to think 65 quid is a lot for Mathilda the musical?

To those who have been to see it, is it worth the price?
Am I out of touch with theatre pricing?
Phantom is cheaper and if my kids were older we'd go see that (aged 12 and 10).
I think 65 quid each is a lot but if is as good as the reviews, then maybe its worth it??
Dates are early Feb on a Fri night as can't get 3 seats together at any other performance that weekend.

thanks in advance for any replies.

Can you really not get it any cheaper? I think that's a ridiculous price - I've been to some great shows in London for £20 (adult price), but admittedly Matilda is still sold out.
My daughters were taken to see Matilda by relatives and were literally still raving about it a week later - they didn't want to talk about anything else. They are a similar age to yours, and into musicals. Way more suitable for children than Phantom, and a much better show IMO.

capercaillie · 09/01/2014 12:16

It is very good. CAn you book further ahead? I got tickets for a Saturday matinee at £40 each which seemed more reasonable.

bossybeetroot · 09/01/2014 12:19

We paid the same and it was really worth it. Still talk about it a year later and listen to the songs. Fantastic show.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 09/01/2014 12:22

We managed to see Matilda for £29.50 but were sat up in the gods and couldn't actually hear all the words clearly. I'd have paid more for better seats but those were the only seats available. Not sure I'd pay £65 each though, that is too much to see any show IMO.

Showy · 09/01/2014 12:22

I went when it was quite newly out. I'm not sure of the cost but definitely not that much at all. It was absolutely brilliant.

shinny · 09/01/2014 12:23

I rang theatre direct and he offered me 3 seats together for 65. I found similar sounding seats on another theatre booking website for 59 I think it was but there was a booking fee to pay. It just seems steep. I was hoping we'd get tickets on the Monday but that seems to be the actors day off. Yes probably could have got them cheaper if Id booked earlier but wasn't sure we were going to be able to come.
Good to hear that bossy thinks its worth it so maybe I'll stop moaning and book!
I also remember going to the theatre for 20 pounds and going very regularly as it was so cheap! There's no such thing as child prices now it seems!
thanks all for replies

It is a fab show and worth every penny. We've seen it twice and would happily go again.

London theatre prices are £££ though. We took the dds to see Les Mis recently and couldn't find any decent priced seats for love nor money.

Depends on the show. For something like Matilda, if you can afford it, def worth the money.

bossybeetroot · 09/01/2014 12:29

Honestly, we all thought it was amazing....sets, music, actors....one of the best shows we've ever seen. We sat in the stalls and were really glad we paid the extra.

Sukebind · 09/01/2014 12:31

A friend of mine who is very, very careful and astute with money went to see it with her child who is about 8 and she said it was absolutely outstanding and really worth the money. She said the only problem is that other shows now seem flat in comparison.

Picturesinthefirelight · 09/01/2014 12:33

We were right at the back for £35 but I'd go again & pay £65 it was fantastic.

Biscuitsneeded · 09/01/2014 12:34

We went and paid about £45 each in December 2012. We were right up in the gods though. It was absolutely brilliant. We came out saying we wished we'd paid for better seats, just so that we could see some of the fabulous 'magic' tricks she does closer up. It depends on your budget and your priorities. We don't do very expensive holidays, or private schools, or lots of gadgets, but I'm prepared to pay for an experience like a top west end show. My kids absolutely loved it.

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 09/01/2014 12:40

I thought it was one of the worst shows I've ever seen.

But we were up in the gods and the theatre it was in is a bloody awful venue and to the left of us were 2 kids playing on iPads and to the front of us people encouraging their children to stand up to get a better view...

Despite all that I still didn't like the music

CreepyLittleBat · 09/01/2014 12:40

It's worth it imo - one of the best three shows I've ever seen. I am taking my 9 yr old to see Phantom next month though - I wouldn't think it was unsuitable unless the child is of a nervous disposition or has a Lloyd Webber phobia etc.

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 09/01/2014 12:42

Now Phantom was the WORST show I've seen

Grin

I do like theatre and musicals honestly and am ridiculously excited to be seeing Miss Saigon this year.

KhunZhoop · 09/01/2014 12:45

Wow, seats were £80 when my niece wanted to see it a year or so ago. I'd bite your hand off for £65 tickets! Yes, it's expensive, but it's hard to get tickets to any show for less, these days.

My niece loved it, btw, wants to see it again.

endlesstidying · 09/01/2014 12:50

You're all making me want to save up to take DD. Anyone know how long its running for please? It may be October half term before we have time for a trip to London

wowfudge · 09/01/2014 12:51

That's a reasonable figure for a West End show. If you think about the ticket price for a big pop concert, e.g. the likes of Kylie, Take That, etc where the whole thing is a spectacle, it's on a par. Cheaper tickets mean you are further away from the stage and when there are effects, etc it's worth paying more for a better seat.

wowfudge · 09/01/2014 12:51

And fwiw, your kids will probably enjoy Matilda more.

nobutreally · 09/01/2014 12:55

It is expensive - but as others have said, it is a really fantastic show - one of the best things I've seen in the West End, and we go to the theatre/ballet etc with the kids about 3/4 times a year.

My mum paid for our Matilda tickets though Grin

shinny · 09/01/2014 12:57

OMG I just logged onto the RSC website and have got tickets for 25 quid each!! We are in upper circle but view looks fine according to their very cool webcam thing. Im delighted! And it just goes to show that if you keep looking at different times you can get better prices.

Although from what some of you have said maybe I shouldn't have been so stingy and we would have a much better view.....

We'll see. Thanks for all your comments! Smiley face: Smile

I'm not a Londoner, but visited London summer of last year and went to see 3 very good shows, all for either £19 or £20, by checking the Web for shows that seemed not to be full and then visiting the theatres. One of these was a front row seat for Chorus Line and was fantastic. So there are cheapish tickets available, but prob not for Matilda until more people have seen it.

Fleta · 09/01/2014 12:58

We'll be taking our 7 year old to see Phantom later this year - she ADORES the show Grin

I don't think £65 is a bad price

nancy75 · 09/01/2014 13:00

Matilda is one of the shows that you can get in the kids week promo (buy an adult get a child free) they are not for sale at the moment (I think they go on sale in June for use in August) you have to get on the website early on the day it opens to get Matilda tickets as it sells out fast. I have been lucky and got tickets twice, my daughter loved it so much she would happily go a third time!

When you look at most tickets for London show £65 is about the normal price for good seats.

Dancergirl · 09/01/2014 13:36

You'll be VERY luck to get Kids' Week tickets for Matilda. Phone lines are usually jammed from when they open and the website often crashes. Worth a try though if you want to wait till then.
