£475k isn't exactly affordable mind, but WTF?

OP posts:
Artandco · 15/01/2014 16:23

£1800 :(

IHeartKingThistle · 15/01/2014 16:27

It's 3 minutes from Waldegrave Girls' School too. State school, single sex, ridiculously good results... that'll do it!

bakingtins · 15/01/2014 16:29

I wouldn't pay that if I bargained them down by a million quid. That house would be about 300k where I am (and I still wouldn't want it, lacking in any character or redeeming features)
The house in Derbyshire on the other hand, next time I have a spare 1.3 million I'd snap it up.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 15/01/2014 16:36

The thing is, if you know the area, you'll get past the awfulness of the house's exterior. 5 beds and aesthetically pleasing would cost a hell of a lot more. Crazy price looked at objectively, normal for the market in that part of London...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/01/2014 16:39

You'd have to be mad to spend that much on that house in Basingstoke, there are two or three nice roads and the rest of that area is horrible. The secondary schools are shit, unless you are a Catholic.

That house in Teddington is horrid. So dull and depressing. You would buy it for the plot, rip it down and start again - surely?

RiverRocks · 15/01/2014 16:43

I saw a lot of properties similar to this when we were house hunting this time last year - for about £150,000. I am Oop North, though.

And Artandco - your rent is nearly three times my mortgage and I live in a 3 bed detached house in a naice commuter village with two gardens. That is crazy Confused

AgaPanthers · 15/01/2014 16:55

Alibaba, don't know much about Basingstoke, but I'm guessing there's in reality less antisocial behaviour etc. than in Teddington. It's just that people overlook these problems in London.

Also if you are spending £700k on a house you are probably sending the kids private.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/01/2014 16:57

Basingstoke house is lovely though, and so close to the station. And yes, I do know Basingstoke.

rallytog1 · 15/01/2014 17:44

Teddington is extremely desirable and Waldegrave Road is extremely handy for all the local transport, shops, eateries, schools etc. So it doesn't surprise me, even if it is a right munter of a house.

Tulip26 · 15/01/2014 17:52

In Devon? Bigbury on sea. Can't find anything on Zoopla at the moment, really. My Grandparents two-bed bungalow went for 600k down there last year.

AntoinetteCosway · 15/01/2014 18:05

It's ridiculous but doesn't surprise me. My DM's house in SW London is an utterly character-less 4 bed terrace and identical houses on the street are going for over a million. She bought it for £200k in the early 90s.

AgaPanthers · 15/01/2014 18:12

This 2-bed bungalow 'only' went for £410k

This sold for £1.8m, nice little holiday home:

£1.2m:

Bigger with more land than the Teddington shithole.

Would have thought it would be quicker (and a damn sight cheaper) to get to a holiday home in, say, Spain, than Devon though.

People very silly.

You can rent this not far from me for £5,500 per week! So £22000 a month

Tulip26 · 15/01/2014 18:27

That last Bigbury one, I remember when that was being built. Gorgeous, built almost right into the cliffs. They buy up the "cheaper" ones with land to build into.

AgaPanthers · 15/01/2014 18:28

That's a short-term let. I'm not sure what the going rate is for something like that though, so much froth in the listings.

Or for a little more you could have this one.

These are in Birmingham for the same price, I would buy the first one in a second for the land alone!

miffybun73 · 15/01/2014 18:54

I'd move away from London, buy a very large house in a nice area of Manchester/Cheshire for £495,000 and save £1 million.

foodismyfriend · 15/01/2014 19:32

I live in Teddinggton. There's great schools and it's a really nice area to live in - close to the city as well. That price is totally normal for a house of that size round here.

Crowler · 15/01/2014 19:38

Wait. This is correct? Is Teddington more expensive than London?

foodismyfriend · 15/01/2014 19:45

teddington is in greater london/Richmond upon thames

Crowler · 15/01/2014 19:50

Is Teddington a nice part of Richmond? How would it compare to say, Kew? This price is a bit surprising to me mostly because it's really not a nice house.

foodismyfriend · 15/01/2014 19:57

yes there's lots of parks and greenery, as someone mentioned before there's waldegrave school which gets really good exam results as well as teddington which has a 100% A* - C at gcse

Artandco · 15/01/2014 19:59

It would be around the same in Kew
