"secretly filming the show for a terminally ill parent and a parent on active duty in Afghanistan (the filming was illegal but I felt the reasons justified the risk" - I applaud your sentiments and the filming can be seen as lovely for those two families.

But why was the filming illegal? And if it is for really solid reasons how can a single teacher justify making the decision in breaking those laws?

DameDoom · 30/12/2013 17:47

I never said the OP is unreasonable did I? I am just a bit of a bad back Nazi.

DameDoom · 30/12/2013 18:03

AsBright that is lovely. No teacher or even HT make these rules - it's normally the LA, but most people are sympathetic so there is leeway to do what is right. On the downside, while there are brave fathers doing their duty in places like Afghanistan, there are many wastrels bleating about their rights.

I once read an article which said that the schools can't legally enforce a ban on filming or taking photos as it isn't illegal to do so. They just let us think it is so we will comply. Does anyone know if this is true?

It's the little girl I feel sorry for in all this. The mum admits she was 'really excited' but still thought it was worth making a fuss that resulted in her daughter not taking part at all? Even if the girl did say that she didn't want to do it without her brother watching (which I doubt she did without it being 'suggested' to her tbh) then her mum should have persuaded her to do it for her sake, not to mention letting down her classmates.

her mum should have persuaded her to do it for her sake, not to mention letting down her classmates.

She doesn't sound like the sort of parent to pass on an opportunity to make life difficult for the staff. She won't have even considered the impact on her DD or the other children.

The granny should have taken the little boy to the dress rehearsal and then the mum could have gone to the adults only performance while her mum looked after the little boy.

One primary school where I used to live used to do plays at our secondary school. Babies and toddlers were banned but there was a crèche provided at the primary school about 10 mins walk away run by 2 teachers and several sixth formers (16-18 year olds). One mum was told she wasn't allowed to take her 2 week old baby in with her Shock. At the time I thought it was great (I was 17 and helping in the creche) as I got to cuddle a tiny baby for an hour but now I'm a mum myself I'm horrified.

I only caught a little glimpse of DS2 doing his play this year as I had to take DS3 and DS4 out into the corridor. If they weren't allowed in at all I couldn't have come as DS4 has complex SN and can only be looked after by me or DH.

Dame.

Your blue badge has been issued to you because of your pain and disability so life is not quite as hard as it would be made by walking long distances.

Its not doing you a lot of good gathering dust unused, please use it,its yours.

manicinsomniac · 31/12/2013 00:07

asbright - illegal in that we didn't have the filming rights. Same way as photocopying sheet music is illegal I guess.

Boaty · 31/12/2013 09:27

She should have checked with the school beforehand to clarify/explain and ask nicely if it would be ok.

Another Salisbury supporter here, I grew up on Bemerton Heath...I think I'm rather naice! Wink

It is a quiet place so they do need to fill up the Journal with something usually car ads if I remember correctly Is there still the advertiser too? waste of trees
I'm only an occasional visitor these days! Grin

Nanny0gg · 31/12/2013 10:45

(But why was the filming illegal?

Because of performing rights/copyright.

Most schools buy in plays these days and you have to get permission to video and they usually ask to have a copy sent to them as well.

sashh · 31/12/2013 11:55

I think any parent who gets to watch their child in a nativity is lucky. It is not a right it is a privilege.

The easiest thing for the school to do is just not do a play. Or do one with the infants that the rest of the school gets to watch.
