Sorry Mail link

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2531093/I-feel-like-not-body-anymore-Vegetarians-outrage-going-Nandos-served-chicken-mistake.html

She asked for grilled halloumi cheese pitta and was served chicken. Which she ate half and didn't realise as she was talking to her friend.

She tried to make herself sick and had to sent home from work the next day as she was so upset and feels her body is not her own anymore.

How you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between cheese and chicken is a little beyond me. The cheese would be gooey and runny and chicken would have chewy - and they both have completely difference tastes??

It doesn't mention this in the article but the server always comes over and says - "chicken burger with medium sauce" etc so surely they probably said chicken pitta to her too??

But maybe iabu because she has never had meat before for religious reasons.

No sympathy whatsoever for vegetarians.

HSMMaCM · 30/12/2013 15:21

I wouldn't necessarily spot chicken if I was expecting haloumi and I would feel ill if I discovered I had eaten meat. I probably wouldn't need time off work though!

To those complaining about veggies going to a chicken restaurant, should we also avoid carveries, burger joints, all day breakfast establishments, etc and generally not eat out with our families?

RandyRudolf · 30/12/2013 15:22

That's kind of you AKAK81 Hmm

musicboxwoundbyakey · 30/12/2013 15:22

He was violently sick. It was definitely psychological and he felt awful all day.

I can completely understand that. I don't think she was unreasonable to try and make herself sick either and I do understand when she said her choice was taken away - like your DH's was.

I just don't think he or a majority of people would have the next day off work or contact the media about it.

"No sympathy for vegetarians"

Did you mean to be so rude Akak.?

Stunningly lacking in empathy there. Hmm

BackOnlyBriefly · 30/12/2013 15:23

If you live in a world where eating meat is normal then mistakes will happen. The only way to be sure is to cook everything yourself.

As for the level of upset it all depends on your reasons for being vegetarian.

If you chose not to eat meat because you thought it better for the planet generally than just the once would do no harm. If you had been brought up to believe meat eating was like cannibalism then of course you'd be devastated. But someone that extreme really shouldn't be eating food prepared by others.

Religion is another reason, but again if you think it's that important, if you think the creator of the universe is going to be dreadfully upset then it is careless to eat food cooked by strangers who don't feel the same way.

Methe · 30/12/2013 15:23

We you might not know what chicken tastes like if you've not eaten or for years but presumably you would know what haloumi tastes and, looks, and squeaks like.

If you eat half a meal without noticing it's not what it's supposed to be then you need to slow down and look at what your eating!

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2013 15:23

Yanbu.

RandyRudolf · 30/12/2013 15:23

SHE HAD NEVER EATEN CHICKEN BEFORE SO WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT CHICKEN TASTED LIKE

That's for those who keep insisting she's an idiot for not knowing the difference.

Feminine · 30/12/2013 15:23

I know it not popular on MN to say this, but the lady needs to get a grip.

There are far worse things happening every day.

She has been upset. She won't die from it.

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 15:24

Not asking for sympathy, just that she didn't get what she ordered and then felt sick about having eaten something that had been slaughtered. She has never eaten meat because she's a Hindu vegetarian.
That's pretty shitty IMO.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/12/2013 15:24

I'm a meat eater, bloody love it but at least I'm aware enough to know that the majority of the population of the world is vegetarian and that it is a better way environmentally.

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 15:26

Feminine, you could say exactly the same about 99% of the threads on MN though. Xmas Smile

musicboxwoundbyakey · 30/12/2013 15:26

I don't think people are necessarily saying that, I think they are just making the point that if you are going to have such a extreme reaction like that woman did then if you were her you would probably avoid places like Nandos because it is primarily a chicken restaurant and there could be cross contamination etc

Not that all vegetarians should avoid Nandos.

OP posts:
BackOnlyBriefly · 30/12/2013 15:28

Not really the point of the thread I know, but you have to kill plants to eat them.

I know people who would look at a carrot and then at a dear fluffy bunny rabbit gamboling in a field and think there's no comparison, but how about say shrimp or oysters.

PeazlyPops · 30/12/2013 15:28

Nandos make a big deal about no cross contamination between veggie food and meat, though.

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 15:29

I've never been to Nandos, or McD's or KFC either.
When in doubt, I eat cake.
Or salad.
Mostly cake though.

TwerkingNineToFive · 30/12/2013 15:29

YABU.
You don't know because you have not be in that situation. The taste of accidental meat has made me feel ill for months. It's obviously psychological but its still real.

RandyRudolf · 30/12/2013 15:30

You eat the fruit of the plant. The plant then re-grows the fruit... and so it goes on.

Nancy66 · 30/12/2013 15:30

Vegetarians who eat in non-vegetarian restaurants will be eating meat contaminated food. That's a given.

PeazlyPops · 30/12/2013 15:30

*Please note that Nando’s are not vegetarian restaurants, however we do take specific steps to segregate our non-meat products from our meat products as follows:

A segregated area of the grill is defined for the exclusive cooking of non-meat products
Separate utensils are always used with non-meat products
Separate bottles of the Nando’s bastes are used exclusively for basting the non-meat products*

From nandos website.

MarmaladeBatkins · 30/12/2013 15:30

I feel a bit bad for her.

I could just kill for a hot wing roulette now. Sad Sad

Feminine · 30/12/2013 15:30

Yes, you are right silver :)

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 15:32

Shrimp and oysters both have a basic nervous system, carrots don't.
I'd like to photosynthesise my nourishment, but I'm uncomfortable with gene-splicing.

RandyRudolf · 30/12/2013 15:32

All that hard work in the kitchen to avoid contamination and then they cock it up at the table.
