....which refer to previous posts or posters, but don't add anything to the discussion, e.g. "I agree with x", "What x said", or even "^^ This.". What's the point, other than to get your username on the screen or jump on a bandwagon? If you're going to the trouble of posting, why not contribute something? If someone's already said exactly what you think, there's no need to post! Aaargh!

What CeliaLytton said ^^

Especially where someone's asking "AIBU?" they're trying to get a sense of the aggregate opinion. Just because someone's already said YABU, doesn't mean it's not useful to see whether the next 50 posters also think that or whether there's a roughly equal divide in opinions. It's sensible for people to cast their vote, even they are agreeing with what someone/everyone/no one has said, to give a sense of what the collective (and therefore more balanced and objective) opinion is.

Waves my big sword around.

scarletandblack · 08/01/2014 16:38

Yes, ok, I do get your point (many times over!), it's just that replies like

^

This.

seem to me like the equivalent of "End of." in a conversation.

Ah I see.

Yes, that could be interpreted as a sort of thingy.

I don't think it's always intended that way

What CeliaLytton said.

I always liked it when someone said they agreed with me on a thread. Both times in fact :)

I like it on the rare occasion someone agrees with me. Especially if they bold my name.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 08/01/2014 16:42

I have nothing of any interest to contribute other than that I love the name LittleThorinOakenshield - it makes me Grin

Feminine · 08/01/2014 16:43

I agree exit Grin

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 08/01/2014 16:43

In conversation, people indicate agreement. Otherwise someone would say something and there would be silence unless it was to argue. That'd be odd, right? Grin
I see this as the same thing.
