Crowned Adolf Hitler

helloeverything · 04/01/2014 16:28

At the inlaws over christmas we played the rizla game, writing a character for everyone to guess on their crown out of a cracker.
FIL chose Adolf Hitler as my character to guess. BIL and SIL were suitably horrified, and i laughed it off when i guessed correctly, but afterwards felt really upset.

DH said that it was a typical schoolboy joke of his generation - i feel pissed off, since i know FIL thinks i'm too strict with Dc and assertive on the whole.

What do you think?

It's not really funny, is it? He was probably just being silly, but I would have probably taken it as a slight...

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 04/01/2014 16:30

I wouldn't be upset enough to post on MN about it, nor even give it another thought.

justabigdisco · 04/01/2014 16:30

What exactly were you upset about? It was a game, no?

Disco - he chose it especially for me. It was a joke - but a very pointed one.
I'm happy to be told to lighten up...

Adolf Hitler was a person who existed, though - and is someone who shouldn't be forgotten, so history isn't repeated.

He could have chosen Pol Pot or Idi Amin, but they would have been harder to guess.

I think you are over reacting slightly.

BlackDaisies · 04/01/2014 16:36

It sounds like he doesn't like you very much. It's very pointed. I'm not sure how I'd handle it though, which isn't very helpful, sorry. What do you want to happen - do you want an apology? Maybe talk more to your dh and tell him again how hurtful you found it.

LynetteScavo · 04/01/2014 16:36

Oh, he is likening you to Adolf Hitler?

In that case I guess he was being a twat, and had drunk too much wine with lunch.

puzzleduck · 04/01/2014 16:37

Mountain.....molehill

Unless there are particular sensitivities (ie you were Jewish for example), I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 04/01/2014 16:37

If the point of the game was to decide a person who the player resembled then i would be upset but if it was just picking famous people to guess then no issue.

BlackDaisies · 04/01/2014 16:39

I can see exactly why you are upset - I don't think it's funny to be compared to Adolf Hitler. It's one of those "jokes" which is actually hiding (badly) a nasty little dig - but where if you complain you're told you "don't have a sense of humour".

Piscivorus · 04/01/2014 16:40

It is hurtful even though you know it is silly but there is nothing you can do other than put it to one side but never forget

My very precocious nephew (aged 8) made me Susan Boyle, much to the amusement of himself and his overindulgent parents, everyone else was either Hmm or Shock. At some point I will have my revenge!

BrownSauceSandwich · 04/01/2014 16:40

Are you upset at being reminded that Hitler existed, or do you suspect a dig at you being a bit of a dictator (or genocidal maniac Shock)?

If the former, get over it. If the latter, laugh it off. If the cap fits, throwing a bossy fit over it isn't going to make you look any better. And if it's unjustified, it's your FIL who looks an idiot, not you.

helloeverything · 04/01/2014 16:41

Lynette, he's a teetotaller, but yes he probably thought he was being a bit cheeky.
I think he resents me stealing away his pfb, and always seems to be simmering with resentment.
I don't want an apology, i just don't want to hang out with him all that much.

BrownSauceSandwich · 04/01/2014 16:41

Hah, hissy fit, not bossy fit!

Ubik1 · 04/01/2014 16:42

Salmotrutta · 04/01/2014 16:59

Yes, what was wrong with being Susan Boyle Piscivorous?

Salmotrutta · 04/01/2014 17:00

Oh, and yes - BrownSauce says it all perfectly OP.

HoobleDooble · 04/01/2014 17:05

We played this game at my in-laws on Boxing Day, someone gave my sil Rolf Harris to guess. Maybe I need to phone her and let her know she should be horrified as we all obviously think she's an all edged kiddy-fiddler ... Or maybe it was just a game we were playing.

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 04/01/2014 17:07

I thought this game was just about choosing a random person, not one who's likened to anyone?
