Or are Thornton's chocolates sickly and vile now?

I was just having this conversation with my (French) Dp the other day - he thinks all UK chocolate is rubbish - and he used Thorntons as an example.
I said I didn't think they were as good as they used to be. I remember going into the shop as a special treat -must be over 30 yrs ago (god I'm old ) and buying a bag of misshapes and they were expensive but fantastic - coffee truffles and one with a walnut (?) were my favourites. The truffles tasted like homemade ones ... we used to buy my mum a box for Christmas ...and know it was a luxury.
They really aren't that special anymore - even from the shop - think they might have shot themselves in the foot really - not only the supermarkets - the reindeer/santa were half price in matalan before christmas -hardly exclusive...
I did say maybe our memory of things might not match the reality ...but still Thorntons are rubbish now!

Twattyzombiebollocks · 31/12/2013 18:24

Thorntons chocs have gone down the pan since they started to be available in supermarkets IMO. I used to really look forward to my box of Viennese truffles my mum used to buy me annually for Christmas, last year and this year I have eaten a couple and then left them for the kids!

M&S and Waitrose chocolates have come up trumps in our house this year.

I was given a tin of the Spanish Valor chocolates as a gift and they were lovely.

All the main stream chocolate brands have gone downhill, they have less cocoa solids and more fat in them.

I agree with you. I wouldn't give anything for Thorntons chocolate now. They taste completely different.

I've just had a look online and apparently they changed oil to palm oil - that could be something to do with it.

I know palm oil is seen as a very cheap alternative in cooking but beware if you're allergic to nuts. A friend of mine lost her child to this oil.

Farrowandbawlbauls · 31/12/2013 18:49

Harvesting Palm Oil is also resonsible for most of the Orangutans loosing their habitat in the jungle.

Mmm, Hotel Chocolate in London Bridge were selling off their Christmas chocolates at half price this weekend. May still have them.

Dinnaeknowshitfromclay · 31/12/2013 18:56

Thorntons choc is ok if it is in a thin layer (if it's coating their toffee for example). When it is in a lump it tastes cheap and feels oily in the mouth IMHO. I was disappointed by it and probably won't bother again. I quite like the 30p bars of ASDA own. Better value for money but I've put on three kilos since Christmas Eve so am going to leave it all alone for a while anyways...:(

I've always thought that. Never liked them. More of a Cadbury girl myself

drinkyourmilk · 31/12/2013 19:00

M&s chocolate is lovely at the moment. Have refused to eat all the other chocolate. Such a waste!

weirdthing · 31/12/2013 19:02

Interesting thread. I have always been a total chocoholic, especially for Cadbury's. Recently, I've been gutted to find chocolate increasingly unpalatable - just tasting like sweet grease in my mouth. It may be worth going without everyday chocolate and just having Hotel Chocolate occasionally as a treat.

MrsCampbellBlack · 31/12/2013 19:04

Thorntons chocolates are vile.

I am addicted to lindt dark chocolate with sea salt.

fairisleknitter · 31/12/2013 19:13

I think Cadbury has got worse recently and Thorntons used to be lovely but have changed out of all recognition.

Aldi is where I buy chocolate now.

PicaK · 31/12/2013 19:14

I have to say Lindt has suddenly seemed delicious and cadbury's far too sweet but I assumed that was an age thing.

It feels like both cadbury and Thornton's are desperate to reduce the cocoa content in their chocolate just to save money. Depressing.

I noticed lots of Cadbury selection boxes left over at our supermarket. A bad Christmas perhaps.

MagratGarlik · 31/12/2013 19:23

Aldi has nice chocolate. I had (twelve) lovely boxes of chocolate for Christmas. The Aldi ones were definitely the nicest so far.

Disclaimer: I have not tried or eaten all 12 boxes yet!

sandalsinthebin · 31/12/2013 19:24

Chocolate has changed! Cadbury's creme eggs used to have a big chunky chocolate egg-end; and walnut whips used to have a big chunky chocolate base with a walnut stuck in it; and revels had peanuts with a chunky chocolate end.......I have more examples of chunky end-pieces now sadly gone and very much missed

Justforlaughs · 31/12/2013 19:27

I still like Quality Street (mainly because of the number of toffees), Boxes of expensive Thortons are ok, but the cheaper boxes (always "half price" to £6 for an enormous box) are shit. I even got a bit fed up of Hotel Chocolat after getting a box delivered every month for over a year. Nice as a treat though.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 31/12/2013 19:29

I used to really like Thorntons, but agree that they're quite sickly now.

However...

I got a Mint Collection box from Tesco for £2 this week. Well, that's not to be sniffed at is it? And they were bloody lovely - I think that the mint was a great counterbalance to the actual chocolate.
