Sorry Mail link

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2531093/I-feel-like-not-body-anymore-Vegetarians-outrage-going-Nandos-served-chicken-mistake.html

She asked for grilled halloumi cheese pitta and was served chicken. Which she ate half and didn't realise as she was talking to her friend.

She tried to make herself sick and had to sent home from work the next day as she was so upset and feels her body is not her own anymore.

How you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between cheese and chicken is a little beyond me. The cheese would be gooey and runny and chicken would have chewy - and they both have completely difference tastes??

It doesn't mention this in the article but the server always comes over and says - "chicken burger with medium sauce" etc so surely they probably said chicken pitta to her too??

But maybe iabu because she has never had meat before for religious reasons.

It's a statement of fact nando don't sell human flesh, they do sell chicken
Nando don't sell cat/dog flesh, they do sell chicken.
In no circumstance would one be served human/cat/dog.in unfortunate circumstance one could be served chicken

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 31/12/2013 23:26

another not sure people are grasping the whole comparison thing

Or rather I think they are, and are just ignoring it

scottishmummy · 31/12/2013 23:30

On the contrary I get it,it's just not useful or adding anything
One isn't going to eat human, cat,or dog in nando
One may inadvertently be served chicken,as In fact has happened to this lady

summersblue · 01/01/2014 21:34

There is absolutely zero chance that vegetarians eating in Nandos have not eaten animal by-products.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I bet she's accidentally eaten meat when eating out at least once before without realising it.

BeCool · 01/01/2014 23:18

I brought some halloumi today Grin

timidviper · 01/01/2014 23:22

I think her religious principles are surpassed only by the possibility of a nice payout from Nandos!

deakymom · 02/01/2014 23:20

ive always found halloumi to be squeaky on my teeth does that happen to everyone? i would have noticed sooner if my food wasn't squeaking

im sure its upsetting but not the end of the world?

mind you the reaction of my daughter when she found out there might have been horse-meat in her school meals was pretty similar (she went vegetarian for school purposes)

But ask for a burger and you may get horse.

Anyway scottishmummy I though you lived by the mantra trust nae fucker GrinGrin. Nearly peed myself when that came up on another thread earlier today. Love it!

Fakebook · 02/01/2014 23:32

Why would a vegetarian go and eat in Nandos of all places?! Like what would a vegetarian eat at KFC? Weird.

Thants · 03/01/2014 07:38

Fakebook. Because Nandos serve 4 different vegetarian main meals, starters and sides. They clearly want vegetarians to eat there!
KFC on the other hand serve no vegetarian food. So vegetarians generally don't go there.

JapaneseMargaret · 03/01/2014 07:42

But Nandos is a chicken restaurant. Chicken is their business.

There is something slightly pffft about someone who is so hysterically vegetarian that they'd go to the press about something like this, eating at a chicken restaurant. Why would you patronise such a place, if you felt THAT strongly that animal flesh is an abomination?

I can't take her even remotely seriously.

nkf · 03/01/2014 07:42

How did she not notice it was chicken? Halloumi tastes nothing like chicken. Was she pissed?

LadyIsabellasHollyWreath · 03/01/2014 07:43

And their vegetarian options are quite tasty and well thought out rather than just a ghastly "veggie burger".

Fakebook · 03/01/2014 11:07

But wouldn't going to a restaurant that serves chicken as their speciality be against everything vegetarians stand for? I just find it really two faced. On one hand you don't want animals to die or whatever but you're happy to go there and eat their vege options and fund their chicken killing business.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/01/2014 11:11

But veggies/vegans usually have omni friends/family. Surely it makes sense to eat somewhere that suits everybody! And Nandos veggie options are actually pretty good.

nkf · 03/01/2014 11:14

I love the idea of lacy thongs under those pinnies. Farmer chic.

nkf · 03/01/2014 11:14

Totally wrong thread.

hopskipandthump · 03/01/2014 11:26

I think this is a very unpleasant, discriminatory and smug thing to say. I have two coeliac children. Every time we go out to a restaurant there is a risk of cross-contamination. We only eat in restaurants that can offer a reliable gluten-free option and we make sure that the staff are well aware that it must be carefully cooked/served. Actually, Nandos is one of those - it was the first restaurant we ate in after DS1's diagnosis, and it was an amazing experience to eat out as a family once again.

I suppose you think my children should never eat in a restaurant that serves gluten? (Clue: that's every restaurant in the country). If someone orders a gluten-free / vegetarian / nut-free etc. etc. option then they have the right to expect their food will be exactly that - and that sensible precautions against contamination will be taken. By the way, you can't tell by the look/taste of a dish whether gluten is in it.

My children have not yet been served gluten-containing or gluten-contaminated food in a restaurant. If it happened, they would be violently ill, possibly for several days if it was a large amount. It may happen one day, and if it does, I shall be extremely cross and will follow it up with a strong complaint - if only to ensure that whatever mistake was made is not repeated on someone else. I certainly won't be blaming my child or myself for going to a restaurant that offers gluten-free options.

Thants · 03/01/2014 14:01

Fakebook. Nandos is no different to anywhere that sells meat. We don't love in a vaccum it is impossible to only shop and eat at vegetarian only places because simply not many exist! Eating veg food and Nandos is no different from buying vegetarian food at Tesco. Most vegetarians and vegans have friends and family who are not too!

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 03/01/2014 15:32

Agree thants

I would love to know where the many vegetarian restaurants are in my area. Then that way all my meat eating friends and family can come alog with me.....ooh that will make my next work do very interesting

wyldchyld · 04/01/2014 20:51

I once accidentally served a Muslim friend bacon. She'd given me a load of chicken she said needed using for a dinner party we were having (later found out it was halal and all the meat she would eat) and I cooked it in a cream sauce with tiny pieces of shredded bacon, veggies etc. She said it was the nicest thing she'd ever eaten - it never occurred to me she was a strict follower because she drank / had sex with her atheist boyfriend etc. Suffice to say I never told her.

Moral of that is, tbh, she will almost certainly have eaten meat previously. I can understand and sympathise with her as it shouldn't have happened - apparently staff misread her order. Unfortunately, accidents do happen - but, as someone else said, if they misread it, then she must have not been listening when they told her what it was when they brought the order.

The stand out quote - Nothing can compensate me for those 28 years - however, makes me pretty certain she's doing it for the money. Nandos apologised, gave her a free meal and vouchers - it was an honest mistake. This is her wanting money.

RandyRudolf · 04/01/2014 20:56

But wouldn't going to a restaurant that serves chicken as their speciality be against everything vegetarians stand for?

What do Vegetarians stand for?

BeCool · 05/01/2014 21:52

nfk even if she was pissed (and if she was so what?) how would someone who's never eaten meat know what chicken tastes like?

AmberLeaf · 06/01/2014 09:37

hopskipandthump

It wasn't my comment you were replying to, but I have to say I think your reply is OTT.

Being a vegetarian is an ethical/religious choice

Being a coeliac obviously isn't a choice, so I very much doubt that poster you were replying to thinks that your child should never eat in a restaurant.

My step Mum is a coeliac and is very careful about where she eats as cross contamination is very common.

AmberLeaf · 06/01/2014 09:38

how would someone who's never eaten meat know what chicken tastes like?

Its more about texture than taste IMO.
