To those who have been to see it, is it worth the price?
Am I out of touch with theatre pricing?
Phantom is cheaper and if my kids were older we'd go see that (aged 12 and 10).
I think 65 quid each is a lot but if is as good as the reviews, then maybe its worth it??
Dates are early Feb on a Fri night as can't get 3 seats together at any other performance that weekend.

thanks in advance for any replies.

Getintolondontheatre.co.uk
For tickets to 45 London shows from £10-£45.

Really do check this link as its a scheme to get more people to the London theatres during Jan/Feb. There are no booking fees or postage to pay during this time.

Matilda is excellent - been twice and would go again any time. And that's despite my DDs playing the music constantly since (which normally renders any music unbearable). But I think it made us not love Charlie which we saw recently. Just couldn't compare. (Once The Musical on the other hand is tremendous ...)

soontobeburns · 09/01/2014 20:39

Wow thats expensive.

Our theatre here I joined as a member for £50 (Grand Opera House Belfast). Last month I booked....3 panto tickets, 2 give my head peace tickets, 2 New Jersey nights tickets, 2 Derren Brown tickets and 2 Dreamboats and Petticoats tickets including booking fee for £193.

Yes 11 tickets/5 shows for the price of 3 West End tickets!

I looked up Book of Mormon on the web, and they said wouldn't allow entry to under 17s.
Pity - my 9 year old loves the CD (ok, a bit sweary, and some sexual references but she doesn't notice that)

Tiredemma · 09/01/2014 20:52

We are going next month- have seats in the gods though.

Picturesinthefirelight · 09/01/2014 21:16

Considering Mormon includes references to aids, female genital mutilation bestiality, a song called has Diga Ebowe which means fuck off god I'd say its adults only

I really want to see it but prices for that are astronomical

Dromedary · 09/01/2014 22:29

I'd take a 15 year old, if allowed. I don't think references to fing a frog are meant very seriously. More concerned by the fing a baby motif, as this is based on reality.
Tried to get one of the £20 tickets that they do a lottery for, and the woman next to me won a pair of them for the 2nd time (and her friend won too) -GRR

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 09/01/2014 22:58

It's about what we paid for pretty good seats last year. We're going to see Charlie in a couple of weeks and have paid just a bit more. I think it's a fairly standard price for decent seats. The less you pay, the crapper the view IME. e
Enjoy Matilda, we liked it but I wouldn't go back.

mrsjay · 09/01/2014 22:59

the Lion King touring production was 50 i was Shock and those were middle priced tickets i am shocked at the price of theatre tickets i was looking to take the dds to London at some point but tbh i just dont think i can afford or justify theatre ticket prices

Biscuitsneeded · 09/01/2014 23:00

Cingolimama, it was Ds' 8th birthday present. A few people did say to me 'oh, you know there's some swearing don't you?' (and there is, and some quite dark/sad parts) but DS was fine with it. He laughed his head off at the funny bits, was gripped by the dancing and cried with me in the scene where Billy reads the letter from his dead mum. He also now understands a fair bit of recent British history and knows who Margaret Thatcher was. And we had a lovely time! However, DS2, who is a different kind of boy, I probably wouldn't take for years yet!

pancakesfortea · 09/01/2014 23:05

I use theatremonkey.com to make sure that I get the best seats at whatever price I'm willing to pay. It tells you which seats are good value and which to avoid. Also which are bad for kids/short people/tall people/whatever. Using that we got great seats for 45 for Matilda. Still more than I usually pay (went with posh mates who normally pay top price) but the people one row in front had paid 65.

Picturesinthefirelight · 09/01/2014 23:27

The letter scene is heartbreaking.

chrome100 · 10/01/2014 00:16

I saw Phantom at 11 and loved it! Perfect age, imho.

fuckinghatehim · 10/01/2014 00:36

Ds1 (9) saw Matilda last year (i think) with my mum, so no idea how much she paid, but he talks about it all the time.
Ds2 (7) is desperate to see Phantom, I am hyping to take him once I start my job.
We are going to see Charlie at some point, I can't wait!

Well done on the prices you paid though op, I hope you enjoy the show .

WhenWhyWhere · 10/01/2014 00:46

I go to the theatre a lot but I don't much like musicals......except for Matilda. I thought is was absolutely fantastic. Everything about it was amazing. I would happily see it again.

I like good seats though. I would rather see fewer shows and have good seats rather than lots of shows and have poor seats.

MILLYMOLLYMANDYMAX · 10/01/2014 01:03

We paid £179 for 2 seats and still think it was the best show I have seen. Dd has friends in the cast.

I use Lastminute.com to book theatre and dinner trips, 39 Steps was £15 each with dinner included. Last show we saw was Spamalot which was £29 each for good stalls seats + dinner on Tesco vouchers. Spamalot was hilarious, even ds who hates the theatre enjoyed it.

cingolimama · 10/01/2014 08:42

Thanks Biscuit!

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 10/01/2014 08:46

I saw Sweeney Todd with Michael ball and and Imelda Staunton and Jason manford in London during the Olympics.

MIL had bought us tickets in really crap seats but as the theatre was empty we were able to move to anywhere we wanted and had an almost exclusive viewing of it!

Utterly amazing!

Chigley1 · 10/01/2014 08:55

My daughter is desperate to see it but is only just 5 and on the website it says under 6s are not allowed. :-(

mychildrenarebarmy · 10/01/2014 09:09

It's most definitely worth it shinny. We saw it with our daughter when it first opened in Stratford and loved it. As soon as we left I said that if it went to London I would love to see it again. DH then took me to see it in London for our anniversary after it opened there. We had front row of the Dress Circle and they were great for us but would probably be a little bit less so for children because of the bar at the front.

We are going back again this year with DD and DS because DS is desperate to see it after listening to the soundtrack over, and over again with DD (it doesn't get old as the music is so good) and we were given some theatre tokens for Christmas. This time we are sitting in the stalls a row in front of the premium stalls seats.

I have never been, and would never have expected to be, one of those people who would go and see a show more than once. This show really is something special though and it really is every bit as good as the reviews say, if not more so. I'd be amazed if you regretted spending the money.

mychildrenarebarmy · 10/01/2014 09:10

Chigley1 The under 6 thing on the website says it's a recommendation. They won't be checking age on entry.

tilbatilba · 10/01/2014 09:15

We paid the same as you. We all thought it was fantastic - age range 64 - 12. One of the best children's performances we have been to. Go - you'll love it and it is just SO much better having a good seat.

MILLYMOLLYMANDYMAX · 10/01/2014 09:18

We had front row of the Dress Circle and they were great for us but would probably be a little bit less so for children because of the bar at the front.

All seat prices are the same there are no discounts for children except for kids week.

googlyeyes · 10/01/2014 09:32

Have just booked 4 £65 tickets to see Matilda in May, front row of dress circle, from RSC who are considerably cheaper than ticketmaster and similar (same tickets for Charlie coming up as £104 each!!)

I've taken 9 year old dd to see Matilda twice and we're. Ow taking DH and 4.5year old ds2, who will love it. I saw that the min age recommendation is 6 but he really is incredibly well-behaved in shows/ at the cinema, gets completely absorbed in the whole experience, and what's more thanks to dd he already knows every word of every song in Matilda!

It's a really amazing show. Like nothing else we've ever seen
