · 16/01/2014 18:04

It's ok OP, Slimming World is really good if you stick to it then you can go back to dancing. Be a private dancer. A dancer for money.... and buy a bloody printer!!

Or just stop being so idiotic, either works!

BeverleyMoss · 16/01/2014 18:05

Ah but UncleT, OP wouldn't want just any old printer surely?

Wink

Good point, Billy. Perhaps poor people could wear the Hat Of Unworthiness whilst browsing?
