To think hair length does not have anything to do with age?

Looby12 · 14/01/2014 13:04

Two colleagues at work were just talking about hair, colleague 1 (mid 20's with shoulder length hair) said she had a trim before xmas and will be keeping an eye on the length as she wouldn't want to get to "that point", colleague 2 looked confused, colleague 1 said "you know when its that length when you are too old for it and look nice from behind but turn round looking all haggard". Cue embarrassed looks as they both realised I could over hear and I have much longer hair (i'm only aged 35 by the way)

The cheeky bugger, since when can older people not have longer hair???

Would I be unreasonable to say to her its not her hair that is the problem its her face!

It seems to me that most of the policing of older women's appearance is done by other women. We certainly don't need men to put us in our boxes.

I especially Hmm those women who kindly allow long hair if it looks nice or suits the woman. Lots of that crapola on this thread.

GhostsInSnow · 14/01/2014 18:36

BOF you look lovely honey!

My Mum still has hair to her bum at 78, she wears it up in a bun mostly and it always looks beautiful and sophisticated. As I said above I'm 41 this year and I don't intend on cutting mine off at any point soon or removing my piercings. Here is Me as we are being brave.

I've never really been much for worrying what other folk think though.

BOFtastic · 14/01/2014 18:40

Wow, you shouldn't change a thing- what a great pic.

LessMissAbs · 14/01/2014 18:47

Pretty old fashioned thinking that women beyond whatever the age is shouldn't have long hair. Long hair can be very elegant, though it depends on the face shape and condition of the hair. Whereas the generic pudding bowl hairstyle that appears to prevail on middle aged woman around here can look quite scruffy.

I think a lot of it is to do with jealousy and hair often losing body and quality as people age. There are so many things you can do with your hair now that unless you are very unlucky with it, theres no reason to resort to short hair unless you want to.

"Most people" don't look that good anyway, so why take fashion advice off "most people"?

raggedymum · 14/01/2014 18:48

BOF and honey, you're both gorgeous! Love your hair.

I'm 40 with long hair and no plans to chop. I'd love to have a long grey plait like my aunt, but my hair is persistently avoiding the early-grey of my family (my Mum and aunt went grey in their 20s, I still only have a few strands).

fatlazymummy · 14/01/2014 18:50

Bof and honey you both look beautiful.
I'm 53, and still have long hair (usually in a bun, to be fair), I couldn't give a monkeys if other people think it's age appropiate. Nowadays we don't have to have our perms and sets, or our blue rinses, thank goodness.
I even wear jeans - perhaps these people think I should be wearing a beige twinset and pearls.

Caitlin17 · 14/01/2014 18:52

I do think long hair worn down looks odd on anyone over 40. Mine was long until about 48 but I'd been wearing it up for at least a decade and I eventually got fed up and cut it.

Mabelface · 14/01/2014 18:52

I'm nearly 44 and have absolutely fabulous long hair that's red (dyed), thick and curly and the envy of many people. It's staying till I'm a right old fart and can't deal with it any more. Then I might have a blue rinse.

Bogeyface · 14/01/2014 18:53

I am 40 with very red, very long hair and I am sure I have given people a shock before now but I dont care :o

My mother is a follower of the rules. You can long hair until you are 30, then you are allowed a bob, after that you have to go short!

GhostsInSnow · 14/01/2014 18:53

I'm not quite ready to go grey yet and I do dye my roots a dark brown but I only have a few greys yet...... gulp.

I think part of my fear stems from childhood, my hair is very thick and was incredibly thick as a child. It came to the back of my knees by the time I was about 8. The weight of my hair was causing headaches and the GP advised my Mum to have it trimmed to lighten it. Of course my Mother took me in and had a pageboy cut. I think I cried for a week and it's stupidly haunted me since. I've always been very careful with hairdressers and trusting them to only trim a little, it is daft I know but the thought of having short hair again petrifies me.

Would be easier though, as well as thick its naturally wavy so my GHD's are always at arms reach Blush

ScarletLady02 · 14/01/2014 18:53

BOF you are utterly gorgeous!

I've tried uploading a pic of my new 'do but it's being an arse. I have a few hair pics on my profile as I'm a bit of a show off, but I've had quite a drastic restyle recently. About 3/4s of my head is now shaved. I'll try and post a link, I hope it doesn't make me look old Grin as it's short AND white! Excuse the slightly poncey posing, they're pics from my makeup blog

ScarletLady02 · 14/01/2014 18:54

Honey you're stunning as well Smile

GhostsInSnow · 14/01/2014 18:56

Scarlet that colour is amazing! You have an elfin face that really suits short hair like that, gorgeous!

KatieScarlett2833 · 14/01/2014 18:57

I have bra length hair and am 45. It is cut and coloured every 6 weeks. My hair is very thick and naturally wavy, short hair just makes me look like Crystal Tips.
So I'll be keeping the length, regardless of the women hating shite thanks Smile

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 14/01/2014 18:59

Natalie j robb is 40 this year and has beautiful long hair. Im sure there are many others who prove age isnt the decider rather overall appearance but she was the first tht came to mind.

ScarletLady02 · 14/01/2014 18:59

Ta love Smile

I always wanted to take the plunge but I had quite a bit more weight on and was worried it wouldn't suit me, but I did it just before my Mum died last month as she's always said it would suit me.

The upkeep of the colour is a right bugger though.

BOFtastic · 14/01/2014 18:59

I love that hairstyle! It's a really dramatic look, and you carry it off so well.Does it take a lot of maintenance (less now, I imagine, if you've shaved three quarters of it offGrin?

Bogeyface · 14/01/2014 19:00

I have been thinking for a while about having a hair cut like Scarlett I used to have it vv short when I was younger, but am not sure now!

She looks stunning but I think I would look like soldier with a crew cut :o

GhostsInSnow · 14/01/2014 19:03

Scarlet, I know what you mean. Mine was black on top and blue underneath for a while and keeping the colour was a nightmare. Went to pillar box red which was slightly easier to keep but still a PITA.

When I started working in a high school though the uniform policy was no unnatural hair colour so I've had to go back to brown. Sad

ScarletLady02 · 14/01/2014 19:05

I was really worried Bogeyface as short hair can look amazing on some women, but not so much on others. The maintenance isn't so bad at the minute. I do the colour myself, my DH shaves the sides etc (he did barber training) and my hairdresser is awesome so it'll grow out nicely I'm sure Smile

One of the main reasons I did it was to get rid of bleach damage.

I wear extensions a lot (as shown in my profile) so as it gets longer I'll probably stick them back in until I can afford to get it cut again.

ScarletLady02 · 14/01/2014 19:06

One of the reasons I love white hair is it comes under the "natural colour" umbrella. I've been pretty much every other colour imaginable

FreakinScaryCaaw · 14/01/2014 19:07

ScarlettLady02 love your pics. You don't look very old though?

FreakinScaryCaaw · 14/01/2014 19:08

You're 29!! Pah a mere child. Wink

ScarletLady02 · 14/01/2014 19:10

I'm 30 - not old at all, I was just showing that short hair isn't necessarily the older lady's domain either Grin

It's only hair...do what the fuck you like I say!

ScarletLady02 · 14/01/2014 19:11

Plus, if we're being brutally honest, I love hair, makeup and fashion so any excuse to talk about it and show off pics is a bonus
