AIBU?

To think I must be a chav, as MN has deemed me so?

According to threads I've been reading lately, most things I do seem to be marking me (and my family) out as chavs.

I fed my children formula and jarred food - this is chavvy
My Mum likes cards that say Nanny and she sends relative-specific cards - chavvy
My children like to wear character clothing - chavvy
I shop at Tesco and sometimes even Asda - chavvy

AIBU to be a bit tired of seeing the word 'chav' on here lately? I've challenged it and said that it's offensive, but just get the 'well, it's only online, why are you bothered', as if that makes it ok.

Yes, I realise I'm being over-sensitive, but me and my family aren't 'chavs' and I'm tired of it being bandied about (along with 'common') to describe things that people see as beneath them.

I don't like personalised cards.
There are apparently other Caitlins on here.
I've never, despite being an outrageous snob, called any one a chav.

Agree with Combine - the secret is to not give a shit.

I'm sorry this is getting to you, OP, but rise above it and be happy with who you are. People who call others chavvy are too concerned with status and probably a bit insecure.

Think lots of little boys do go through the thomas the tank engine stage (or other character).

The difference is the so-called chavvy mum will buy the £4 top from asda.
The mum who thinks she's not chavvy will buy a top with a train on it from Joules/boden for £20 and then convince the child it's better.
The truly rich who don't have owt to prove and don't give a shit will buy it from the charity shop after the asda mum as used it for 50p and wear it til it's got holes in it Grin

I am, of course saying that in jest (dislike reverse snobbery as much as actual snobbery) but it is all a bit like the emperors new clothes to me what dictates 'cool', 'chav' etc. It's only if you give a shit that any of it counts and personally I don't.

I didn't think people used the word chavvy anymore in polite society.
It's a bit sneery and outdated. ;)

(I did once comment on a baby name thread about the use of the word chavvy and got shot down but I do hate snobbery).

Huh. Numbers in user names are chavvy? How bizarre! How random! I'm struggling to make myself care. Does that make me more chavvy or less chavvy? Grin

The rules are all very confusing aren't they?

For fear of inadvertently committing social suicide I'm following these guidelines:

No rings are safer than either sovereigns or signets.

No names beginning with K or unique spellings. [If I have a son and want to name him Kai, is it better or worse to spell it with a Q?]

You can 'run into' Waitrose for 'a couple of essentials', but the really posh people shop in Lidl. [I'm fucked as we don't have a Waitrose, does this mean that I'm now really posh?]

Well, DS4 is 3.8 and he still wearing 18-24month sized Thomas t-shirt - the sleeves go to his elbows, there is screaming every time it has to go in the wash and I have to peel it off him using bribery and coercion.

And I am well posh. Or not. I don't know.

I am not British - so what do I know about 'class'? It just bamboozles me Xmas Confused

I thought all little boys had to go through a stage of being obsessed with Thomas the Tank engine, regardless of class. That and dinosaurs. Isn't that the law?

Also, Thomas the Tank engine books are very much of a forelock-tugging world where everyone knows their place, you'd think the Hyacinths would love that.

Oh no, they are chivvy AND chavvy - damn you autocorrect

Ok, the repeated mention of Thomas the Tankengine t-shirts is now getting to me - I did not even know that they were chivvy!!
Why oh why has nobody told me?

Merry Christmas, MNers Xmas Smile

Breathing is chavvy on mumsnet. This place is full of Hyacinth Buckets.

Best to ignore people who won't buy their kid a Thomas the Tank engine shirt because they are scared of what the neighbours will think. They are ridiculous. I can't be bothered to get offended by their brain farts. My son has Thomas the tank engine stuff ... judge away!
