Do you know anyone in real life who votes for UKIP?

puddingsforsandy · 29/12/2013 22:15

And if so, do you judge them?

If you're a UKIP supporter yourself, are you happy to declare it in public/at work?

I haven't yet (well I think!) meet anyone who votes for this party. Someone from FB linked something from UKIP FB page disagreeing with it. This lead me to their page. The supporters of this party come across as thick (going by the FB page)

I can't believe this is the same party that was lead by that talk show host. Silk something.

Anyway that's my opinion but my questions above still stand.
Thanks.

just chucking it in there

LiegeAndLief · 12/04/2014 21:08

My MIL votes for UKIP. It is just one of the many things I judge her for.

On the other hand, I think she toyed with the idea of the BNP for a bit, so maybe UKIP isn't such a bad thing after all.

just chucking this out there

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/04/2014 00:06

Probably.

I don't know anybody who openly admits it but it stands to reason that I must know some who do. I know I few I would be surprised if they didn't at least vote UKIP, if not BNP. I do not interact with these people by choice, to be clear.

fayrae · 13/04/2014 00:13

What is wrong with voting UKIP? What have they done wrong? Who is it acceptable to vote for nowadays, anyway? The Greens?

caruthers · 13/04/2014 00:18

There is a hell of a lot of pearl clutching going on in this thread and very little evidence to show that UKIP are a bad bad party.

Some posters on here probably don't mix in the AHEM (Social circles) that are UKIP's natural catchment class.

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/04/2014 00:38

I could find a multitude of reasons to judge people for their political party of choice. Any and all of them.

I'd imagine I'm not alone in this. Probably why talking politics was considered impolite until fairly recently.

may I draw your attention to a spelling error?

I think you will find it should be spelled

Council estate born, me, in an area where racism seems to be as common as a cuppa. I moved, to an area where there is a far wider racial mix, and a smaller number of UKIP followers, even amongst the indigenous pop.

Interesting.

Dawndonnaagain · 14/04/2014 12:36

What is wrong with voting UKIP? What have they done wrong?
Nothing, yet. In my opinion it is wrong to discriminate and it is the party of discrimination. If they want to lock my kids away, which (until they hid it) they have said they want to do, then that is wrong. The way in which they approach immigration is wrong, stupid and economic suicide, as is leaving the EU. But heyho, if anyone is stupid enough to believe the immigration and EU myths, maybe they deserve a party of money grubbing idiots, unfortunately, the rest of us don't.

peggyundercrackers · 14/04/2014 12:53

i wouldnt judge them for voting UKIP but i would judge someone for voting lib-dems or for the green party.

HillyHolbrook · 14/04/2014 14:16

Future FIL does, I don't judge him for doing it but I judge him for not actually knowing what he's talking about.

He's the type to be a racist, totally unjust, judgemental twat, and then use big words to convince people he's so clever and clued up on politics. He isn't.

He put loads of UKIP stickers up in the window of his house and DP went in and tore them up saying we wouldn't be associated going into 'that' house on the street, and if FIL couldn't tell us exactly why he supported them other than 'cos of all't damn forriners in me country' then we wouldn't take him seriously. He couldn't.

caruthers · 14/04/2014 14:19

Walking into someone elses house and tearing up the stuff they've put up?

How rude is that ?

JuliaScurr · 14/04/2014 14:24

yes, my uncle. we always knew he was demented.

JennySense · 14/04/2014 14:26

My worry is about the standard of UKIP politicians [gays and floods?] as I am expecting them to benefit from a protest vote windfall.

JennySense · 14/04/2014 14:26

[as well as their policies of course!]

Viviennemary · 14/04/2014 14:33

I might vote UKIP. Don't know anyone else who intends to. And at least one person was horrified. In fact the more people tell me not to the more likely I am to vote for them.

HolidayCriminal · 14/04/2014 17:05

FAYRAE: "What have UKIP done wrong?"

In local politics, UKIP have opposed wind turbine construction widely, and in the case I know most about, spouting lies in published & widely distributed leaflets, associating with thugs & vandals with same agenda. The turbine we supported was a single edge of town community owned turbine proposal to be located behind a hideous ex-factory site. Would you like me to go into more detail?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 14/04/2014 19:32

I don't like or trust ANY of them and we're in that horrible position in the UK where we must vote for somebody or else our vote will go to the one leading votes. How crazy that is. Confused

How can anybody rant against any party whilst voting for another one. The best that can be said is that they are all as bad as each other and it's time there was some kind of revolution resulting in proportional representation so that we can vote for individual issues, not THIS. Hmm

Sad
alwayswaving · 14/04/2014 19:40

Yes my step father. He's far from stupid but he wants to keep England for English ppl. Doesn't understand that because the English attempted to colonise the world the people from those colonial countries still View. England as the mother country and think they'll be welcome And he hates the EU too. Not certain why but to do with Germany and bombs ... I can't even bear to speak to him because of his xenophobia, narrow mindedness and rubbish he re spouts from the Telegraph.. But he's in his 80s and won't be around for much longer.

Justanotherlurker · 14/04/2014 20:50

I know you won't believe me and frankly couldn't give a shit but I would never vote ukip in my life nor am I racists in the slightest but issues like this needs to be discussed

Birmingham schools
Until the main parties are willing to discuss the issues people have without resorting to belittle those concerns of being racist/bigots/not a genuine concern then unfortunately the right is going to gain more votes

junkfoodaddict · 14/04/2014 21:34

Sometimes people vote for a political party, not because they genuinely believe they are the better party to lead our country, but to give a sharp kick up the backside of the three main parties who seem to ignore our voice and don't actually represent and obviously fail/forgotten that that IS what they have been elected for.

I voted UKIP in the last local election. I have switched between Labour and Conservative during my presently short adult life. I voted them because I wanted to hurt the three main parties. Never did I believe that UKIP would win but when results were released, thousands of very local people obviously either think the same as me or do believe they are the party to lead. I don't have an opinion either way because I have yet to find a party whose manifesto fits perfectly with my own opinions and beliefs.

The last general election, I voted Conservatives. I swayed for a long time until voting day and I went with the party whose ideals closely resembled my own and who I believed was better for me personally and my family.

I was wrong.

Life under Labour was far better, even if I strongly disagreed with the immigration and benefit culture. Now, my life is far worse - higher living costs, worse working conditions (I am a teacher) and more stress. That's not to say I will vote Labour next time. I will do the same - listen, watch, think then vote for ME and MY FAMILY.

I have very little knowledge about UKIP otherthan what is reported in the media and let's face it, you cannot fully, 100% trust the media and many media companies are very much intertwined with political parties as it is! To some they seem racist, to others they are a party who want to look after the people who have paid into the country and want to limit the migration of others outside so as not to damage the lifestyle, well-being and prospects of those born and bred in the country. I am not saying one is right and the other is wrong.

But I won't vote UKIP in a main election. Mainly because I don't believe they have the means to lead a country and it is a party of such heated political divide in this country, it would cause more harm than good.

ForalltheSaints · 14/04/2014 21:51

Only one who has ever admitted it, there could be others as it is a secret ballot of course.

thebody · 14/04/2014 22:09

Mmm people often lie about who they vote for.

Op your comment 'the supporters sound thick' is precisely the type of arrogant attitude that allows people to think they are being patronised and ignored by the powers that be and go vote for parties like UKIP.

Do you remember the Gordon Brown debacle where he called a woman racist?

We need to listen to people's worries/fears and acknowledge them.

Governments need to govern for everyone not just the clever articulate, highly educated few.

If we patronise and write off people as racist/stupid/thick then they feel they have no alternative but to vote for these parties.
