Saw Drive on BBC1 last Friday and cannot get it out of my head! He is an amazing actor, its not just that he's unbelievably hot. Keep listening to the soundtrack now - its brilliant. The funny thing is I'm really not a film person at all much to DP's annoyance but not I can't wait to watch RG's other films.

Anyone...?! Or have I been totally unreasonable posting this in AIBU?

The soundtrack is the only vaguely good thing about that film.

I think he is hugely overrated and that the movie is superficial hipster drivel.

MrsGoslingWannabe · 08/01/2014 10:39

Hipster?

God, the soundtrack is shite. It's full of songs that hamfistedly attempt to cue the audience's intended responses. Especially at the end.

I still quite liked the film when it first came out, though not sure if it would stand up ago a re-view.

Fleta · 08/01/2014 12:10

I don't think obsessions are unreasonable unless they have a negative effect on your life.

Enjoy and don't give it a thought.

Of course I know admit I've never seen the filme so it might be shite but still - you love it and thats all that matters.

Well that's you told MrsGosling Grin

I thought the film was ok. RG does the same acting in every film he is in and always seems to play the same role. He is hot though. So YABU to be obsessed about it but then what do I know? I have watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves about a million times Blush!

Ponyinthepool · 08/01/2014 12:36

Yanbu!

I've had this on a loop since watching it myself. It's a relief to know I'm not the only one :-)

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 08/01/2014 12:43

Saw it last night. It is a bit of a film that get's into your head I admit. Though I also have some sympathy for the view it is hipster drivel!

It's certainly about a woman with terrible taste in men.

This however is extremely funny and well worth a look....

YANBU! I saw it at the cinema when it came out, loved it then, and watched it again the other night and was not at all disappointed. Personally I thought it was well put together as a film and liked the soundtrack too, plus RG is indeed hot! It is really visually compelling and memorably. Luckily DH watched it with me and enjoyed it for different reasons...

minniebar · 08/01/2014 12:47

I love the Ryan Gosling 'Hey girl' memes.

DH was very taken with the film too (pretty sure he doesn't have a crush on him). There's some interesting stuff on Wiki about it, including the fact that they purposefully chose 'obvious' lyrics.

MrsGoslingWannabe · 08/01/2014 13:21

Hmm. I just wanted to know if I was weird being so fixated with it when I usually can't be bothered with films. It is pretty typical of my personality though (quite high on Asp spectrum I think - only done online tests)

I'm not sure RG always plays the same role. In Drive he doesn't say much but, boy, he expresses it on his face.

I think he was quite different and again brilliant in The Place Beyond The Pines. His voice breaking in desperation during the flawed bank robbery - frickin' awesome.

Now for my smug moment: I only watched Drive cos DP said his workmates keep telling him he looks like RG so I wanted to see (hadn't really seen him before or taken much notice). And he bloody does! So I see DP in a new light now although when I said to him last night that if he was a bit taller and pouted he'd be even more like RG, he wasn't impressed!

dexter73 · 08/01/2014 13:30

'The Place Beyond the Pines' was so similar to Drive though. He played the same character (tough guy with a soul) and did that mumbly, stary thing that he always does! It's funny how people can have such different views about films/actors.

Sallystyle · 08/01/2014 13:41

I have re-watched Crazy, Stupid Love time and time again.

RG is awesome in that. If you haven't watched it do it now!!

dexter73 · 08/01/2014 13:50

I'll have to add Crazy, Stupid, Love to my Lovefilm list - it looks good and I love Steve Carell.

Custardo · 08/01/2014 13:52

yabvu

I watched it years ago - started to watch it again on bcc I player and turned it off

Nancy66 · 08/01/2014 13:52

have you seen the youtube vid of him breaking up a fight on street in NY. Filmed by a passer by on mobile phone. You'll fancy him even more....

BlingBang · 08/01/2014 13:55

bunny - "The soundtrack is the only vaguely good thing about that film.

Saw it Friday as well as I had heard how great it was. It kept me interested as I didn't know anything about it and I enjoyed it enough but have to agree with Bunny. Pretentious, and very hipster.

MatildaWhispers · 08/01/2014 13:58

I don't understand why it received so much critical acclaim. I watched it last Friday too, and although I watched it all the way through I found it hard to warm to Ryan's character given the level of violence he was capable of (in between some very long stares on his part).

BunnyLebowski · 08/01/2014 14:04

It's pretentious wank. Soulless, charmless and instantly disposable rubbish masquerading as some deep portrayal of a counter culture.

It's a poorly written film that, with no discernible plot or character development to offer, resorts to ultra-violence as a shock tactic.

Carey Mulligan is completely wasted in it and Gosling just mutters and pouts. And he's not even that good looking. He's got tiny wee beady eyes.

BlingBang · 08/01/2014 14:10

I read the the original script and character was a lot more calm and less violent, director and Gosling changed their minds and went a lot darker.

I did enjoy it, gave that kind of vibe a bit like Badlands but not as good.
