To think hair length does not have anything to do with age?

Two colleagues at work were just talking about hair, colleague 1 (mid 20's with shoulder length hair) said she had a trim before xmas and will be keeping an eye on the length as she wouldn't want to get to "that point", colleague 2 looked confused, colleague 1 said "you know when its that length when you are too old for it and look nice from behind but turn round looking all haggard". Cue embarrassed looks as they both realised I could over hear and I have much longer hair (i'm only aged 35 by the way)

The cheeky bugger, since when can older people not have longer hair???

Would I be unreasonable to say to her its not her hair that is the problem its her face!

Straggly, unkempt greying long hair is ageing. But then so can the dreaded "mum" haircut or a bog standard bob. If you care, the most important thing is just to go to the hairdresser regularly!

I am early 40s and wear my hair long and usually loose. as long as I keep it properly cut, coloured and it looks far more flattering on me then a shorter cut.

I'm 55 next birthday and I have long hair, which I dye to cover up the grey. I wear it loose, up in a bun or french plait. I have had short hair and it looks like a 'bog brush' and we all know how popular they are on MN.

I once saw a lady at a festival - must have been over 60, she was white, had long silver grey hair in dreadlocks. She looked a million dollars - front, back and sideways. I'd love long silver grey dreads - I just don't have the nerve - yet....

Bollocks to imaginary rules about hair length and age - my mother is 83 and has hair halfway down her back and it's dyed pillar box red, she looks fab! She also has very good skin for her age (very few wrinkles, unlike her 40something daughter :( ). She says she has no choice about getting old and infirm, but if it has to happen she's going as disgracefully as possible.

I have memories of my mum having her rather lovely, naturally rich dark brown hair repeatedly hacked to a couple of inches long.

It didn't suit her and made her look 20 years older than she was.

I'm 43 and mine's very thick. VERY thick. It's long because it looks far better when I wear it up in a nice style with a fringe than when it's in a huge fat bob or short which just doesn't work on hair as thick as mine.

BUT I never wear it down in public. I do look witch-like.

My mum is in her 60s and has mid back length hair. A few years ago she decided to cut it to a bob as she felt 'too old' for long hair. It didn't suit her and she looked about 10 years older, and she hated it. She's grown it back now and she's happy, that's all that matters.

As someone said up thread, it's all part of the innate self belief of certain 20 somethings that they know best (yes, I remember making cringeworthy pronouncements) when I was in my teens and 20s I had short hair, culminating in the "Annie Lennox", as I got older I embraced the longer styles, as long as it's well cut and maintained it looks good.
But anyway, here 💩 Is the world's tiniest shit I give about stupid pronouncements telling me what I can do.

I'm silver, over 60 and have short spikey hair, simply because my hair's fine and if I grow it it looks crap. If I had thicker hair I'd definitely grow it's!

Some "youngsters" in their mid 20's think anyone over 40 is old. That said, I'm forty eleven and do find that with a shorter neater cut I look better than if my hairs grows longer. My face shape has changed in the last decade and once last year when I got a much shorter cut more than one person (from different circles) said it took years off me and looking at photos, I could kind of see what they meant.

I had a crop all through my teens and into my 20s because I hated my wispy bushy hair and just wanted to ignore it. I didn't even own a hairdryer.

Now technology has caught up with me (Frizz Ease, protein hair masks, straightening perms, GHD and tongs) I've been enjoying my "crowning glory" since the age of 27 and have no intentions of going back.

Maybe that's the reason our mothers and grandmothers went for the chop. Weakening hair could only be disguised by having as little as possible.

My grandmother (born in Victorian times) told me how proud she was when the time came to wear her hair "up" when she was in her teens.

In the 1920s she bobbed her hair to the consternation of her own mother.

I cut my long hair in my 20s because I felt "too old" for long hair. Never regretted it.

It's great that there are no "rules" any more.

I'm 36, my hair is thick, a little curly, chestnut brown and down past my bra strap. I love my hair.
It's been short and blond, many different colours, my favourite style when young was an inverted bob with the back shaved really close to my head but it was poker straight then and just fell into that style. Having my daughter made it go curly.
Now, it gets cut regularly, I don't heat style it all that often, I colour it every 8 weeks as have quite a few greys shining through and have found a colour really similar to my own. Dh loves it, I love it and I won't be cutting it short for anyone!

I am 45 and have very thick, curly hair that is bra strap length. Longer hair makes the wild curls more manageable! It is regularly coloured atm, but contemplating going for highlights to blend in the grey/silver. I also have quite a round face, so the length is actually quite flattering! I was told only yesterday, that I don't look my age.

It's great that women aren't expected to look invisible any more. My mil keeps saying you can't have long grey hair... erm, why not?

What a load of bollocks. I love seeing older women with a head of swishy long hair. It depresses me when someone gets to 40 and cuts their hair off because they "should".

I'm 31 and have very thick and dark hair that looks awful short because it literally grows upwards until the length weighs it down.

I also love having long hair and am going to grow it. My mum is 49 and she has very long hair as well.
