To think I must be a chav, as MN has deemed me so?

According to threads I've been reading lately, most things I do seem to be marking me (and my family) out as chavs.

I fed my children formula and jarred food - this is chavvy
My Mum likes cards that say Nanny and she sends relative-specific cards - chavvy
My children like to wear character clothing - chavvy
I shop at Tesco and sometimes even Asda - chavvy

AIBU to be a bit tired of seeing the word 'chav' on here lately? I've challenged it and said that it's offensive, but just get the 'well, it's only online, why are you bothered', as if that makes it ok.

Yes, I realise I'm being over-sensitive, but me and my family aren't 'chavs' and I'm tired of it being bandied about (along with 'common') to describe things that people see as beneath them.

But that isn't judging - someone gave an opinion, which is a daft one, but whatever really.

If someone had said 'yeah, yabu to ltb because of your stupid username' what would be one thing, but they haven't!

PacificDingbat · 23/12/2013 22:14

My point is, why should a number in my name have any bearing on what I actually post

It shouldn't, of course. You are totally right.
But in the same way as appearances matter in RL (when they shouldn't), they matter on fora/ums (never know what to put to not look like a twat, so I put both and look like a double-twat).
It's not fair and not right and it's one of those occasions where I am glad that I suffer from name-blindness (made-up condition which mean I cannot remember anybody's name to save my life).

You sound articulate and get your point across - pull the feckers up on their behaviour and don't let it spoil your day.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 23/12/2013 22:15

Well, I'm actually an ex-property owner who now privately rents and is into peace and love, maaaan.

So, not a chav, then?

I really don't know anymore Confused

Chav is thrown around here all the time.

Apparently using any other name than Grandma/grandmother is chavvy.

^that was my favourite as it meant my 92 year old great grandma was a chav Grin

I don't take any notice of half the bollocks people post here as I don't see or experience it in RL.

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 23/12/2013 22:16

exit pampas grass does not make you chavvy (it makes you a pervert)

That was a joke, I am not judging Grin

MurderOfGoths · 23/12/2013 22:16

Fandango Nah, grew up in Berkshire

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 23/12/2013 22:17

Isn't Pampas the sign of The Swingers? Grin

Heartbrokenmum73 · 23/12/2013 22:18

katherine - as a fellow 'k' name, I really expect you to take my side, you know!

You're letting the chavvy side down.

OP posts:
PacificDingbat · 23/12/2013 22:18

You don't need others to define you, surely, heartbroken?
You don't sound like you do

'Chav' is a lazy shortcut for 'not as refined as me and I am the measure of all good taste', so it really just makes the user look stoopid imo.
Unless it's used in a post-modern, ironic, cool way... Xmas Grin

Lama As far as I know that definition of chav was made up after the word gained popularity, so isn't the origin of it

PacificDingbat · 23/12/2013 22:19

"Kliff' just looks a bit wrong IMO, not chavvy btw.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/12/2013 22:20

I would rather be called a chav than a snob.

Sparklingbrook · 23/12/2013 22:20

This sums up chavvy for me. Grin

Heartbrokenmum73 · 23/12/2013 22:20

I really don't need anyone else to define me, no.

I'm just pissed off at people being so snotty about things. I think the card thread was the final straw for me.

Hulk smash!

Sparkling - whenever I see Daniella Westbrook I automatically think of Brian Harvey running himself over with his own car.

I giggle every time Grin

sometimes it is best to leave them to it , in Scotland we have chavs and neds so you can take your pick who you slag off Grin

plannedshock · 23/12/2013 22:23

Oh I think it's nice to receive relative cards, the fact that someone has gone to look for something specifically for you, but I have tattoos, but I also shop at waitrose, and bf my dd, I guess I'm a closet chav, or a chav with ambition! Rather a chav than a judgmental classless knobhead.

PeriodFeatures · 23/12/2013 22:23

I really find the term Chav offensive and discriminatory.

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 23/12/2013 22:23

Ah fuck them all.

Don't let people get to you. Least you don't have to deal with them in RL.

I think most people will say "oh family cards etc are chavvy" online while they write their Aunty cards. Most of it is just to look "cool" Grin

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 23/12/2013 22:23

I think people who use the phrase chavvy are very chavvy

Sparklingbrook · 23/12/2013 22:23

It was the giant spuds Heart With tuna and cheese.

PacificDingbat · 23/12/2013 22:24

No, I didn't think you did Xmas Smile

Yes, some threads are best left to it.
I back out slowly quite often, hoping not to disturb the wild animals posters...

mrsjay · 23/12/2013 22:24

I actually only remembered to buy my relative cards today Blush if only i had read it was chavvy first would have saved me a few quid
