Sorry Mail link

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2531093/I-feel-like-not-body-anymore-Vegetarians-outrage-going-Nandos-served-chicken-mistake.html

She asked for grilled halloumi cheese pitta and was served chicken. Which she ate half and didn't realise as she was talking to her friend.

She tried to make herself sick and had to sent home from work the next day as she was so upset and feels her body is not her own anymore.

How you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between cheese and chicken is a little beyond me. The cheese would be gooey and runny and chicken would have chewy - and they both have completely difference tastes??

It doesn't mention this in the article but the server always comes over and says - "chicken burger with medium sauce" etc so surely they probably said chicken pitta to her too??

But maybe iabu because she has never had meat before for religious reasons.

Hindus are vegetarian so saying you have no time for vegetarians is like saying you have no time for any Hindus.

So yes, borderline racist in my opinion. Not out and out racist cuntishness but borderline racist.

JohnnyBarthes · 30/12/2013 16:02

I bore myself with this, but vegetarians really shouldn't be eating dairy products at all, unless they keep their own cows and maintain herds of ornamental bulls rather than slaughtering them.

ItsIgginningToLookALotLikeXmas · 30/12/2013 16:03

The hallow I in my fridge is vegetarian. It is my understanding that Parmesan is always made with animal rennet though.

JohnnyBarthes · 30/12/2013 16:03

Not all Hindus are vegetarian.

ItsIgginningToLookALotLikeXmas · 30/12/2013 16:03

Hallow I = halloumi

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 16:04

'vegetarians always look old'

Some of us are. Grin

Like smokers and gym bunnies past the age of 35 and grumpy people, and the stressed-out.

bruffin · 30/12/2013 16:04

If he is hindu then there is a very high chance he is dairy intolerant which is why he was sick, not because he was not used to it.

perplexedpirate · 30/12/2013 16:04

No they don't, Nancy. That's incorrect.
I've been vegetarian 15 years and got ID-ed the other day (am 36).

grumpyoldbat · 30/12/2013 16:05

I think she over reacted too. It's not a lack of empathy either imo.

The way I see it being upset at the time, feeling sick at the time, complaining at the time all perfectly reasonable and understandable. Getting sent home from work the next day (I'd be disciplined if I asked to be sent home for that), going to the press and claiming her body is now forever not her own are massive over reactions.

miaowmix · 30/12/2013 16:05

I like her necklace . Yes she looks way older than her years. I always think fish/meat-eaters look healthier, have better skin etc.

Nancy66 · 30/12/2013 16:06

I was just being mischievous about them looking old - I'm sure they don't. Do seem to be ill a lot though (that's based on the two I know so not a conclusive study, I admit)

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 16:07

Less cancer and obesity in our mob though.

BackOnlyBriefly · 30/12/2013 16:09

I think there are two reasons why you shouldn't eat human meat. One is that you can catch just about every disease another human has. I think one reason pork was considered risky is that we can catch many of their diseases too.

The main reason though is how long would that difficult MIL last if putting her in the stew was an option. Grin

And never mind people saying LTB they'd be saying cook him instead.

Procrastinating · 30/12/2013 16:11

You might be right sometimes about the looking old thing Nancy, I have known a few people whose vegetarianism was part of an eating disorder. That makes people look old and get ill.

I think publicity for this case is a good thing (although admittedly I haven't read the article), not much has changed for vegetarians eating out in mainstream places for a long time. It is time there was actual choice and proper understanding.

Jolleigh · 30/12/2013 16:14

Really silver? I've met and fed loads of fat veggies. I'm actually trying to work out if I know a thin one now...

perlona · 30/12/2013 16:16

yabu, I'd be disgusted, sickened and probably traumatised if I unwittingly ate human flesh, many vegetarians see little difference between humans and living creatures so I can understand why she's so distressed.

PeazlyPops · 30/12/2013 16:16

vegetarians always look old

None that I know. Vegetarians are just like anyone else.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2013 16:16

I know loads of fat vegetarians silver Confused

JohnnyBarthes · 30/12/2013 16:16

I know fat ones and thin ones. The fat ones tend to live on great slabs of cheese and carbs, the skinny ones on wheat grass vapour and yoga.

RandyRudolf · 30/12/2013 16:18

Confused
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/12/2013 16:19

Yoh Nancy I'm 47yo and I've been a vegetarian since I was 14 (the no meat/fish or chicken type)
I look blardy lovely and people always think I'm in my mid 30s. (Admittedly most of these people are older and wear glasses but Hey Gift Horse 'n all that Blush . Not ageist but I work with mainly older people)

WRT the story- I wouldn't go to Nandos for the reason that I'm a vegetarian and they are Nandos Chicken .
Clue in the name there.

openerofjars · 30/12/2013 16:19

You can get a neurological disease similar to BSE, called Kuru, from eating people. Apparently it was a problem in Papua New Guinea.

Also, we taste terrible with piri-piri sauce, so not worth the hassle.

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 16:20

I know lots of fat carnivores and omnivores too.
Maybe we should just accept that it's hard to tell if someone is a vegetarian by their appearance.

ViviPru · 30/12/2013 16:20

Yes exactly the same thing happened to me too, in Stockholm at the Östermalm Food Hall (la-di-da). It was pretty horrendous - I ate half the wrap before I realised. I hadn't eaten meat for around 22 years when it happened.

I was emotionally upset, felt physically sick for a long time after and it still troubles me to think of it now, years after. And yet I was polite to the vendors who had made this mistake and were mortified. No-one could undo what had happened and to me, making a bigger fuss out of it would just have exacerbated the problem.

I agree, hers was a massive overreaction.

Jolleigh · 30/12/2013 16:20

Bet we go well with apple sauce though.
