To those who have been to see it, is it worth the price?
Am I out of touch with theatre pricing?
Phantom is cheaper and if my kids were older we'd go see that (aged 12 and 10).
I think 65 quid each is a lot but if is as good as the reviews, then maybe its worth it??
Dates are early Feb on a Fri night as can't get 3 seats together at any other performance that weekend.

thanks in advance for any replies.

Matilda is one of the few shows in town that doesn't even do a cheap cast rate. You won't get 'cheap' cheap for Matilda (like I don't tend to see things unless I can get a decent seat for under £40 on a deal) but I saw it for my birthday and I think it is the only show I've seen that is actually worth the face value ticket price for a £65 ticket.

Saw Mormon for £20 (day seat lottery) and it was awesome but not worth paying the £75ish for the next cheapest tickets!!

Biscuitsneeded · 09/01/2014 13:55

I took DS to see Billy Elliott, on a Monday night in the school hols. We paid £19.50 each and sat in row D of the stalls! I think technically those seats are 'restricted view' because you are so close to the stage you perhaps can't see the actors' feet, but it mattered not a jot and it was incredible to see the character's facial expressions so close. There are good deals to be had in the West End if you know where to look, clearly. And BTW it was thing we liked best, after Matilda!

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 09/01/2014 13:59

I love threads about Matlida, I am thinking of getting tickets for DD birthday, everyone raves about it on MN op, there was a good comparison thread a while back and Matilda came back tops...

mumofthemonsters808 · 09/01/2014 13:59

I think £65 is a lot of money but the theatre is expensive and a special treat. Unless you want to be in the gods, I don't think there is anyway round it. I hate musical theatre but DD loves it, so I go along reluctantly and find it painful. She absolutely adored Matilda and was thrilled from the moment the curtains went back. It has now overtaken Wicked in her favourite musical list. I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

Dancergirl · 09/01/2014 14:06

Well done OP. We sat in the upper circle the first time, it was fine. Enjoy it.

Oh, and I recommend Belgo's a few doors away for something to eat after!

Dancergirl · 09/01/2014 14:06

Anyone seen Charlie yet? Wonder if it's as good..?

CheeseandPickledOnion · 09/01/2014 14:07

Awesome show. I loved every minute and would pay £65 again happily!

bossybeetroot · 09/01/2014 14:08

Charlie also excellent but in a different way.....can't go wrong with either.

glasgowsteven · 09/01/2014 14:10

Decent seats for Les mis if you chose restricted view, and they are not even that restricted!

cingolimama · 09/01/2014 17:00

Biscuit, I'm thinking of Billy Elliot next - my DD absolutely loved Matilda and glad to hear you enjoyed BE. Could I ask how old is your DS?

Doshusallie · 09/01/2014 17:08

I can only find tickets for £72 each in the Easter holidays....

ProfPlumSpeaking · 09/01/2014 17:11

matilda is truly fabulous.

OTOH so is The Light Princess, in quite a similar way, at the National and that is only (!) £42 per seat or less, and half that price for children (under 18). It is just as magical (but best for girls). You can also sell back the tickets up to 24 hours beforehand if some emergency crops up.

SoonToBeSix · 09/01/2014 17:15

I think it's worth it, I took my dd 9 it's the best show I have seen .

KatnipEvergreen · 09/01/2014 17:23

The National Theatre is much more reasonably priced in general than the West End theatres.

MrsDavidBowie · 09/01/2014 17:29

It really is superb. We have been twice, and I would happily go again. We've seen most things in the West End...loved Book of Mormon recently.
Sweeney Todd with Michael Ball was one of the best things I ever saw.
I love the theatre, and am lucky to go every 6 weeks or so.

I am off to Blithe Spirit(with the wonderful Angela Lansbury), a Sondheim review, some thriller thing at Richmond Theatre, Priscilla Queen of the desert and Cats over the next 3 or 4 months.
Oh and A Taste of Honey is on at the Lyttleton...£12 tickets. Grin

kitnkaboodle · 09/01/2014 17:36

I gaily suggested to my family that we go to see a show in London over Xmas - Matilda or Spamalot.

Worked out that if we went on the train, saw a show, had a meal and stayed in a Premier Inn (OK, OK I guess we needn't do the last!!) it would cost us £600

So we didn't ...

I'd love to sneak off to a London show on my own like I did pre-kids, but it would feel too mean

MrsDavidBowie - Sweeney Todd is one of the most awesome shows ever. I saw the Michael Ball one in Chichester (on my own and subesequently took my kids to see another version of it. I know it's not really child-appropriate but I just love exposing them to quality culture!! They loved it.

whatever5 · 09/01/2014 17:43

We paid £47. We were quite high up but there were cheaper seats than that. I think that £65 must be for good seats near the stage.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 09/01/2014 17:51

I got 2 tickets for £30/35 each I think when I went to see this in the summer with my DD. We were in the very back row at the very top tier but still had a great view. It's a great show.

MrsDavidBowie · 09/01/2014 18:26

Oh I love Sweeney Todd. saw MB Four times.

Dromedary · 09/01/2014 18:29

What annoys me a bit about Matilda is that the child actors get paid almost nothing, including Matilda herself. I know they have a great time and plenty more children would love to do it but the show makes a lot of money and I feel it's exploitative.

Should have added, I think we got them direct from the theatre box office online and you also got to check the view of the stage from your seat before purchasing. I was a bit wary as the price was so reasonable but as I was able to get an idea as to what the view would be, I bought them and was glad I did!Smile

TheSmallPrint · 09/01/2014 18:42

We paid around £80 each for four tickets but it was worth it and the DSs loved it. We only go about once a year and so I don't mind paying a bit more for good seats.

SouthernComforts · 09/01/2014 18:42

Ooh I love musicals and Matilda! Will it come to Manchester?
