To just want to call people by their names?

Geckos48 · 06/01/2014 08:49

Okay I know a group of women who, though I speak to very few of them, wish to be called by their 'fairy' names

One of them who I am stil in contact with, is insisting that I call her by (an obviously made up) name that she has chosen for herself.

I find this hard for a number of reasons;

  1. I don't think of her as a 'pixie' or a 'fairy' or whatever so when I am talking to her it is natural to call her by the name I have know her by for around 10 years.
  1. I don't know that that this perpetual childlike image these women are portraying is necessarily something I want to support either directly or indirectly

3 I just think it's a bit weird (if I'm honest)

I had a conversation with her last night, which felt a bit tense to be honest and it came up that she wants me to call her bluebell or whatever the hell it is.

AIBU to just not do this? Knowing it will likely end whatever friendship we still have? We are very different people now, she gets her political views from Russell Brand and 'doesn't appreciate debate' so I've already had to hide her posts in Facebook just because I can't stand to see her writing about stuff she doesn't quite get and being unable to justify it in any way.

Also, we are all hurtling towards our thirties now, is rather disparaging at the dreams and ideas we have regarding buying our own property and instead focusing (still) on travelling and living in the moment

What happened to the fairies that turned milk sour and led travellers astray and stole children? Are they all in a council estate with a clapped out Fiesta in the yard?

meeps · 06/01/2014 14:07

Slightly gutted that this wasn't about the group of women I know that have kept this up for nigh on 20 years now.

DadOnIce · 06/01/2014 14:21

This is hilarious. I have nothing to add, except that I send a nod to Objection for the "Friends" reference.

mateysmum · 06/01/2014 14:22

For your own sanity OP - RUN, RUN as far and as fast as you can away from these nutters.

ADishBestEatenCold · 06/01/2014 14:26

Is this them?

www.facebook.com/pages/The-Seelie-Court-Faerie-Circus/199564930457?ref=stream

Presumably this is what they do for a living and have changed their names to enhance that. Not to my taste, but if someone chooses to completely change their name, then it would be churlish not to use their new name. If it's good enough for the Inland Revenue, then it should be good enough for you.

I do have to ask though _ have they had their ears surgically altered?

I have two fairie nn which I was known by growing up. Once I turned 29 I started asking friends, colleagues and relatives to drop this cute nn. Not outright demand they stopped immediately just a little 'I love that name but I'm nearly thirty now, do you think I would be taken more seriously/feel more adult if you could call me x every now and again please'

Now only my DH occasionally uses my fairy nn but no one else.

It's a bit weird to be reading it in reverse. Why would a grown woman want a cute fairy childlike nn?

Geckos48 · 06/01/2014 14:50

This basically sums up why I find it so deeply weird

My fairy name is Gentle Pepperfilter
What the hell, that sounds like a kitchen utensil not a fairy!

I knew people like that too OP. Note: Knew

winklewoman · 06/01/2014 14:54

My fairy name is
Gentle Heartfrost
She casts love spells. She lives in villages and even in bold city places. She can only be seen during the first snow of winter. She wears brightly coloured stripy clothes like a bee and has colourful cerise wings like a bright butterfly.

Actually I can often be seen lying on hot sunny beaches. Perhaps I should offer my expertise with love spells on the Relationship forum.

NigellasDealer · 06/01/2014 14:56

this Hollie McNish is very good isn't she? so true!!

Foxsticks · 06/01/2014 15:06

Ohhh I like my fairy name - Ember Moontree. Not keen on living in some sort of insect den of iniquity though - "Shelives where fireflies mate and breed."

QueenArseClangers · 06/01/2014 15:10

That link sums it up nicely Geckos48. Thanks.

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/01/2014 15:19

So happy I found this thread.

My fairy name is
Petal Jupiterdancer
She is mysterious and secretive.
She lives in gardens and parks where almond trees and roses grow.
Shecan only be seen when the bees swarm and the crickets chirrup.
She wears soft pale pink and yellow petals and has deep mauve butterfly wings.

BettyMacdonald · 06/01/2014 15:22

According to the fairy / faerie name generator thing I'm Olive Oakshimmer. Bollocks to that. I'm choosing my own non twee name. Henceforth I shall be Faerie FanjoShimmer realises sounds somewhat like a new brand of vagisil

steff13 · 06/01/2014 15:38

My fairy name is Cherry Silverdancer.

She protects people from ghosts and demons. She lives in fruit orchards and vineyards. She can only be seen when the bees swarm and the crickets chirrup. She wears red, cerise and purple berry colors and has shimmering translucent wings like a cicada.

Hmm, I quite like it. Much more fun than my real name and my real job.

thisismyYuleTimenickname · 06/01/2014 15:41

I like my pirate name better - Black Death Brandy.

I can't stand twee things.
One of those adult fairy women I knew was young and married to a much older man. He was a business man and thought that this fae stuff was a good trend that would make him a lot of money. He treated his young sweet fairy wife too much like a child and a servant. In hindsight, I hope she is okay.

DawnOfTheDee · 06/01/2014 15:56

Oooh I am "Chanter Icewand"

She protects the vulnerable and brings justice to the wronged.
She lives in church yards and places of the dead (nice....sounds a bit gothy)
She can only be seen when the seeker holds a four-leafed clover.
She wears silver skirts and white feather down and has icy blue butterfly wings.

ADishBestEatenCold · 06/01/2014 16:39

I did like your 'Holly McNish' link Geckos48 however, while I do agree with a lot of the things 'Holly McNish' says, I do have to say I now "don't get it".

I do understand that it would be embarrassing and even irritating to feel forced to call someone by a pretend name, which wasn't generally used by that friend in 'real-life'. A bit contrived and schoolgirlish, to say the least.

However, if I am correct in thinking your friend is part of 'The Seelie Court Faerie Circus (formerly Theatre)' then is her name-change not part and parcel of how she earns a living? A bit like a celebrity picking a stage-name and then becoming generally known by that name in all aspects of their life.

Actually earning a living by adopting a persona (be it as clown or faerie in a theate or festival circus troupe or even be it as a pop star) is very different to the issues raised by Holly McNish.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Geckos48 · 06/01/2014 17:14

Because for me, being a children entertainer and calling yourself a stage name is very different to a grown woman living her life as a 5 year old girl would.

One I think is fairly reasonable, all for children's entertainers, but someone who is actually pretending to be a faery all day and be 'naughty and sweet and sexy and fun'. It is just cashing in on this stereotypical idea that women should 'stay' sweet and innocent and giggly.

When actually I think that growing up is far more exciting.

OP posts:
Geckos48 · 06/01/2014 17:20

If a celebrity chose to call themselves by a child's name and dress up like children do I would be loathed to call them that name either.

=D I am Gossamer Moonwand BUT in 5 months, I will magically transform into Bracken Vinespider which sounds strangely cool. I think I will tell all my tutors at uni I changed my name so that when I graduate I will be Bracken Vinespider LLB, LPC, LLM. Preferably, eventually, The Right Honourable Lady Bracken Vinespider.

I know you would all totally have me represent you in court!
