Saw Drive on BBC1 last Friday and cannot get it out of my head! He is an amazing actor, its not just that he's unbelievably hot. Keep listening to the soundtrack now - its brilliant. The funny thing is I'm really not a film person at all much to DP's annoyance but not I can't wait to watch RG's other films.

Badlands. Now there's a film.

DeadMansBones · 08/01/2014 14:18

crazy stupid love was the film that started my gosling obsession.

I love him, watch Half Nelson and Blue Valentine he is brilliant in both of them.

Beachcomber · 08/01/2014 14:18

Gosling is good in Half Nelson and Lars and The Real Girl.

He doesn't always play the same role.

I thought he was pretty good in Drive too actually - although I do think it is very overrated (and whathisname the director seems to like himself a lot).

BlingBang · 08/01/2014 14:19

Indeed it is, blew me away when I saw it years ago - very haunting. Malick has a new movie coming out with my favourite actor of the moment (if he makes the final cut).

Lulabellarama · 08/01/2014 14:27

I'm a Ryan Gosling obsessive too.

I found Drive had quite an effect on me, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, it's too violent for my tastes these days.

As far as his other films go this is the order you should watch them in and why:

Blue Valentine: Possibly my favourite film. He is utterly beguiling in the younger scenes and Michelle Williams is fantastic in it.

The Ides of March: A fantastic film whether or not you give a hoot about Mr Gosling. There is a scene with Emma Stone, in the bar, that just makes my stomach flip though. Also has George Clooney in.

Half Nelson: Gritty film, probably his best performance but quite hard going and not exactly a perving over him type of film.

Crazy, Stupid Love: Terrible film overall, and I also love Steve Carrell. Absolutely worth it for Ryan's performance as an uber confident woman-magnet. Will make you desperate to try 'the lift'.

The Notebook: Far too schmaltzy for me and don't like his character in it, too wussy and not so attractive.

Ganster Squad: Awful, awful film. Don't watch it, it's not worth it, even when you are a big Gosling fan.

I haven't yet seen: Lars and the Real Girl, Only God Forgives or PLace Beyond the Pines yet, but will offer my opinion as and when I do :)

miaowmix · 08/01/2014 14:31

RG is HOT. Fact. Crazy Stupid Love and Blue Valentine. Sigh. I might watch the notebook tonight. Fuck, yeah Grin

BlingBang · 08/01/2014 14:36

He looks kind of weedy with his eyes too close together.

BlingBang · 08/01/2014 14:36

And don't forget the pointy chin!

pigsinmud · 08/01/2014 14:40

I had a bit of a thing about this film last year. I don't normally watch violent films and have to look away from the screen, but there was something about this film. The scene in the lift - which is horrid really - I found beautiful! Dh was most disturbed. I kept rewinding to watch that bit again....not the violent bit though.
So yanbu!
I think I have seen most RG films, apart from Only God Forgives.

anchovies · 08/01/2014 14:48

The comments on the youtube clip of him breaking up a fight made me chuckle:

.....and throws his GIANT, THROBBING man muscle of an arm against the perpetrator and when he spots Ry Ry's huge guns, he throws his hands up in defeat.

It is one serious arm

Sallystyle · 08/01/2014 15:27

You look like you're fucking photoshopped!!

Sallystyle · 08/01/2014 15:28

BTW I used to think he was bad looking. I used to google him and just couldn't see how someone with small eyes so close together could be seen as so hot.

Then I watched him films.

meganorks · 08/01/2014 16:06

What's with all the staring though? Had seen it before but all I could remember was the staring! Found it too off-putting to fancy him. But good film.

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 08/01/2014 16:16

If YABU then so am I....not so keen on the film but love RG. I liked his character in Crazy, Stupid, Love, made a change from the mood, pouty look.

I wouldn't kick him out of bed for farting. And apparently Eva Mendes and him have now broke up, I'm expecting my phone to ring any minute now Grin

Beachcomber · 08/01/2014 16:16

Yes to Blue Valentine being very good. Love Michelle Williams.

The lift scene in Drive is pretty genius. He kisses her knowing that what he is going to do next will make her hate/be afraid of him but he doesn't have any choice. The protective way he sort of pushes her in the corner protectively and the way time slows down and the light changes is very effective. Still a poncy film though.

Beachcomber · 08/01/2014 16:21

The Place Beyond The Pines is pretty good too (same director as Blue Valentine I think).

After watching it, I watched Silver Linings Playbook which has Bradley Cooper as the lead (he is in Pines), and it is great. Sarah Lawrence is fab in it too.

Beachcomber · 08/01/2014 16:28

Jennifer Lawrence even!

BlingBang · 08/01/2014 17:52

Beachcomber - he could have disarmed/killed the guy in the lift without he necessarily turning against him as he was saving her life. The OTT and psychopathic violence he used even with ther watching took it somewhere else. Was an interesting scene and I think the first clue that he was seriously damaged rather than just some schmuck in over his head and fighting for his life.

MrsGoslingWannabe · 08/01/2014 18:18

Lula & schilke you both sound like me, I can't stand violent scenes either & as a rule don't watch 18s but this film caught my attention. I had to look away during the horrible bits but it was still horrible listening to the lift scene.

Gonna watch Blue Valentine or Only God Forgives tonight Smile

DeadMansBones · 08/01/2014 19:07

I haven't seen only god forgives yet but it supposed to be very very violent.

Blue Valentine is fab you will fall head over heels in love with him in that.

Kundry · 08/01/2014 20:11

We watched it on Friday as well. I wasn't sure if Ryan Gosling was a very subtle compelling and charismatic actor or an actor with extremely limited range who was covering it up by being phenomenally pretty (another example - Keanu Reeves).

DH assures me it was the later and the film was drivel with art house pretensions Confused.

ohmymimi · 08/01/2014 20:29

Gosh, Bunny , are you Mark Kermode? If you are, pleeeease get a new hairstyle. Smile

ohmymimi · 08/01/2014 20:33

Agree with you about 'Badlands', by the way, Bunny.

BunnyLebowski · 08/01/2014 20:33

I'm not ohmy but I'll take that as a compliment Grin .
