Is it just me?

Or are Thornton's chocolates sickly and vile now?

I've thought that, too. I don't think it's because I've had too much chocolate, either...they are just not that nice anymore!

Quoteunquote · 31/12/2013 17:43

Nearly all chocolate seems to be grim nowadays, our local farmer's market there seems to be a lot of chocolate stalls, must be because all the shop stuff tastes like it's been made in the USA.

I keep meaning to start a thread to ask if there are any products that are still original recipe, as I no longer buy most old favourites.

carabos · 31/12/2013 17:45

Thorntons are definitely not the treat they once were...

thornrose · 31/12/2013 17:45

I find most chocolates make me feel sickly. I thought it was me!

SecretNutellaFix · 31/12/2013 17:47

They aren't as nice as they used to be,

WelshMaenad · 31/12/2013 17:47

YANBU, I have a huge box sitting around that has barely been touched, and I LOVE chocolate!

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 31/12/2013 17:48

MIL was given a huge box last week. They were no different to Roses really. I was going to start a thread like this.

Farrowandbawlbauls · 31/12/2013 17:51

Thorntons
Cadbury
Quality Street
Roses
Galaxy

They all taste the same, bitty and greasy.

I like Hotel Chocolat but not enough to pay their prices.

Fairylea · 31/12/2013 17:53

I agree. I remember when Thorntons shops were quite a posh place to buy chocolate, now you might as well just buy galaxy or whatever. Not nice! :(

RandyRudolf · 31/12/2013 17:53

It's all chocolate, that's all that matters to me, I wouldn't turn my nose up to any of it!

inkyfingers · 31/12/2013 17:54

Lindt and Hotel Chocolat every time. Forget the rest.

wowfudge · 31/12/2013 17:57

I've found Thorntons very sweet the past couple of years. Agree with inkyfingers!

Farrowandbawlbauls · 31/12/2013 18:00

Yes Lindt. Expensive for what it is but worth it.

twofingerstoGideon · 31/12/2013 18:02

So glad it's not just me! They've been 'half price' in almost every supermarket recently and have definitely lost that slight 'exclusivity' they had when you had to actually go to one of their own shops to buy them. I'm sure they're mass produced by some Unilever-like conglomerate now!
Farrow is right about the grittiness.
I love Hotel Chocolat and would rather have six of their chocolates than a massive box of the more mainstream makes.

MummyPig24 · 31/12/2013 18:02

Thorntons are foul. Didn't think much of roses this year. Haven't been lucky enough to try any others yet.

Topseyt · 31/12/2013 18:03

They have all gone downhill in the last few years. I used to love Thorntons, Dairy Milk and Cadbury's (now American owned, isn't it), but much less so now. I have two unopened boxes which have been sitting there since Christmas Day, and that is unheard of in this house. They will be eaten in the near future, but none of us is quite as fussed as we used to be.

Give me a packet of chocolate brazil nuts any day, though our local shop has sadly stopped stocking them (probably a good thing for my figure though).

Joysmum · 31/12/2013 18:03

I thought it was just me. Yes, Thirntons has gone cheap and nasty IMO. Love Lindt. Love Ferraro Rochet (sp? I eat em so quick I don't look at the packaging)

Farrowandbawlbauls · 31/12/2013 18:05

Gritty! That's the word I was trying to think of.

Thorntons have been halfprice in their shops for months now..IIRC they were in trouble not that long ago and were bought out/rescued. Maybe they are in trouble or close to it again.

The only Throntons chocolate I can eat is their orange and cardamon one, but even that is loosing it's edge.

thornrose · 31/12/2013 18:05

I just assumed my tastes had changed as I aged Sad

I was given some giant chocolate buttons from M&S in a Christmas tin. They taste surprisingly good!

Farrowandbawlbauls · 31/12/2013 18:06

We've had M&S this year too - their chocolate isn't bad at all.

twofingerstoGideon · 31/12/2013 18:07

M&S box of marzipan chocolates was very pleasant indeed!

ExcuseTypos · 31/12/2013 18:08

I do wonder if its my taste that has changed or the quality of the chocolates. They all taste a bit boring and sickly don't they?

littlemisssarcastic · 31/12/2013 18:10

Another one for Lindt. The best tasting chocolate ever. Fact!! Grin

thornrose · 31/12/2013 18:11

I haven't had Bendicks for a while, I used to love them. I might give them a try to test my theory Grin

SofaKing · 31/12/2013 18:13

I believe last year a European trader bought up most of the cocoa futures, and I remember a warning at the time that chocolate would be more expensive and poorer quality as a result of one organisation having a monopoly, and the consequent price increase.

Unfortunately that seems true, I have a very sweet tooth and find the cost of chocolate has risen a great deal, and the quality of chocolate, Cadburys especially, has fallen.

Never mind, I'm going on a diet on the sixth so by the end of January most chocolate producers will have collapsed due to loss of income Xmas Grin
